    WHATARECL ASSICCHILDREnSSOnGS?Manyofthesongshadaknownbeginning,butgraduallyovertimebecamepartofagreatsharedbodyofchildrenssongsandgames.Manyofthemareimprovisationalinnatureandcanbechangedbyinsertingateachersnameorafriendsinagamethechildrencantakeoldrhymesandgivethemnewshape.Reflectingthishistoricaldepthandappropriationbychildren,thesongsincludedherecanbefoundwidelytoday.Thoughtofasoldandanonymous,theyhavebeentaughtinschoolsandsummercamps.Theyaresongsadultsrememberfromtheirchildhoodandcansharewiththeirchildren.

    Inthe20thcentury,Americanfolkloristscollectedthesesongs,firstprimarilyinterestedinthelyricsaspoetry.Then,withrecordingdevices,theybegantofollowthemelodies.Thesongsaregreatexamplesofthefolkprocess,inwhichamelodymaybereinventedoverandoverwithnewthemesandwordstoaddresscurrentsituations.AnoldBritishballadbecomesStreetsofLaredowiththecowboysandSt.JamesInfirmarywiththejazzmusiciansinnewOrleans.Folkloristshavefoundthechildrensfolksongrepertoiretobebothdynamicandenduring,withmanyclassicspassedonthrough,andtransformedby,manygenerations.Theywouldknow,sincemanyofthemhaveplayedakeyroleinspreadingthesongspopularityintheUnitedStatesthroughpublicationsandeducationalinstitutions.PioneeringfolksongcollectorJohnLomaxSr.publishedanimportantcollection,CowboySongs,in1910.CarlSandburgs1927AmericanSongbagwasanothermilestone.RobertWinslowGordoncollectedsongsinthe1920s,leadingtotheformationoftheLibraryofCongressArchiveofFolkSongin1928.

    SongsJohnandAlanLomax,BenjaminBotkin,andothersprovidedfolksongcollectionsthatpeopleyoungandoldcouldlearntheoldsongsfrom.Fromthe1940sonward,childrenwouldlearnmanyoftheseclassicfolksongsinschoolfromschoolmusicbooks,suchascollectionsbyBeatriceLandeckandElieSeigmeister.Someofthewell-knownbooks,suchasAnimalFolkSongsforChildren,wereeditedbycomposerandfolksongdocumentarianRuthCrawfordSeeger.Thesongswereaboveallfun.Theywereaboutanimals,cowboys,legendaryAmericancharacters,andseafarers,andtiedintothestoriesofAmericanhistorytaughtinschoolaboutfiguressuchasDavyCrockettandDanielBoone.Theycouldbefoundinsummercampsongbooksforallthosechildrenwhoventuredofftotheirsummeradventure.Somefolksingersinthe1950s,epitomizedbyPeteSeeger,oftensangatcamps,teachinganewgenerationsongstheycarriedwiththemintotheiradulthoodandsubsequentlytaughttotheirownkids.

    ThiscollectiondrawsfromtheFolkwaysRecordsandSmithsonianFolkwaysRecordingslabels.TheformerwastheworkofMosesAsch,whospentagooddealoftimegoingtoteachersconventionsandtryingtogethischildrensrecordsintoschools.Whenheencounteredanthropologistsheadingofftoanexoticlocaletorecord,heencouragedthemtobringhimbacksomechildrenssongs.Ofthe2,200titlesonhislabel,hisbest-sellingalbumswerechildrensalbumsnonemorethanthosebyayoungwomanfromChicago,EllaJenkins,whoovertimewasdubbedTheFirstLadyofChildrensMusicforherprimacyinthisfield.AschpromotedchildrensalbumsbyWoodyGuthrie,PeteSeeger,SuniPaz,SamHinton,CharityBailey,andothers.Foundedin1988andfollowingthelegacyofAsch,SmithsonianFolkwaysRecordingscontinuestovaluechildrensmusic.newerrecordingsbyElizabethMitchell,SarahLeeGuthrieandFamily,andChipTaylorandhisgrandchildren,aswellasnewreissuesofolderrecordingsbyrenownedfolksingerTomGlazer,haveexpandedtheholdingsofchildrensmusic.Thesesongsareforsingingtogether,maybeinacar,maybeataparty,maybejustathomeforfun,andtothisend,thelyricsareincludedhere.InthespiritoflegendarysingerPeteSeeger,whodedicatedhislifetokeepingpeopleinteractingtogetherandtobondingtogetherthroughsong,weinviteyoutodothesame.Takeoutthisrecording,gatherthechildren,andtrysingingthesongstogether.Enjoy.
