Upholstery for Beginners£100; £150; £125Tutor: Jacqueline DonachieA class for those who are new to upholstery.Jacqueline will guide you through the differenttechniques and equipment needed to complete asmaller project. Bring an item of furniture to work on!If you have tools, bring them. If not, you will be givenadvice about what you might need for the termand a limited number can be borrowed from the Centre.Contact [email protected] if you’d like advice on a suitable project or whereto source a project from.

Pottery £80; £120; £100Tutor: Pat PetersPat is a very experienced and highly qualified potter. She has taught for many years atWaid Academy and also here at Forgan Arts Centre. The Centre has a number of wheelsand a kiln. Students can work with clay either with or without using the wheel. Glazing andfinishing the pottery is all covered in the class. Clay incurs a small additional charge foreach student.

Pottery for Children £35Tutor: Pat Peters I Suitable for children aged 9 – 13

Pat is a very experienced and highly qualified potter. She has taught for many years atWaid Academy and also here at Forgan Arts Centre.

Upholstery £120; £180; £150Tutor: Elsie HutcheonElsie is a Member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen and has many years of experience.Along with her husband, she has an established upholstery business and she has taughtat the Centre for over 20 years. These classes are suitable for various levels of ability andstudents work on their own piece of furniture while receiving individual instruction from thetutor. Some materials can be bought at the class as required.

Painting £80; £120; £100Tutor: John JohnstoneJohn Johnstone was born in Forfar in 1941. He studied at Duncan of Jordanstone Collegeof Art 1959-64, and was highly commended. He received a major travelling scholarship tovisit European Capitals and was a part time lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College ofArt for many years. He has exhibited several times in London and he is a professionalmember of the Society of Scottish Artists and Visual Arts Scotland.

Art for Beginners £80; £120; £100Tutor: Gillian RobertsonThe class will start by looking at sketchbooks, why peoplekeep them and different easy ways of using them in order torecord the world around and order thoughts, colours etc.Students to have a small sketchbook (A5 as a guide) for theduration of the course and draw in regularly so they can figureout what excites them visually and will be able to work on piecesduring the class from their own sketches if appropriate. Gillian willalso be looking at perspective, drawing in line with a pen (includingblind drawing), negative spaces, watercolours, and probably some basicprinting techniques during the term.

There is the opportunity to draw outwith the Centre at some point during the term.

Gillian has both a first class Degree with Honours and a Master of Design course inIllustration & Printmaking from Duncan of Jordanstone. She has been teaching atDundee College for the past 16 years.

Bring a sketchbook and pencil to the class. You will then be guided by Gillian aboutany other materials you might need.

Adult Art Classes 16+ £100; £150; £125Tutor: Delia BaillieSuitable for a range of experience including those wishing to supplement a portfolio.Students will be introduced to a breadth of themes relevant to contemporary art practice.You will have access to lectures and technical demonstrations, one-to-one tuition andthe opportunity to participate in informal group discussions. Delia Baillie is a lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and has astudio in Dundee. She has been a member of the Royal Scottish Academy since 2008.Recent projects include a 2-month artists residency at Halle 14 in Leipzig, Germany.

Creative Music-Making for Adults £40; £60; £50Tutors: Claire Gorman &Mark UrbanThis five-week course offers the opportunity to develop skills and confidence in the areasof group improvisation, composition and performance.

Creativity and ShamanismWorkshops‘Create your Life!’ (5 sessions £60*)Tutor: Carol DayAs an Artist who has tracked Creativity and the ‘Wonder of How itall Works’ all of my life, I have received a lot of my training fromworking with and observing the creative process with young childrenin a range of educational perspectives and also from watching the wheelof nature turn around. I have travelled the country and the world to train with differentShamanic Teachers, Counselling Tutors and Artists as well as being based in Fife to setup the little red drum school which I run from Falkland Estate. The work I do now ispredominantly with adults. The trainings which I run are called Creative Shamanism.My passion is helping people to rekindle their creativity and assisting them to find out howto free themselves to properly follow their inspiration and flow of ideas.

The run of classes ‘Create Your Life’ at Forgan Arts Centre this September/ October isdesigned to take you through a Creative Recovery Programme. I will be bringing in ideasabout how Creativity works from Shamanic, Quantum and Psychotherapeutic perspectives.We will explore visualisation and shamanic journeying as ways into our inner worlds and seewhat Creativity is for each of us individually and give our attention to what is wanting toexpress. The 5 weeks will have different practical foci: writing, drawing, constellating(speaking from a given role), creating a drumming circle and making a vision board. By thecompletion of the series, you will have set the course for your ideas to take shape in the world.

These workshops have a reputation for being great fun, friendly and supportive as well asbeing highly effective at getting things flowing and moving. So if you are feeling like you needshaking into life, have ideas you are looking to launch, or just need a bit of inspiration andsupport, please come along. Bring a yoga mat, blanket and cushion and a note pad andpen. If you have frame drums and rattles bring those along too. We have plenty to share.

