Conceptual Understanding

Procedural Skill & Fluency

Application

Preparation for Standardized Tests

• Teach more than “how to get the answer”and instead support students’ ability to access concepts from a number of perspectives.

• Students are able to see math as more than a set of mnemonics or discrete procedures.

• Conceptual understanding supports the other aspects of rigor (fluency and application).

• The Standards require speed and accuracy

in calculation.

• Teachers structure class time and/or

homework time for students to practice

core functions so that they are more able to

understand and manipulate more complex

concepts.

Solve real-world problems with a degree of difficulty appropriate to the grade/course.

Apply knowledge and skills, extending to more complex problems, knowledge and skills articulated in previous grades/courses

Engage in modeling practice through:◦ making sense of problems & persevering to solve them

◦ reasoning abstractly and quantitatively

◦ using appropriate tools strategically

◦ looking for and making use of structure

◦ looking for and expressing regularity in repeated reasoning

In conjunction with NJ State law, the River Dell Board ofEd. has established a policy which requires eachstudent be present in class a minimum of 90% of thetime in order to receive credit for a course.

A student will lose credit in a course or courses if he or she reaches the following number of absences:

9 absences in a one semester course

18 absences in a full year course

All excused and unexcused absences are included in a student’s attendance record.

Students may appeal a loss of credit based on reason for the absences.

In the case of excessive absences, the assistant principal or designee will carefully review attendance records at the conclusion of each quarter of the school year and meet with those students who have accumulated excessive absences.

Parents of these students will be informed of absences on a bimonthly basis through an attendance letter.

Comprised of the principal, assistant principal, director of pupil personnel services, nurse and teacher.

Review cases of each student whose attendance violations appear to warrant the loss of credit for a course or courses.

Provide the student with an opportunity to appeal his or her loss of credit by presenting documentary evidence in support of the appeal.

A copy of the Attendance Policy can be found on the schools website.

www.riverdell.org

Students who choose to take advantage of the many extracurricular activities here at the high school are subject to a random drug and alcohol test as per the River Dell Board of Education Drug Testing Policy.

Co-curricular activity & school club participants

Students who previously violated district substance abuse policy

Students attending school related trips and the prom

Students w/ parking permits Participants in open lunch program Parents may volunteer child Students remain eligible from the date of

consent for the calendar year.

Participating student’s will be assigned a confidential ID number and placed in a testing pool

Selection of student’s will be computer generated and random

Those selected will be notified and accompanied by the assistant principal or designee to a secured testing site where a sample will be taken

The sample will be sent to an independent lab where the testing will take place.

Results of a positive test will be followed up by a Medical Review Officer

The MRO will contact the parent/guardian directly

The MRO decides the validity or accuracy of a positive result

MRO results are returned within 48 hrs.

Student is removed from participation in co-curricular activities, clubs, parking and open lunch program for a period of 2 weeks

Student is referred to the Student Assistance Counselor (SAC) for referral to an appropriate program

Student must be evaluated by a physician and submit a negative sample within this period

Any student submitting a 2nd confirmed positive result will be removed from competition for 3 months and/or lose activity privileges

SAC will refer student for an evaluation for a drug treatment program

Any student submitting a 3rd confirmed positive will be removed from all privileges for one yr. and evaluated for a drug program

All offenses are cumulative for 4 yrs.

All information, including results, are confidential and are NOT shared with the police

Suspicion policy is still in effect(any student can be sent to be tested if

suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol – State Law)
