2
Potential Causes of Landfill Fires
Lithium Ion Batteries – not as common in Class III Landfills
Lightning – covered required every 14 days in Class III Landfills
Arson
Heavy Equipment Fires – park equipment away from
active disposal area
Hot Loads including:
Stumps from brush burning
Coals from fire places

Fire and SSO Prevention
Operator Training
Random Load Inspections
Segregate Suspicious Loads
Spread out and smother with soil
Keep stockpiled soil near the working face to cover
Keep a log of problematic loads and customers to check more
frequently
SSO’s are typically created by not properly extinguishing fires.

4
SSO Detection and Documentation
Smoke Observed by Operator
Usually accompanies a depression
Utilize an infrared temperature gun to delineate area
Notify the state regulatory agency immediately via email (written
documentation) and phone call, leave a voice mail.
Log the fire, who you called, immediate steps taken

SSO Action Plan Submittal – September 2017
SAFETY FIRST! – SSO can cause drop outs. Stay up wind of smoke.
Create a safety plan for your project.
Move active disposal area a minimum of 50 feet away from SSO.
Monitor and collect surface temperature data with an (IR) Infrared
Temperature Gun prior to implementing the action plan.
Cover entire area with copious amounts of soil (minimum 3 feet).
Monitor and collect surface temperature data with an IR temp gun
after implementing the action plan.
Dig test pits once a month to confirm the SSO is extinguished
through IR temp gun and Carbon Monoxide Monitoring.
