This magazine was designed and
produced by the Graphic Design
Production class of Spring 2009.
The concept behind our design was
the idea of doing “good design”. We
acknowledge that designers have the
power to influence the masses through
visual communication. We believe that
every designer has an ethical obligation
towards conveying a message that is
not destructive. We believe in honesty,
integrity, and the intent to improve
society with proactive design.
Through this magazine we are both
responding to contemporary design and
calling for a new outlook on its purposes
and implications.
As a team we brainstormed how to
convey this concept through our design
and layout. We decided to use recycled
paper to emphasize our duty to preserve
the environment. We also used a more
handmade approach to layout design to
incorporate the process and appreciate
our graphic design roots. We feel that
these two concepts are vital to the idea
of this “redesign”. Since the invention of
desktop publishing, graphic design has
become ubiquitous and redundant. We
want to reintroduce the importance of the
design process that seems to have been
lost in the past few decades. This, along
with doing “good design” is key to the
success of society in the future.

Throughout the history of humankind language has created itself
in many forms to symbolically represent that which we hope
to express. It is always a process of unfolding…one thought
after another.
This magazine represents the combined thoughts and creative
efforts of the spring 2009 Graphic Design Production class at
Pacific. It showcases the application of design across the major
areas of layout, typography, image manipulation and time-based
interactivity. The semester-long focus of the course was to fuse
beautiful and creative design with production correct formats
and techniques.
This seamless integration between form and function is not an
easy one. It is equally influenced by style, individual creativity
and changing technology. The overriding influence of technology
makes the understanding of file formats, resolution issues,

the color separation process, typography, cross-platform
compatibility and WWW requirements an essential aspect
of contemporary design.
Today’s designer’s, perhaps more now than ever before, are
required to be environmentally aware with the objects they
produce and the processes used to create them. They are also
required to be responsible citizens of the planet on which we
live. This magazine addresses some of those concerns and the
efforts of the students to make a difference with the design
applications they produce.
The directions which graphic design can take are many. The
ones represented by this magazine are of creativity, problem
solving and cooperation and were accomplished with mutual
respect, humor, and a willingness to work together.

I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
I’m currently a Junior in Graphic Design at the University of the
Pacific in Stockton, California; however, my actual major back in
Brazil is Product Design.
I’ve been interested in art since school. I wasn’t sure about which
major I wanted to do in college because I was also interested in
Math and Physics, but I decided in design because I was inspired
by a great professor that I had when I was in the seventh grade.
Besides that, I was influenced by my step-father who works with
large companies that design products, such as cell phones and
computers. Because of him, design has always been part of
my life.
My experiences of studying one semester in another country,
having to deal with a different language and seeing how people
from another culture think, was a really enriching experience
both personally and academically. I have no doubt that Graphic
Design will help me as a Product Designer. When I return to
Brazil, I’ll have a hard time deciding if I want to work with
Product or Graphic Design, perhaps even both.

Sergio Rodrigues was born in 1927
and graduated in 1952 from the
Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo
da Universidade do Brasil (Architecture
and Urbanism School of the Brazilian
University), currently known as the
Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro
(UFRJ The Federal University of the State
of Rio de Janeiro).
He is one of the most important designers
of Brazilian furniture, creating works that
search for a national identity.
One of his most famous products is the
Poltrona Mole (Soft Armchair) of 1957,
which received a prize in the International
Furniture Contest in Cantu, Italy in 1961.
At this time, Isa of Bergamo, Italy started
to manufacture the armchair and export it
to many countries.

I’m involved in different applications
of design. In Brazil my focus was
Product Design. I have worked with a lot
of materials, for example plastic, metal,
resin, and wood.
One of my projects was to replicate an
existing product that could be found in
my home. I made the vacuum cleaner
above with wood and painted it with
spray paint. Which one is the original?
I don’t have a lot of experience in
Graphic Design, but I’ve done some
illustrations using the mono type and
stencil techniques. I have designed web
site mock-ups, and developed corporate
identities. One of the areas that I am most
interested is in the graphic applications of
product design.

