• “Scalawags”-white Republican southerners– Many were poor southerners– Some opposed succession– Small farmers

• Sharecropping– Work for part of the crop
• Tenant Farming– Rent the land

Effects on the South’s Economy
• Changes in the labor force– 1875: white laborers picked 40% of cotton
• Cash crops– Farming arrangements focused on cash crops– Food was imported
• Debt– Profits went to debts
• Merchants– Sold supplies to tenant farmers
Cities Expand
• Southern railroads rebuilt by 1872– 40% increase in new track as well
