Class of 2016 Hall of Fame Remarks

Teddy Hart

Teddy Hart was a member of the football and basketball teams during his time at Park View

High School. Considered an incredibly talented athlete, Teddy could have participated and

excelled at any sport, however, his love of basketball would be his devotion.

Teddy was a member of the Freshman Basketball team for one year, where he was the team

captain, and a member of the Varsity basketball team for 3 years. Over his career at Park View,

Teddy would rack up a myriad of honors.

Individually, Teddy was named to the All District team as a junior and senior. He was

nominated, twice, to the Loudoun Times Mirror All-Tournament team, and once served as the

tournament’s MVP. Over the span of his 4 year career, Teddy was also named twice as the

Loudoun Times Mirror Athlete of the Week.

During his senior year, Teddy served as team captain for the Boys Basketball team, and was

name the team’s MVP, and the Park View High School Outstanding Male Athlete. Further

recognitions include receiving the Marine Corp Distinguished Athlete Award, and the Liberty

District Slam Dunk Champion.

Furthermore, it was Teddy’s talent, hard work and leadership would help lead the 1996 Boys

basketball team to a District title.

After his successful career in high school, Teddy attended High Point University in High Point,

North Carolina. As a freshman, he tried out for the men’s basketball team as a walk on, and

played all 4 years. Teddy is currently a youth leader and mentor at First City Church in

Pensacola, Florida. He also volunteers his time as a basketball coach for 7th and 8th grade boys.

His pastor, Rick Hazelip, writes of Teddy in his recommendation letter: “Teddy Hart and his

family have been members of our church for several years. As his pastor, I have watched him

grow into one of the finest spiritual leaders we have. He walks both humbly and with

intention. He is a gentleman…yet speaks with power, purpose and strength.”

We are proud of his accomplishments both on and off the field and are proud to have him as a

member of our Hall of Fame.

John Jackson

John Jackson was another 2 sport athlete that contributed his talents to the Park View football

and track teams.

As a 4 year letter winner in track, John helped lead the Patriots to the District Championship

for 3 of his 4 years at PVHS. John competed in the long jump, the 100m, 200m and 400m

races, and was a member of the 4x100 relay team.

Individually, he placed multiple times in the VHSL Regional Championship Meet, and

participated in the State meet all 4 years, where he placed third in the long jump.

Currently, several of John’s performances still rank in the top ten performances of all time

here at Park View. His jump of 22’6 ½” is still 3rd all time, and his 100m dash of 10.8 seconds

and his 400m 51.9 second time are among the 10 ten best performances at Park View.

Dave Hembach, former PVHS track coach says of this inductee: “…based on accomplishments

of John Jackson over his 4 years, he has proven to be one of the most successful track athletes

at Park View. Although it has be over 20 years since he left Park View, John ranks 3rd in all time

long jumper performances in school history.”

John was also a member of Park View’s football team, where he played wide receiver, running

back and defensive back.

As a Patriot, John was twice named to the All District team and Honorable Mention All-Region

in 1992. He was a member of the 89 District Championship and Regional Runner-Up team.

Currently, John’s record of 178 receiving yards in a game stands as the most in school history.

After graduating from Park View, John began working for Washington Gas, the same company

he still works for today. He also played defensive back and safety for the North American

Football League’s Virginia Rage.

John has continued his love of sports by coaching young athletes throughout Loudoun County.

Currently, he is the JV Football coach at Loudoun County High School.

Whitney Mansfield Madine

Whitney was an excellent athlete during her years here at Park View having participated in,

and lettering in Gymnastics, Tennis and Cheerleading.

Whitney, also known, as “Crissy,” lettered 10 times in her four years at Park View.

In the fall, Whitney was a member of the Patriot Cheerleading squad. She lettered two years

and was named the squad’s MVP. Whitney also was named an All American Cheerleader

Finalist.

Arguably, Whitney’s best sport was Gymnastics. A member and letter winner for all four

years, Whitney’s gymnastics coach, Michelle Ritenour Maged says: “Whitney always came to

practice smiling and eager to work hard to improve her routines. She was a perfectionist,

energetic and a great team leader who lead by example. Any coach would have been proud to

have a whole team of Whitney’s on their squad.” Former coach, Kathleen Dugger agrees in

her comments: “Whitney is the type of person who does not hesitate to accept a challenge

and is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. She has consistently worked to

develop her skill and add harder, more dangerous stunts.” And the hard work paid off.