Assim o ator volta-se para seu instrumento criador espiri-
tual e físico. Sua mente, sua vontade, e seus sentimentos
combinam-se, para mobilizar todos os seus elementos
interiores.Extraem vida da �cção que é a peça e fazem-na parecer
mais real, mais bem fundamentados os seus objetivos.
Tudo isso o ajuda a sentir o papel, sua veracidade inata, a
crer na real possibilidade daquilo que se está passando em
cena. Em outras palavras, esse triunvirato de forças interi-
ores assume o tom, a cor, os matizes e os estados de ânimo
de elementos que elas comandam. Absorvem seu con-
teúdo espiritual. Também emitem energia, poder, vontade,
emoções e pensamentos. Enxertam nos elementos essas
partículas vivas do papel. Desses enxertos vão brotando,
gradualmente, o que chamamos de elementos do artista
no papel.- E para onde se dirigem? – perguntaram.- Para algum ponto muito distante, em cujo rumo a trama da peça os arrasta. Avançam em direção a objetivos criadores, impelidos por anseios interiores, pela ambição e por movi-mentos inerentes ao caráter dos papéis. Os objetos em que concentram a atenção levam-nos a entrar em contato com os outros personagens. São fascinados pela veracidade artística da peça. E observem que todas estas coisas estão no palco.

Hi, I am Hareem Cheema! I was born in Lahore, Pakistan. I spent some of my childhood in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I
moved to Colorado when I was seven and then to the Bay Area four years later. I am currently a senior at the University of the Pacific, Stockton campus studying Graphic Design and business.
Since childhood I was praised for my artwork and creativity. As I got older, I developed an interest in working with computers. I decided to combine my interests and major in Graphic Design, in which I can combine my talents to produce a variety of work to further my conceptual thinking and creativity.
In the future, I wish to channel my design work towards positive change and energy in society. I am certain that the education that I have received in the past four years will prepare me to be successful in my endeavors.

this is my Inspiration
Paul Klee was a Swiss painter of
German nationality. I am inspired by his work because of his rich use of repetitive pattern and color. He was inspired by Islamic text work and Islamic tile because of its flat quality. Islamic art is non–representational, which was another inspiration for his work. I am also inspired by Islamic art, and like his work for his use of pattern and color. I also like his use of mixed media and combining
different mediums to create artwork.
He often used geometric forms and his
work had a fragile childlike quality to
them. He has inspired me in my use of
color and pattern, as well as layering of
different mediums and experimentation.
As a designer, I am influenced by his use
of geometric forms and also want to
experiment more with the look of simple
childlike quality added into my designs.
The works that I have chosen to show are ones that show my style,
which includes a lot of use of pattern and color. I really enjoyed making these pieces because I could incorporate so many techniques as well as ideas into my designs. These projects all had a strong theme and concept behind them. One of the pieces shown here is my Pakistani and Indian Restaurant design, which was was
inspired by the atmosphere and culture of the region. With my use of color and pattern, I created a South Asian look. I created multiple pieces for this project, inspired by my painterly style and used mixed media for the look of the restaurant to come together. I used fabric to add to the theme and concept of the project. I also experimented with this medium and incorporated it into my designs.

La u ren Friedrich[noun]and this is my Biogra phy
Lauren Friedrich My name is Lauren and I am approaching my senior
year in Graphic Design at the University of the Pacific
in Stockton, California. I was born and raised in sunny
Modesto, California.
From a young age to my years as a college student, my love of
design has blossomed from playful craft projects into creations
that have a motive to communicate and express thought. Before
Pacific, I attended Modesto Junior College, which allowed me to
explore this growing passion. I wasn’t fully aware of the direction
I wanted to pursue in the arts and humanities until I declared
myself as a Graphic Design major upon entering Pacific. My
decision as a transfer student was influenced by an art history
professor who exposed me to the many attractive styles of
art, and later, to an unforgettable experience that brought me
to the streets of Italy. It was at this point when I realized that
Graphic Design would always allow exploration and new
discoveries in design and art, as well as a feeling of passion
towards the work I produce.
I am a person who is driven, dedicated, and grateful for what
I am doing, not only because of the experiences I’m receiving at
Pacific, but also for my supportive family. My goal as a designer is
to have a positive influence and always maintain the enthusiasm
I have for art. Wherever I am in the future, I know I’ll be designing
with passion. Designing has become an exciting part of my life
that is now integrated into my everyday experiences, such as
travel, fashion, and cooking.

