PIANO AU BORD D'UNE SOURCE

EARLY: 1916 – 1979

MUSIC BACKGROUND: In the summer of 1835 Franz Liszt went on a voyage around Switzerland with the Countess Marie d'Agoult. On June 27 they came across the Furka Pass and saw the Rhone Glacier. Descending into the valley they were able to visit the Source of the Rhone River at the snout of the glacier where since, around 1830, a natural glacier cave was visible. They spent the night there at Gletsch and went down the valley the next day.

At that time the front of the glacier was a few hundred meters northeast of a chapel which stands today near the Hotel Glacier du Rhône at Gletsch. Stone markers beside the trail on the right bank indicate the limit of the glacier front in 1818, next to the present footbridge, and in 1856, some 100 meters further northeast. The glacier advanced and retreated during this period but in 1835 it was somewhere between these two markers. Liszt finished this piece along with the other piano pieces of the first part of Album d'un Voyageur while staying with the Countess at Bellagio in Italy between September and November 1837. Then in winter of 1840 he premiered all seven pieces and when this one was published with the other six works (Richault, Paris) he dedicated it to the French writer, Jean Ferdinand Denis (1798-1890).

“Au bord d'une source (Beside a Spring) is a virtuoso piano showpiece; it is the 4th piece of the first suite of Années de Pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage). There are three separate versions of Au bord d'une source. The first version appears in Liszt's set Album d'une voyageur (1834–1838), and the second in the first suite of Liszt's Années de pèlerinage (1836–1855). The last version is almost identical to the second, except for the final nine bars, which were added by

Liszt as a coda for his Italian piano student Giovanni Sgambati, who was also a composer; this lengthened the piece by about 30 seconds. The coda was written in 1863.” (Anon. 2016)

The piece is performed here by some of the finest pianist of the twentieth century. Undoubtedly, further research will turn up more early recordings of this work. Eugen d’Albert, a Scottish-born German pianist and composer, felt a kinship with German culture and music, so he emigrated to Germany, where he studied with Franz Liszt and began a career as a concert pianist. Liszt called him "the second Tausig" (a Polish virtuoso pianist).