Whitney helped the Gymnastics program earn District championship honors in 1988, ‘89 and

‘90; Regional Championship honors in 1988 and ‘89; and State Championships in 1988, ‘89 and

‘90. Individually, she would win District honors on the beam, and a 3rd place at States on the

Vault. In 1991, she was the regional champion on the vault and the State Champion on the

Bars.

In addition to her contributions to the Gymnastics program, Whitney lettered for 4 years in

Tennis and was the individual District Runner Up in 1990.

After high school, Whitney attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she

received her Bachelors of Science in Public Health. Whitney would go on to get her Master’s

degree in Nutrition at UNC-Greensboro.

Whitney currently lives in Texas with her husband and 3 children. Whitney continues to be

involved in sports by competing in tennis leagues and charity races.

Steve Moran

During his time at Park View, Steve can say that he was a member of 6 District Championship

teams, 3 Regional Championship teams, and 1 State Championship team.

As a member of the Patriot Basketball team, Steve lettered 3 years, and was named the MVP

of the Tip-Off Tournament. His contributions helped lead the team to two District

Championships in 1983 and ’84, as well as, two Regional Runner up titles in the same years.

Class of 2013 Hall of Fame member and his nominator to the Class of 2016, Chris Graham,

reflects on the impact of Steve to our athletic programs: “What makes Steve so special is he

was also exceptional Baseball player. As a senior when Steve was a freshman, you always like

to look at the youth of the program to make sure the future is in good hands. He was a great

athlete that worked hard and had a real tough attitude that wouldn't take too much off of

anyone. I remember thinking that Coach Edwards had built a strong nucleus of players and

PVHS was going to be the team to beat for many years”

On the baseball field, Steve lettered 3 years. His participation would help earn his teams

district championships in 1983, ’84, ’85, and 1986. The ’84 team would also win the Regional

and State Championship.

His influence on the Baseball team is evidenced in comments from former coach, Mike

Nunnally. “Steve was a coachable, hard driving, competitive player who strived to get better

all the time. He was a five tool baseball player who could run, throw, catch, hit and hit with

power.”

After graduation, Steve attended George Mason University, where he was a member of and

letterman for the Men’s Basketball program. Steve would also be selected to the 1991 All

Academic Colonial Athletic Association team.

Currently, Steve lives with his wife and two kids in Arizona and he has been self-employed for

the last ten years. When he is not working, he has been active in coaching baseball, basketball

and football for youth sports in Virginia and Arizona

Jason Orr

Jason was an excellent athlete during his years here at Park View having earned letters in

Baseball, Wrestling and Football. It is a rare occasion in the history of our school that athletes

participate and excel in 3 sports during their high school career. Jason Orr was one of these

exceptional athletes.

Jason’s career at Park View began as an 8th grader, when he was brought up participate with

the football and wrestling programs. His success would continue.

In Football, Jason would help lead the 94 team to District and Regional Championships.

Individually, he received All District and All Met honors. Jason still holds the PVHS record for

average punting yards/game with 40 yards.

As a member of the baseball team, Jason lettered all four years. He was a member of the 93

District Championship team, and named three times to the All District team. Jason also

received honors for the All Region team as a junior and senior.

Jason continued his athletic success as a member of the wrestling team. While Jason wrestled

all four years, he excelled as a sophomore, junior and senior. During each of those years, he

was awarded All District, All Region and All State honors. He also helped led two teams to

Regional appearances, 1 of those a championship team.

Jason’s 23 pins in 1995 were the second most pins in a season.

His Hall of Fame wrestling coach, Greg Mitchell, in his letter of recommendation for Jason

says: “I have known Jason Orr for over 25 years and he will be a valuable asset to the Hall of

Fame. While at Park View, Jason was an important contributor to our sports programs and the

Patriot community.”

Currently, Jason works as a private investigator and security specialist. In his community, he

coaches baseball and his daughter’s softball team. In addition, he officiates high school and

club wrestling with the Winchester Wrestling Association.

Jeff Saylor

Our last inductee this evening, is Jeff Saylor.

During his time as an athlete at Park View, Jeff was a member of the football and track

programs.

Jeff played Freshman and JV Football, and during his senior year, started at right tackle for the

Varsity team. It was in his senior season that Jeff would help his team win the District

Championship.

In the Winter and Spring, Jeff starred as a member of the Winter track and track program. He

lettered all 4 years and was a part of the 1984 District Championship team.