The works of Willem Sandberg are
influential to me as a developing
Graphic Designer because of his
experimental exploration of type as
forms. As a Graphic Designer from the
Netherlands, Sandberg was influenced by
the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany. This is
a style in art history that I find fascinating
because of the simplification of forms that
are used in dynamic ways. Sandberg used
a lot of contrasting type sizes that created
interesting compositions of white space.
Along with size differences, Sandberg
played with textures that contrasted
with the smoothness of the type. This
juxtaposition of different textures is
appealing because of the rhythm that is
created throughout the page. Even with
all of these contrasting elements and
textures, Sandberg allowed for his work
to remain clean and simple. I like the
overall balance he was able to maintain
in his designs, while varying the different
graphic variables.
I am passionate about graphic design because of its ability to communicate in a way that
stimulates ideas and emotions. I hope to be a communicator through my designs by making a
positive difference within communities, provoking action and thought among all types of people.
Lauren Friedh
In the work I create, my goal is to
always have a concept-driven design
where every element has meaning and
purpose. Along with this structure, I
have an interest in how shapes can form
negative space to create interesting
compositions. Shapes are repeated
for a sense of rhythm, figure-ground
relationships are explored, and
typography is placed functionally
and visually in the various works I
have done. As my inspiration, I hope
my study and interest in Sandberg will
strengthen my typographic skills and
allow me to explore the different ways I
can create contrast and variation in my
designs. My future work would benefit
from Sandberg’s use of textures, either
by repetition in forms or in physical
appearance, giving it more dimension.

Glynnis Glynnis I’ve never been very good with these biography things. What
do I say about myself? There’s always just so much! But I shall
try for the sake of the reader or whoever may want to know
more about my short life.
So to start with a standard beginning, I was born and raised in
San Jose, CA pretty close to San Francisco. Just putting that
down as a landmark because it is easy to get dwarfed by such
a well-known city. In any case, I have lived in the same house
for 20 years, a house that hasn’t really changed except for the
number of plants and pets. So you can assume that after living in
a not-quite-but-almost-boring place for some time, a kid would
start making things up for entertainment. And that kid just
happened to be me.
I do not know when my interest in art began. Maybe it was when
I saw Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” for the first time. I would
sit at the kitchen table with a stack of blank paper by my side
and draw pictures, illustrating my own stories for hours. They
were pretty wild stories. I have a brain that soaks up every
random piece of information, mostly through my own personal
reading and research projects. In addition to art, I love history
and literature. Off the top of my head I could tell you the name of
Napoleon’s horse and what the difference is between a galleass
and a frigate.
My interest in design did not really start until much later,
probably right before entering college. It’s the posters that got
me and book covers. I like the idea of my designs having some
immortality. But for now, it is back to studying and preparing
myself for the day when I, too, enter that elite world of being a
real graphic designer.

If I had to choose an influence, it would
be Alphonse Mucha. I do not know
why I feel so drawn to his work. Maybe
it’s the organic forms, maybe it’s the
detail, maybe it’s just the sheer, elegant
beauty of his pieces. However, I think it
is mostly the fact that it is a nostalgic
style, something that uses the fine arts,
the past, and design to create this unique
means of visual communication. There is
also the grace that is imbued in his work;
I would love to nurture a style that
includes such a thing.
Thus, in relation to my own pieces,
perhaps a person may see this
influence or perhaps not. Mucha is not
the only designer that influences me,
but he is certainly an important one.

The work I do is very much a mix
between extreme detail and
simplicity. Two complete opposites, but
that is how I like to create new things,
by juxtaposing two different elements
against each other. One characteristic
that is prominent in much of my designs
are the hand-drawn illustrations. I like to
think of myself as an illustrator or at least
as someone who can work the fine arts
as well as a computer. Conveying an
abstract concept is also a favorite of
mine; it is a challenge to show such a
thing visually and I gladly welcome
it anytime.

