Tuesday 12 8 pm Tuesday Night with Stratton Rawson. Nielsen: “Maskarade.” Ludwig Holberg’s comedy “Mascaraden” was one of the most successful plays of the 19th Century. It spawned a vast amount of music, mostly in the form of incidental music. But it did also inspire one masterful opera by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen, who admired both “Die Meistersinger” and “Falstaff.” Despite the fact that “Maskarade” is a great comedic opera it is virtually unknown outside of Denmark. Here is the latest recording with Dane Michael Schønwandt leading the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Choir. The mostly Danish cast is headlined by Stephen Milling who sings the role of Jeronimus, a comic creation worthy of being compared to Falstaff.