Former coach, Ed Scott recalls: “Jeff was an extremely hard worker on his technique,

bounding drills and in the weight room. He was a very consistent thrower. The state meet win

was not a surprise to me as he had thrown 160' + several times.”

Individually, Jeff became the only sophomore to qualify for the State meet, where he placed

6th in the Discus; he would qualify again as a junior, placing 3rd. As a senior, Jeff was the State

Discus Champion with a winning throw of 162’8,” a distance that was almost more than 20

feet further than his nearest competitor.

Jeff also won the District Championship for both shot put and discus as a senior.

Roger Canaff, a former teammate says: “Jeff’s athletic ability was truly exceptional, especially

where the discus throw was concerned. I remember watching him throw the discus in

competition; it was like watching a palm tree in a hurricane. I have never, before or since,

seen a more beautiful and poetic expression of athletic ability.”

After graduating from Park View, Jeff was recruited by several schools, and attended George

Mason University, where he made the track team as a walk on. He threw the shot put and

discus for two years, before taking an internship with the United States Government.

Today, Jeff is the Director of a Contracting Office for the Department of Labor. Jeff is the proud

father of 3 boys and wife, Lisa.

Park View High School is proud of Jeff and his contributions to Park View athletics during his

time as a Patriot.

We have begun a new tradition of recognizing the milestone anniversaries of our previous

state champions.

Park View has won 15 State Team Championships and had 40 Individual State Champions since

1976.

To win a State Championship is an incredible accomplishment, and at this time we would like

to recognize those teams and individuals that accomplished that here at Park View:

25th Anniversary of the 1991 Boys Soccer State Champions

With us tonight are ___________________________ from the 1991 Boys Soccer State

Championship team. Coached by Phil Rosenthal and Rick Sarr, this team became the 1st

Patriot Soccer team to win a state championship with a 3-0 win over William Byrd HS where

the Patriots outshot their opponent by 31-1 in the final. Leading the scoring attack was

forward Terrance Gunnels with 2 goals that were assisted by Brian Bechtold. Midfielder

Johan Allerbrand provided the third goal with an assist by Steven Dardis. Reflecting back

on that season, Patriots goalkeeper Greg Prouty shared, “For me, the best parts of

that championship season were not just beating Chancellor in the preseason and

Regionals, but winning the state final at home in front of a sold out stadium.”

Park View went on to successfully defend their 1991 title in the following season.

35th Anniversary of State Gymnastics Champion: Liza Zuraw

A 3 sport athlete, Lisa holds district titles in gymnastics and track and regional and state

titles in gymnastics. In 1981, she was the State Champion in All Around competition with a

score of 31.23. In addition to her mark on the gymnastics program, she currently holds 2

Park View track records in high jump and 100 meter hurdles. After receiving a scholarship

to Longwood College, Lisa holds the Longwood record in vault, floor and all around and in

1986 set the Virginia State Meet vault record. Lisa is an inaugural member of the 2010

PVHS Hall of Fame and was coached by Hall of Fame coach Kathleen Dugger and Judy Miller

Self.

30th Anniversary of State Wrestling Champion: Scott Steele

As a member of our talented wrestling program, Scott Steele was the 1986 district, region and

state champion in the 132 lbs weight class. After 30 years, Scott still currently holds 2 PVHS

Wrestling records. His dedication to wrestling has earned him numerous honors including:

Washington Post All Met ; PVHS Male Athlete of the year in 1987 and he was an inaugural

member of the 2010 PVHS Hall of Fame. Following high school, Scott attended the U.S. Naval

Academy Prep School, where he was captain of the wrestling team and played football. Scott

was coached by Hall of Fame Coaches Landon “Mack” Piercy and Greg Mitchell.

30th Anniversary of State Track Champion: Eddie Zuraw

Eddie Zuraw was one of 3 state champion pole vaulters from Park View. His AA state

championship in 1986 was with a height of 14 feet and 5 inches.

Teammate and Hall of Fame member Ken Wright remembers: “Eddie was one of the most

athletically gifted people I have ever met. Speed of a sprinter, natural body awareness of a

gymnast, and could high jump 6 feet without real practice. He was also a great teammate,

taking time to help all of us. Great athlete, great teammate, great friend.”