Hi, I am Samantha Kowalski! I’m currently a Junior/Senior
at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. I’m
working towards completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic
Design and obtaining a certificate in Pre-Law. I am originally from
Elk Grove, California, but moved to Salinas in 1995 when I was
eight years old. I’m an only child which influences why I am self
motivated and independent.
I became interested in Graphic Design in my Senior year at
Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas, California in 2005. Prior to
my Senior year I never took an art course other than art history.
In my Senior year I enrolled in the Yearbook class which allowed
me to explore an unknown artistic talent. In Yearbook I was
responsible for the budget, but ended up designing the entire
book. I designed the page layouts. At this time, I was asked by
Josten’s to apply for a position upon receiving a Graphic Design
degree. I created the name for the yearbook “Transformation”
because during this time my high school was going through a
redesign. New buildings were built and improvements were made.
Besides art I have other interests. I am interested in law. I live for
the moment for the day I can stand before a Judge and argue a
case. My ultimate goals are to become a political figure who can
influence and affect change. I am passionate in all that I do. Every
project whether it’s large or small I throw myself into it. Whether
it is art, law, or something else I will remain passionate and never
forget how I got to where I am today!

Michal Batory is a famous Graphic
Designer in France. Not only is
he famous, but his posters are all cover
the country. I really like how his use of
collage and interesting juxtapositions.
My favorite design technique is collage,
which Michal Batory primarily uses,
because it brings together different
images to create a whole new image. His
typography is playful and dynamic. For
instance, typography doesn’t have to
be conventional it can be manipulated
to work with any image. One reason he
is inspirational is because I can never
read any of his posters. I think that many
times the content of the poster can
take us away from the creativity of the
design. This language barrier allows me
to see the design first and then try to
differentiate his message. In this way I
challenge myself as a designer because
communication is essential to good
Graphic Design.

The work that I feature above shows
some layouts that I have created
within Adobe InDesign, Illustrator,
and Photo Shop. Not only do I show
my Graphic Design work, but also an
example of a computer based illustration
combined with the traditional media of
drawing in the image of the Nutcracker. I
also show an example of a painting that I
have done in the upper right hand corner
of the Flowers.
I approach design in a unique way. I
create designs that are different and
unique. I incorporate bold color and
compositions that stand out. I believe
that design should be fun and creative.
My designs incorporate something special
that makes them unique. My favorite
technique is collage. I like the layering of
images and combining of images to make
a new picture. Collage takes a special
talent because it utilizes all the skills that
are learned through the major of
Graphic Design.

David MaymanI am currently a 20 year old third year Graphic Design student at
the University of the Pacific with a passion for making a visual
impact on the world. I strive to pursue fresh, creative solutions to
design while maintaining outstanding quality.
I was born in West Hills, CA, one of the many suburbs of Los
Angeles. I attended New Community Jewish High School in its first
year of existence, and helped build it to quickly become one of the
largest private schools in Los Angeles. There I began my interest in
Graphic Design by designing for different clubs, bands I was in, and
the school newspaper. I also found a passion for music, and joined
several bands as a drummer.
In my second year at Pacific, I became the first sophomore to be
hired by ASUOP Design, the associated students’ design firm. After
a year as a designer, I quickly rose up becoming the rehire. In my
second year at ASUOP Design I took a supervisor role over the
other designers and became producer of ProwlTV, a brand new
closed-circuit TV network on campus. In 2009 I created animated
ads for ProwlTV using motion graphics skills I had taught myself. I
was responsible for the branding of ProwlTV, which is an ongoing
project. As of June 2009 I will be promoted to Art Director of
ASUOP Design, and will supervise seven other designers.
A good graphic designer inherently has the power to influence
the masses and change history. I have a strong belief that we, as
the next generation of graphic designers, must see our potential
to influence the masses; we must make sure that we personally
believe in what we are influencing. There is unbounded merit in the
prospect of ethical Graphic Design, and I have dedicated myself
wholly to this cause.

Milton Glaser is a renowned
graphic designer and illustrator
from the 20th century. His design
solutions are simple yet elegant. He
has the outstanding ability to find the
most communicative way develop a
design without becoming convoluted or
too complicated. His work is also very
fun, stylized, and doesn’t take itself so
seriously. His work is highly identifiable
and strangely understandable by
anybody. It is freshly engaging.
I also admire what Milton Glaser did to
the field of illustration. In the 1950s the
quality of photography finally began to
surpass that of illustration. Milton Glaser
and his associates at Push Pin Studios
saw this trend and revitalized illustration
by providing something that photography
could not. They ushered in the age of
conceptual illustration, which proved to
be a very valuable communicative device.
My work may not be visually influenced
by Milton Glaser, but it is conceptually.
The effect his work has had on modern
design is very fascinating, and I admire his
courage to start such a radically different
style. He was one of many trailblazers
that shaped the way we see design today.

