Welcome!Classes at Fairchild | January through June 2018

The cooler winter months are here in sunny South Florida, and now is the perfect time to enjoy a class at the Garden. We think that you’ll agree that the Classes at Fairchild offer something for just about everyone.

Our loyal and knowledgeable instructors will guide students in a variety of subjects from painting or drawing a masterpiece in almost any medium, to growing orchids, crotons, mangos, grafting fruit trees or designing your landscape with hardscape attributes. Come to the Garden morning, noon or night to learn how to use your DSLR or iPhone cameras and take stunning photos of the sunrise, sunset, super moon, flowers, bugs, birds or the glorious landscapes of Fairchild. Grab your kitchen apron and learn how to make delicious breads, pakoras and samosas from India, low-fat/carb gourmet meals, New England seafood bake or create from the harvest of fresh Florida fruits, vegetables and seafood.

Thank you for your continued support in attending the Classes at Fairchild. We look forward to seeing you at the Garden soon. To register, please visit www.fairchildgarden.org/education/adults

FROM FAIRCHILD’S ORCHID LAB TO YOUR GARDENDr. Jason DowningOrchid seeds are unlike any other plant’s seeds. Called “dust seeds,” they are so tiny that they lack the nutrient content to start the germination process. In the wild, orchid seeds must prey on fungi to obtain this food, an exceedingly rare event. However, under laboratory conditions, we can provide the seeds with nutrients via plant culture media and achieve nearly 100% germination. Students will be able to work in Fairchild’s Orchid Micropropagation Lab and will learn the sterile laboratory technique’s necessary to cultivate orchids. Each student will also be able to take home a flasked native orchid.
