Introduction & Overview
. 3 million Registered Nurses in the United States
. Of the 3 million Registered Nurses in the United States, 171, 000 are Nurse Practitioners
. 251,113 Registered Nurses in Florida
. Of the 251,113 Registered Nurses in Florida, 17,508 are Nurse Practitioners (Source: http://www.flcenterfornursing.org)
Collier County
. 2,000 Registered Nurses in Collier County
. Of the 2,000 Registered Nurses,
approximately 150-200 are Nurse
Practitioners
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
There are Registered Nurses who are
educated and licensed as Advanced
Practice Nurses:
. Nurse Practitioners
. Clinical Nurse Specialists
. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists
. Certified Nurse Midwives
History of Nurse Practitioners
. The first official training for nurse
practitioners was created by Henry
Silver, a physician, and Loretta Ford,
a nurse in 1965
. This was in response to a shortage of
physicians
(Note of interest: Nurse anesthetists and nurse midwives
were established in the 1940s)
Benefits of Using a Nurse Practitioner
. 600 million visits made to NPs each year
in the United States
. High quality care that is cost effective
. Patients report high level of satisfaction
with the care they receive from NPs
. Care is patient centered = good outcomes
What Do Nurse Practitioners Provide?
. Diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infections and injuries
. Order, perform and interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays
. Prescribe medications and other treatments
. Focus on health promotion - disease prevention
. Provide health education and counseling
Barriers for Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners in Florida
. One barrier which has captured great
media attention as well as attention in
the Florida legislature is the fact that
Advanced Registered Nurse
Practitioners who work in Florida are not
able to prescribe controlled substances
Rules and Regulations
. Rules and Regulations which govern the practice of Nurse Practitioners are different in each of the states
. In Florida, Nurse Practitioners are referred to as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) by title
. In Pennsylvania, Nurse Practitioners are referred to as Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNP) by title
State of Florida – Regulation of ARNPs
. Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners in the State of Florida are licensed by the Department of Health – Division of Medical Quality Assurance and the Florida Board of Nursing

. Florida Gulf Coast University has a
Master of Science in Nursing Program
. Nova Southeastern University has a
Master of Science in Nursing Program
(location is on the East Coast of Florida)
. Other schools offer online NP Program

Affordable Care Act
. The Affordable Care Act supports the utilization of Nurse Practitioners
. A physician shortage is on the horizon most particularly in primary care
. Nurse Practitioners can be a very cost effective and viable option
. Nurse Practitioners are not physicians – nursing has its’ own unique discipline

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
. Clinically focused doctorate approved by the
American Association of Colleges of Nursing on
October 25, 2004
. The DNP prepares Advanced Practice Registered
Nurses to serve as Leaders, Educators, and
Clinicians
. DNP education focuses on information
technology, health policy, evidence-based
practice, innovation, and systems management
Doctor of Nursing Practice Programs (DNP)
. 217 DNP programs currently in the U.S. – 116 DNP programs have been nationally accredited by CCNE
. DNP programs are now available in 40 states plus the District of Columbia – Florida is one of the states with the most programs (more than 5)
. From 2011 to 2012, the number of students enrolled in DNP programs increased from 9,094 to 11,575
(Goal: to move the current level of preparation for advanced nursing practice from the master’s degree to the doctorate level by the year 2015)
