Marie Bond:lived. That is to have succeeded.” And when things don’t go our way, we are reminded of Father Steve Popovich’s words from his homily during Ash Wednesday mass junior year: “Life is like a ride at Idora Park. You’ve just got to hold on and trust that God is there.”From fiestas and 2AM nights through eating candles and our outstanding Mooney rally, we’ve learned to live with laughter and gratitude, remembering to “Thank God it’s Friday,” every day of the week. As Mr. Nalepa would say, “We’re not dead yet.”And when all else fails, we’ve come to understand that we can depend on our faith. We must never forget Sister Regina’s final advice from our last senior meeting: “Stay close to God.” Anyone who walks through our halls understands that Ursuline embodies a special tradition. This weekend, we join a long line of Ursuline alumni who carry on that tradition by living out the lessons that were instilled in them during their four years at our school. As we become adults, we must hold tight to this Ursuline legacy--our legacy--living out the ideals we have been taught and carrying them close to our hearts. We will share these values through our actions every day:We will live not for ourselves, but for those who need us.We will act with class, treating each and every person we meet as if they are family. We will recognize and appreciate the littlest blessings, sharing our laughter and gratitude with those around us.We will accept challenges eagerly and fight for our goals with a passion. Finally, we will depend on our faith in Jesus Christ, trusting that everything happens for a reason.

As we leave home and face new challenges, we know the road ahead will not always be an easy one. But I am confident that if we hold tight to our Ursuline legacy, wherever we go, whatever we do, we will succeed. And so, as we begin the next chapter of our stories, let us live by the lessons we have learned at Ursuline, perfectly captured by the words of Mother Theresa that hang in our hallway:People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

As I conclude, I would like to take a moment to recognize some important people. For many of us, these basic lessons began far before fresh-man year. They started at home, with our families. I would like to thank my mom and dad, my two grandparents, and my big brother who are here tonight. To you and to all of our families, we know we don’t always recognize the sacrifices you make for us and our futures, but we hope that we are making you proud with the people we are becoming. The spring before our freshman year, Mrs. Fleming told our parents that Ursuline would give us the roots to keep us grounded and the wings to make us fly. Well, she was right. Ursuline has not only prepared us for success in our careers, but has instilled in us invaluable lessons that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.Congratulations, Class of 2017. Let’s celebrate. Tonight, we will celebrate the people we are becoming: our titles earned, friendships formed, memories made, and lessons learned. We’ve made it this far and I know we’re ready for more. Soli Deo Gloria and Go Irish!

PJ Conway:you, those who have shaped you as a person, your family, no matter how extended it may be. From the first day of high school, you don’t know how your class will shape up to be. You don’t know if there will be cliques or fights like the teen dramas which run constantly on TV. But through these four short years I’ve come to see a close-knit class that cannot be torn apart. We’ve developed into a family during all the time we spent in class, at school mass, and cheering on our friends as they beat Mooney once again in whatever competition happened to be that day. One time in particular that the great relationship of our class was shown was during Mooney week. Now I know rivalry week is a cliche class moment, but the rally demonstrated not only our great combined ability to procrastinate, a skill all high schoolers possess, but it also showed just how well we could work together. I say this because, as many members of the staff and my classmates can attest, the rally was mostly put together in a day. So many times have I heard our Mooney rally was the best in years, and yet the class of 2017 put it together the day before it was performed. Three and a half years after we started our journey, and we still grew closer than ever before. This bond will never be broken between us, but also can never be taken away from the U. We have made our mark on the school. Even though we will no longer be enrolled, our legacy will live on through the influences we have made on underclassmen, teachers, and the history of such an extraordinary school. Ursuline history has always been built on diverse classes just like ours. Classes who, despite their differences, came together as families of faith to influence Ursuline and their communities in positive ways. This is what I know our futures to hold; to be positive influences on the world. Ursuline has prepared us to make a difference in the world, and we will use this preparation in the rest of our lives. These successes are not only based in the lessons taught by teachers, but from the support of each other, for each other, the family around us. I thank God every day for allowing me to be a part of such a great class and I know that this opportunity to be a part of the Ursuline family will always be one of my fondest memories. Thank you all again for coming and for your support of every one of us through these great years at Ursuline High School. Thank you to every single one of you members of the class of 2017, you’ve all made an impact, on an irreplaceable period of my life which I will never forget. It truly has been a blessing and an honor to be a part of the family of 2017. Finally, I’d like to close this reflection with an exclamation that means so much to every member of the Ursuline family, which is frankly something I’ve always wanted to say, God bless the Irish!

Congratulations Sister Regina Rogers, O.S.U.!

Sister Regina Rogers, O.S.U. began teaching at Ursuline High School in 1973 in the Religious Education Department. In 1982 she became Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction, a postition she held until her retirement in June 2017. Sister Regina earned her B.S. in Education from Youngstown State University, a M.S. in Religious Studies from Catholic University of America, and a M.S. in Administration from the University of Notre Dame. Prior to teaching at Ursuline, Sister spent two years at Saint Patrick School in Youngstown. In 2002, Sister Regina Rogers became the General Superior of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and left her position in the Ursuline High School Administration. Upon the conclusion of her term as General Superior in 2009, Sister Regina returned to Ursuline High Pictured with Father Dan Venglarik School as the Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction. Sister Regina in the fall of 1973. says that the best part of the Ursuline tradition is, “To see the children of my former students walking the halls. Another is our times of prayer - when we pray together. And the close connections and support that Ursuline grads have for one another.” Sister also remarked that, “God has blessed me so abundantly by sending into my life such wonderful colleagues, students, and parents. I can never repay the kindness and support that the Ursuline communityhas shown me. Ursuline will always be in my heart andin my prayers.” Although leaving the office, Ursuline is blessed to keep Sister Regina as a member of the Religious Education Department and will be teaching two periods of senior religion each day. Ursuline High School is truly a better place because of Sister Regina Rogers and owes her a debt of sincere gratitude. We wish her good luck and many happy and healthy days!