Teammate Stephen Mackey reflects on Eddie’s accomplishment: “We matured together both

as athletes and as young men, learning about sports and life along the way. When Eddie

cleared 15' at the 1986 regional meet I can remember our entire "family" rushing the pit to

tackle and hug him—it was an incredible moment and one we will all cherish forever.” Eddie

was coached by his dad, Ed Zuraw and Hall of Fame coach Ed Scott.

25th Anniversary of State Wrestling Champion: J.P. Taylor

A three sport athlete, J.P. Taylor played football, baseball and wrestled during his time at Park

View High School. Although he was successful in all 3 sports, his greatest accomplishments

came as a wrestler for the Patriots. He led the team to 2 District championships, a Regional

Championship and twice a State Runner Up. Individually, J.P. was a District Champ, Region

Champ and was the AA State Champion in the 125 lb weight class in 1991. Former coach, Greg

Mitchell, reflects on J.P.: “In his attire, demeanor and presentation, J.P. Taylor has always

been an outstanding young man. As an athlete, he was a hardworking and ambitious team

player who set exemplary examples for his peers.”

At the time, J.P. held the school records for Most Falls in a Season; Most team points in a

season; Career Most Falls and Most Team Points. J.P. was inducted in to the Class of 2014 Hall

of Fame and was coached by fellow Hall of Fame members, Landon “Mack” Piercy and Greg

Mitchell.

25th Anniversary of State Wrestling Champion: John Kotch

As a 4 year letter winner in wrestling, John led the Patriots to District Championship in 1989

and 1991 and a Regional Championship in 1991. Individually, he was an All-District Champion

Wrestler for all 4 years; a Regional Champion for 3 years and was the 1991 State Wrestling

Champion in the 171 weight class. In addition to these honors, John was named twice to the

All Met Wrestling team. At the time, John held the school record for Most Team Points in a

Career with 608 points.

Former teammate and being inducted tonight, John Jackson, reflects on John Kotch: “John

was, in my opinion, one of the best athletes at Park View and physically was as strong as

anyone I knew…There wasn't a day that went by at practice when John wasn't going by

slapping people on the helmet, telling them to step up and practice/play the way we were

coached and not to slack off.” John was inducted in to the Class of 2014 Hall of Fame and was

coached by fellow Hall of Fame members, Landon “Mack” Piercy and Greg Mitchell.

25th Anniversary of State Gymnastics Champion: Stacy Spitzer

Stacy Spitzer made her mark on the PV Gymnastics program as a freshman. After placing 2nd in

the Regional competition, she went on to become the 1991 AA State Champion in All Around

Competition with a score of 31.45 and added another state Championship in the Vault

competition with a score of 9.15.

Her coach Michelle Ritenour Maged reflects on Stacy’s accomplishments: “Stacy came to Park

View with a lot of gymnastic experience under her belt; but that didn’t stop her from wanting

to work hard and be the best she could be. Stacy was a very dependable and consistent

competitor which in turn helped her put up big scores when the team needed them most. This

made her a pleasure to coach and the reason she became a 2 time state champion!”

25th Anniversary of State Gymnastics Champion: Whitney “Crissy Mansfield Madine

As witnessed earlier this evening, Whitney helped the Gymnastics program earn District

championship honors in 1988, ‘89 and ‘90; Regional Championship honors in 1988 and ‘89;

and State Championships in 1988, ‘89 and ‘90. Individually, she would win District honors on

the beam, and a 3rd place at States on the Vault. In 1991, she was the regional champion on

the vault and the State Champion on the Bars. Whitney was coached by Hall of Fame member

Kathleen Dugger and 6 time state gymnastics champion at Stonewall Jackson High School,

Michelle Ritenour Maged.

25th Anniversary of State Track Champion: Terri Braxton Colwell

A one sport athlete, Teri Braxton lettered in Track all 4 years of her Park View career. She was

the face of the girls track program, as she was a District Champion in 1987 and 1988 and she

still owns the school record in the Long Jump and Triple Jump. In 1991 she raised her level of

competition and was a State Champion in the Long Jump and Triple Jump. At the conclusion of

that season, Teri was named Honorable Mention on the All-USA Today Track Team.

Many words have been used to describe Teri……..friendly, a great teammate, a listener, and

humble. Teri celebrated success whether it was team related or personal. She will also be

remembered as a fierce competitor wanted to win and improve. In short…she was a coaches

dream. Teri was inducted in to the 2012 Class of the Hall of Fame and was coached by Louise

Spicer.
