Jan’s Jottings Class and Trip Information for September thru December 2016 Welcome to a new year of learning and enrichment activities at ILR. Or what was ILR. We start a new academic year with a new name: Lifelong Learning Institute, or LLI for short. And a great name it is, too. It contains no harmful words like “elder” or “retired” or “old” or “aging.” None of that nonsense for us! We’re not really retired; we’re just evolving into even better versions of ourselves! Our new LLI has many exciting activities planned for 2016-17. Some are still in the embryonic stages as I write this in late May. By the time you read this, many new plans may be finalized, and you may have already attended our August Open House to announce some new activities. As your new president, I have at least made one of my most important decisions: what to call my column. In keeping with presidential tradi- tion I knew it had to start with the letter “J.” There aren’t too many options for “J”, so “Jan’s Jottings” it is. In case you do not know me, here are a few “tidbits.” I am a former high school English teacher at Hastings High School in Barry County. I taught many different classes over my 32-year career, most frequently English Literature, Advanced Placement English and Freshman literature and composition. I joined ILR in 2002 while still living in Hastings (I now live in Portage), attending classes and luncheons at the Fehsenfeld Center. I was soon encouraged by my ILR friends to consider teaching classes. I taught my first class, a survey course on Shake- speare, in the fall of 2003 in Hastings, and then I repeated the class in Bat- tle Creek in the winter of 2004. I have now taught 40 classes for ILR, and my experiences have been unbelievably TABLE OF CONTENTS Name Change & Membership Info 2 ILR Kickoff Luncheon 3 KCC Cultural Calendar 4 Calendar of Classes 5 Battle Creek Classes 6-8 KCC Athletic Schedules 9 Battle Creek Registration Form 10 Hastings Registration Form 11 Hastings Classes 12-13 Curriculum, Luncheon & Event Changes 14 Hastings Registration Form 15 Battle Creek Registration Form 16 NEW! I have served on the ILR (now LLI!) board of directors since 2009 as secretary, board member at large, and last year as vice- president. Serving on the board has also been a most rewarding experience. I encourage all of you to consider giving it a try. I got my feet wet, so to speak, by first attending Curriculum Committee meetings. That might be a good way for you to become more involved. In concluding my first “jottings,” I offer my thanks and appreciation to the previous presidents I have known and who will serve as my inspiration in the coming year: Terri Schreffler and her “tidbits,” Paula Higgins and her “ponderings,” De Davis and his “deliberations” and the late, great Gary King and his – well, I can’t remember that word he used, but I know it started with a “G.” (It couldn’t have been “Gossip” could it?) I also wish to reiterate a great point Terri made at our May luncheon as her final “tidbit.” She said that ILR members have become like her family. I whole-heartedly agree. My ILR involvement really helped me adjust to my new life as a retiree over 14 years ago. I hope all of you feel the same way. And I also hope that if you know of someone struggling to adjust to retirement life or who is in need of some new activities to look forward to, you will encourage that person to give our organization a try. (And don’t forget our new program to invite someone to attend one class for free!) Our group has a new name, and some new kinds of activities planned for 2016-17, but we remain a great way for our members to meet new people, to make new friends, to enrich our minds and to learn new things. See you in class, at a luncheon or at a curriculum meeting!

6. Let’s AMP Up Our Longevity: An Introduction to the Aging Mastery Program® (AMP) Life expectancy has increased dramatically over the past 50 years, yet people are generally unprepared for this increased longevity. This class will provide an overview of AMP, a nationwide effort designed by the National Council on Aging that offers an innova-tive approach to guide individuals through this phase of life. This comprehensive and fun approach to aging well encourages people to take actions to enhance their health, financial well-being, social connectedness, and overall quality of life. Central to the AMP philosophy is the belief that modest life-style changes can produce big results and that people can be empowered and supported to cultivate health and longevity. Equally important, the program encourages mastery—developing sustainable behav-iors over time. Participants attending this overview class will have an opportunity to join the larger AMP program launching in Battle Creek in April. The full core AMP program is 10 weeks, but optional elective classes and activities will also be offered. NOTE: This overview class will be held at the Kool Family Community Center (formerly Burnham Brook) in the 2nd floor Burnham Brook Board Room. Wednesdays Member: $35 Oct 5-Dec 14 Non-Member: $45 10 am-12 pm Karla Fales

