IP Parica Tops Bollman for 2nd W i n of Season

^

Dave Bollman played great pool throughout The

Classic Cup V but it wasn't enough as Jose Parica

snapped off his second major tournament in a row.

Bollman averaged an exceptional .882 for the

entire tournament, well within tournament winning

range. Parica also posted a high tournament

average of .867 with each player shooting three

,900's each.

The event was co-sponsored by Pool & Billiard

Magazine and Willards Scuffers. Harold Simonsen directed the eighty-five player tourney and paid

thirty-two places while Joba Trading supplied the

Granito cloth for the eight Gold Crowns.

Buddy Hall posted the highest tournament average

of .893 which included four .900fs. There were a

total of forty ,900!s, three shutouts, and

seventeen wire matches.

Notable Matches The Classic Cup V produced twenty matches worthy

of mention. The number in parentheses is the

player's TPA for that session.

David Howard (.971) pulverized his first opponent

11-1 while posting the highest TPA of the

tournament for a single match. His ill-fated

victim was John Abruzzo (.636).

After a missed shot by Bob Vanover (.743) at 3-2,

Jose Parica (.902) increased his lead to 8-2

allowing Vanover only to rack the balls! Final

score: 11-4.

In addition to Scott Kitto's (.925) excellent

overall play and resounding victory over Ronnie

Allen (.680) 11-1, Kitto made a ball on the break

without scratching every time he broke.

Bob Hilliana (.804) scratched on the break four

times during this session, the last time being the

most critical. While on the hill at 10-9, Williams

made the nine ball on the break and scratched! He

compete in the $50,000 added "Last Call for 9-Ball - Part II." The event drew 128 players, the largest field ever to use nine foot tables!

The four day event featured continuous play from noon til 3AM. When the large field finally dwindled down to just two players, the stage was set for an exciting match between Jim Rempe and Efren Reyes. The winner would be decided with one final match and considering that second place paid $13,000, Rempe and Reyes were playing one session of nine ball for $22,000! Two hours later it was all over. Jim Rempe reigned supreme as he defeated Reyes 11-4 to win the $35,000 grand prize. He played better and better as the tournament progressed and played his best on the final day.

The $114,000 purse was shared by sixty-four places with last place money receiving $330.

Bill Staton directed the event with co-directors Jay Helfert and Pat Fleming. Assistant director was Ken Smith.

Another event is planned for December.

r? Notable Matches

(continued from page 3)

never returned to the table as Larry

(•918) edged him 11-10.

Hubbart

Vi

Mike Bandy (.857) was never behind during the

entire set until soon after he broke while ahead

10-8. Unfortunately for Bandy, nothing fell on the

break. Chris MacDonald (.840) ran the next

twenty-seven balls to win 11-10.

After eleven racks, Ton Karabot8oa (.824) was

shooting an impressive .900 TPA and leading Steve

Mizerak (.935) 11-4- Yet, after a Karabotsos

safety, Mizerak kicked in a ball and proceeded to

play .982 pool for the next seven racks and won

11-7.

"Dirty" Danny Jones' (.851) brand of billiard

etiquette was a bit too much for Grady Mathews

(.837) as exchanged words and charges of

"sharking" eventually resulted in Mathews

conceding the match to Jones. Jones was ahead

10-8.

Allen Hopkins (.941) missed but a single ball as

he defeated Dallas West (.600) 11-1.

John Ploailla (.470) had the uncanny knack for the

unusual...break, that is. After winning the lag,

he broke the nine ball in twice in a row. During a

latsr break shot, he miscued, repositioned the cue

ball and miscued again. John Galloway (.683)

defeated Plosilla 11-5.

Sorry, no names on this notable match, but

reprogramming was required to fit this record

breaking session into the computer. By the time

the session was finally over, both players had

stepped up to the table over sixty times apiece!

Nick Varner (.883) never missed a ball during his

11-5 victory over Todd Anderaon (.731)*

Guido Orlandi (.808) jumped to a 7-0 lead over

John Zaksua (.787) yet couldn't hold on despite

the largest assortment of cues on the floor

(excluding vendors). Zaksus fought back to an 11-9

victory. Incidentally, with the help of his break

cue, Orlandi made a ball on the break without

scratching each of the ten times he broke.

After eleven racks and on the hill 10-1, Ronnie

Allen (.940) had maintained a record breaking .987

TPA. After a Ki« Davenport (.857) rally, Allen

eventually won 11-6.

In a most impressive match against Steve Mizerak

(.744), Louie Roberts (.943) displayed exceptional

talent as he disposed of the "Mighty Miz" 11-2.

During hia 11-5 victory over Gary Hutchinga

Notable Matches (continued from page 17)

(.803), Nick Varner (.875) made a ball on break without scratching every time he broke.

the

While thrashing Mark Jarvis (.467) 11-0, David Howard (.963) almost beat the tournament high .971 TPA set by himself earlier. After nine racks, he was still shooting 1.000.

After winning the lag, Nick Varner (.889) broke and ran out four racks and obviously looked in control. Soon he was ahead of Buddy Hall (.906) 6-1. Hall won the next ten racks while holding Varner to pocketing just two more balls!

While knotted at 10-10 with David Howard (.900), Larry Schwartz (.874) made the nine ball on the break.

With the score 10-10, Steve Mizerak (.873) appeared to be running out a routine rack, yet fell short on position and played safety on the nine ball. Danny Jones (.868) stepped to the table with the cue ball on the head rail and the nine ball on the foot rail. He cut the nine ball as thin as is humanly possible for a spectacular session winning shot.

After an Allen Hopkins (.851) break shot and trailing 8-9, Jose Parica (.865) ran out, then broke and ran out the next two racks to win 11-9.