For the past eight years I have been
discovering my design style and
determining what I feel is valuable. At
this point in my design career I strive
for diversity. I feel that in this day and
age we must be able to do anything and
everything, and somehow even more. I try
to keep my over arching goal of utmost
quality in mind at all times in my design.
I try to base my designs strictly on the
content they are portraying. I believe
in having a reason for every decision
that is made in the design. It is my goal
to portray the concept as clearly as
possible while still exploring elegant and
innovative solutions. Though this may
seem restrictive, I do not let this diminish
my creativity in any way. I feel that if the
message is lost, the design piece loses
its meaning and impact. I strive to make
my designs meaningful and hope to stray
away from simple “eye-candy” design.

I was born in Denver, Colorado, on January 29, 1987. I was the
fourth of five children to be born in the U.S. after my parents
emigrated from Mexico in 1982.
After moving around for some time, my family settled in
Stockton, California in 1998. I attended Franklin High and
graduated in 2005 with honors. I completed general education
courses at San Joaquin Delta College and transferred to the
University of the Pacific as a Graphic Design major in 2007.
Growing up, I lived well within the realms of poverty. Though
my family went through many hardships, looking back, I feel
fortunate to have had a loving family and siblings that share
my enthusiasm for art. Thinking retrospectively about my life,
I’m afflicted and at the same time equally grateful to have had
such an experience. In many ways, it prepared me for future
challenges by asserting the value of work ethics and forcing me
to be creative with my resources. In the end, my experiences
have had the effect of encouraging my development as an artist.
As a student I [try and] have tried to continually challenge
myself, as I’m driven by my concepts. Initially I produced art not
for “art’s sake” but art for my sake. However, in the process of
exploring possibilities and researching various topics I began
to understand and develop a great interest in practical art and
design that serves a greater purpose beyond aesthetic qualities.
This new sensibility has helped me to reconnect to the world
around me and refocus as an artist.

My design work often draws
from a variety of sources and
is influenced by an array of artists and
styles. However, an artist that I continually
refer back to for inspiration is Herbert
Bayer. He was born on April 5, 1900 in a
town near Salzburg in Northern Austria.
He became known as a “Renaissance Man”
for mastering various trades including
graphic design, painting, photography,
typography, and architecture. At age 20,
He ventured to Germany and discovered
the Bauhaus school of art, which he joined
in 1921. After four years at the Bauhaus,
Bayer was appointed director of printing
and advertising. Bayer was among the
leaders pushing the limits of design.
What I admire most about this artist
is the practicality and innovation of
his design practices and the universal
ideology he imbued in his work. For
me, his work and ideas have come to
represent an infrastructure; a sort of
starting point from which I can spring
board into my own ideas.

try to employ any particular
style. I feel that the overall look should
derive from the conceptualization of the
project at hand. After all, the concept
is usually the foundation of any design
project and everything stems from it. So
as a designer I tend to focus a lot of my

paper consists of 100% post consumer paper is FSC Certified and
alternative fiber papers, made with 100% green energy, and is Green
Seal Certified and archival.
The pages within the magazine are printed on Neenah Mesa White
Smooth 80lb text paper. This paper is made with 50% alternative fiber,
such as bagasse or bamboo, and 50% post consumer fiber.

The magazine was printed on an EPSON Stylus Pro 4800 printer with
printer profile Pro 4800 EMP_MK and media type enhanced matte
paper on superphoto 2880dpi with printer color management off.
The typefaces that were used were Gotham Book for the body text
and for the headings we used Base12sfsc, and a few individualized
typefaces for the individual spreads.
Environmental Savings
By printing on environmental paper we were able to save six pounds
of wood which is less than one tree and saved enough oxygen for
one person. We saved seven gallons of water which is enough for one
person to take an eight minute shower. We saved enough energy to
power one house for one day. We saved two pounds of carbon
emissions which is equivalent for one tree growing for ten years. We
saved one pound of solid waste which equals one 32 gallon container.
