Rethorical Devices

• “ The great anxiety, I feel for my Country, for you and for our family renders the day tedious, and the night unpleasant. “(Abigail 676)

• This quote is appeal to emotion because Abigail is expressing her feelings or

emotions for what is recently happening during his time with the suspense or anxiety if there will be war or not. Appeal to emotion is important to the passage because it helps Abigail show her emotions of how she feels and making John know.

Rethorical Devices• “Did ever any Kingdom or State regain their Liberty, when it was invaded without Blood shed?” (Abigail 676)• This quote is a rhetorical question because Abigail asks a question to John that we already know the answer and that is making John think and reason about how really there has not been a state or kingdom that has

regain liberty without fighting or after a thousands of deaths and blood shed. Rhetorical question is important to the passage because it helps John to ask himself the question Abigail is making and answering it.

Rethorical Devices

• “ I have taken a very great fondness for reading Rollin’s ancient History since you left me.” (Abigail 676)

• This quote is a red hearing because it distracts the attention of John while he is reading the letter of the main issue that is how lonely Abigail feels without John and if she would ever see him again. Abigail tries to forget about all this pain by reading history books and learning more. Red hearing is important for this passage because it helps Abigail forget about the main issue that is her loneliness and distract herself by doing other activities.

Rethorical Devices

• “I am determined to go thro with it if possible in these my days of solitude.” (Abigail 676)

• This quote is a restatement because throughout the whole letter Abigail wrote to John she constantly repeats the same idea or feeling that she has about her being lonely and feeling sad because of her solitude in many different ways to express her main feeling. Restatement is important for this passage because it helps John understand the main issue of the letter and how lonely Abigail feels since he left.

Unknown Vocabulary• Bosom of futurity: This means that

something is uncertain, and that it will only be known in the future.

• Importance: It is uncertain what course John Adams is going to take, so Abigail says, “What course you can or will take is all wrapt in the Bosom of futurity.

• Scope: The extent of the area or subject matter that something deals with or to which it is relevant.• Importance: This bosom of futurity, this

uncertainty and expectation leave the mind a great scope, there is a lot that can happen and you can think of if there is uncertainty, and you won’t know what to expect.

Vocabulary• “Yet we are told that all the

Misfortunes of Sparta were occasioned by their too great Solicitude for present tranquility...”

• Misfortunes of Sparta: When Philip of Macedon invaded Greece, the citizens of Sparta were concerned only with protecting their own territory, and because of that the country fell.

• Solicitude means the concern.• Importance: helps explain the point

in the second paragraph that there needs to be peace but long lasting, and obtained at the price of liberty.

Hello Guys! Today we are here in the studio going to the past. I have this wonderful lady Sarah which she came up to me with this interesting topic about The Letters of John and Abigail Adams . I have interesting questions for her to answer so that we can get the point of this letters which I know that

many of you don’t have a clue about them.Hey Larry King first of all I want you to know more about the topic. The topic is about The Letters of john

and Abigail Adams. I am a teacher from the American School I’ve been teaching to my students of tenth grade and I thought this topic would be interesting for everyone, not only my students.

Sarah the first question I think everyone has on their mind is what is the letter about? Can you explain it to us, so that we can get the point of view of this topic.

Well Larry the letter is about this couple that they have been distanced so like in those times there was no internet they used mail they wrote letters to each other. Abigail wrote to john asking about what

was happening to him to keep her inform and that she missed him because she was depressed and lonely without him so she wrote to him. They wrote to each other back and forth to communicate.

Wow interesting! I am afraid you didn’t mention where was John at and why was he there? Who did he work for?

Oh Larry I’m afraid I didn’t, John was in Philadelphia which was near Massachusetts which Massachusetts was in a state of near rebellion. John was there because he was chosen as one of

five delegates from Massachusetts to the continental Congress to be held in Philadelphia.Sarah as I read the letter I was interested in a certain thing in that letter there’s like a hidden question

that I could find out which one it was can you tell us and explain a little bit pleaseI knew that was coming up good eye Larry! Well in the letter the hidden question that there is, that if in

the future to have freedom do they needed to have war or blood? Abigail asks this question to john because she is scared of having war because nobody would like war and lots of people death.

ScriptI knew I was on the right track but I wasn’t sure hahahaha. Another think I noticed in the

letter is that Abigail is saying something about the Spartans I didn’t understand that part because I didn’t find it connected with the topic but I’m sure you somehow have

the right answer.Well of course I can help you on that misunderstanding. Abigail is talking about the

Spartans because she is trying to compare what it would be if they had war. She is comparing like if they have war that they could finish like Spartans with lots of loss

and blood because the last thing Abigail wasn’t its blood or war, so she compares it to war but not only war but also how the Spartans did everything to protect their territory

as saying their freedom. Thank you for correcting me I knew I was wrong. I only have one more to go. Abigail

wishes something to John what was it? You welcome, well as you can see Abigail wants the best to john but what she wishes to

him is success and that the decision that he takes she will support him. Sarah thank you for being here with us in Larry King show to teach us about the Letters

of john and Abigail Adams its been a pleasure to have you here tonight. You Welcome Larry I appreciate the interest that you and your people watching this have

put to this topic. I really appreciate it.Well this was Sarah in Larry king. Don’t miss next Monday the story about Mary

Rowlandson. BYE!