Confused about what all the buttons on your camera do? Want totake better photographs? This series of practical workshops will

help you to get to know your camera better & show you how to useit creatively. Best suited to DSLR & bridge cameras. Bring your camera

(with fully charged batteries & a blank memory card), manual, tripod (if youhave one) & lots of enthusiasm!

Topics covered will include:Avoiding camera shake, composing the image, achieving good exposure, demystifyingthe histogram, ISO & white balance, creative use of aperture & shutter, focusingtechniques, using different lenses, using flash, from pixels to paper

Beginners Stitchery £80, £120, £100Tutor: Jill Skullina

Visual Artist and Fashion Designer, Jill Skulina will be teaching basic sewing skills aimedat building confidence in your sewing ability and demystifying your sewing machine.Through a number of short projects you will learn how to use your sewing machine;machine and hand sewing; hemming; seams; button holes; laying out patterns;cutting out and marking up.

Jill has a Masters in Fine Art and has been based in WASPS Artists Studios in Dundeesince 2008, as a visual artist. Jill has a menswear label called JACK (et) which launchedin 2013. She was a finalist for Women Ahead’s Most Promising New Business Award,in March 2014 and will be launching her new A/W14 collection in October.

Floral Art £80; £120; £100Tutor: Peggy ReidPeggy is a highly qualified teacher and demonstrator of Floral Art, who has demonstratedwidely across the country. Bring some flowers and imagination.

Ann has years of experience teaching crafts and will givesadvice and tuition to all in the class whether you choose towork in embroidery, crewel, tapestry, hardanger, or anyother type of stitching. Work on your own project or letAnn set you up with threads, patterns and more fromher extensive stock (for a small extra charge)!

Bridge for Beginners £80; £120; £100Tutors: Shiena Lang

Shiena is a Grand Master and teaches the ACOL system of Bridge.

Exercise your brain playing Bridge even if you are a complete beginner! Enjoy some friendlycompetition and a mental challenge. This is suitable for those wanting to play at home orgo on to play in a club.

Stained Glass £80; £120; £100Tutors: AnnMcFadyen

Suitable for all. Come and create your own stained glass masterpiece! Materials can bebought from the tutor. Bring your own design or compose your own. Ann had beenteaching this class at Forgan for 10 years and has vast experience.

Introduction to Photoshop ‘Elements’ £48; £72; £60 6 weeksTutor: DawnWhite

All you need to know to start using Elements effectively. Example images will be suppliedso if you have a laptop with a recent edition installed (Elements 11 or 12), bring it along tothe class. Topics covered will include:

Colour & tone adjustmentsRemoving unwanted items from an imageCropping, resizing & sharpeningUsing smart brush & other toolsUsing layers & layer masksRaw File ProcessingUsing Organiser

Felting £80; £120; £100Tutor: Karen Caddell-WalkerTo design and make a 40x40cm felt textile piece using wet felting,needle felting, beading and embroidery. This can then be developedinto a cushion cover, wall-hanging, a framed piece of art or something else.The choice is yours!

Week 1; Research and design development. Please bring photographs, magazineimages, colours and thoughts on what you would like to make. From here we will developa shopping list so an order can be placed for all of you to be ready to start the followingweek. During the following 9 weeks you will continue to work towards a finished productand within this time there will be mini workshops including wet felting for half felt and fullfelt, needle felting and basic embroidery.

All of these workshops will allow you to produce an item to include in your design oran individual piece.

All materials costs are to be met by the student. This should be no more than £15 – £20in total.

Working with the life model this class will introduce participantsto both traditional and more expressive approaches to lifedrawing. No experience required. There will be a smalladditional cost for the model.

Wonders of Watercolour £80; £120; £100Tutors: Liz Dulley

This class is suitable for all.

Specially designed for improving painting skills, gaining confidenceand finding out what you can really do with watercolours!

Liz offers tips, techniques and advice using all water based media,tailored to individual abilities.

Students will bring along their preferred source material and have the opportunity to selectand try the different techniques demonstrated weekly, while working on their own painting.

Students will have the opportunity to use inks, watercolour bars and watercolour pencils.

I'll talk about and show you a selection of brushes on the first day.

Liz enjoys working with watercolour, finding it an exciting and versatile medium. With adelicate approach, using unique spattering techniques, Liz creates intriguing watercolourpaintings succulent in texture, drawing inspiration from surrounding objects. Liz has beensuccessful to have work hung with The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolouron numerous occasions.

We are also offering new groups that will run more as social gatherings than classes. These will develop over time…

CRAFTS SEWING BEE: Thursday afternoons from 2.00 – 4.00pm. Meet with friends with a similar interest in sewing crafts –have a chat, a cup of tea and a biscuit or two and work on whatever project you are interested in. Learn from each other andenjoy the company.

BRIDGE GATHERING / CLUB: Depending upon the level of interest and preference, this could be held on either Monday,Thursday or Friday afternoon. Come along and play in a friendly, sociable, not too competitive group and enjoy a cup of teaand a chat as well.

BOOKGROUP: If there’s enough interest we will start one. Please contact [email protected] or phone the Centre.

KNITTING BEE: This will start later on in the autumn – keep in touch for details and let us now if you are interested.