She will also introduce students to the cuisine of the region by preparing a sampling of some popular Israeli dishes. In addition, the first 15 students to register will also receive a small container of Dead Sea Salt to take home with them. Students will watch the 1952 film starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reyn-olds in its entirety, then hear fun and interesting facts about the movie and its stars from your instructor, Terry Dennison. Hear about health issues the stars struggled through during filming, and understand why and how filming had to happen during the day but appear as if it were at night. Tricks of the trade related to singing and dubbing used during the production, and personal experiences your instructor had with some of the actors will also be revealed. As a special treat, an actual costume worn by Debbie Reynolds from another performance with Donald O’ Connor in 1987 at Universal Studios Amphitheater called “Together Again for the First Time” will also be on display. 11. Everyday Language: Why Do We Say That, and What Does it Mean? Words are essential to our everyday communication, but have you ever thought about why we choose the ones we do to send our messages? In this class students will explore the interesting and sometimes odd reasons, methods and words we use to talk with one another. How are new words formed? Why do we compound words like “Aircraft carrier” in some instances, but then decide to use a hyphenation at other times like when we write “up-tight”? How to we develop acronyms and who decides when to do that? How do we invent new words or phrases, for example when we call our dog a “pooch”? Do you know what theories of speaking are, and why they have unique names like Bow Wow Theory or Matu-ration Theory? What are common mistranslations between languages and cultures, and are there sometimes no good translations for us because a word just doesn’t exist in English? How do dialects impact language and its meaning? Although you may have never asked yourself many of these questions, come to this class to hear the interesting answers and history behind our language and how we use it. Tuesdays Member: $20 Nov 15-Nov 29 Non-Member: $30 1-3 pm Jody Owens

Starting in fall of 2016 the LLI curriculum meeting structure will be changed to encourage greater

participation from membership. Meetings in Battle Creek will be held three times per year, with Barry

County meetings being held twice per year. All LLI members are encouraged to attend to share class ideas,

socialize with other members and LLI staff, and help connect the LLI with possible new instructors. Meetings

will be informal to allow free flowing conversation. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Following is the

curriculum planning meeting schedule for 2016-17:

Battle Creek:

Friday, October 7th, 2016, 10am-12pm at the RMTC

Friday, January 6th, 2017, 10am-12pm at the RMTC

Friday, April 7th, 2017, 10am-12pm at the RMTC

Barry County:

October 2016, date & time to be announced, held at KCC’s Fehsenfeld Center in Hastings

January 2016, date & time to be announced, held at KCC’s Fehsenfeld Center in Hastings

Luncheons and Events

Starting in fall 2016 the LLI will be making some revisions to how lunches and opportunities for members to

socialize are offered. Following is the 2016 - 17 luncheon and event schedule:

September 2016 - Kick-off luncheon with speaker

May 2017 - Annual meeting & luncheon with speaker

In order to make these luncheons as entertaining and educational as possible, the LLI will be working hard to

secure professional speakers for these events through places like the Historical Society of Michigan.

November 2017 - Holiday Social Instead of a winter luncheon, a holiday social will be held in November that includes treats and

entertainment to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

In the past our sometimes severe Michigan winters have impacted the ability of LLI members to travel to

luncheons held between the months of January and March, or even increased the risk of these gatherings

being canceled. To address these challenges the LLI will not host a winter luncheon.

This new luncheon & event schedule will still provide the opportunity for the larger LLI membership to

gather three times per year to socialize over food, educational presentations, and entertainment, but will

focus these activities in months in which it is easier to travel.

NEW! Day and Overnight Trip Partnership with Carolyn Mack Tours!

The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) will now be partnering with Carolyn Mack Tours to provide day and overnight trips for our members. Please note, that while these tours are available to our membership, they are also open to the public and other organizations. Meaning, it will not be solely LLI members on the trip. Nor, will a representative from the College be leading the trips. However, we believe this partnership will allow for more opportunities for our membership to travel than we could provide out of our office. Registration for trips will still happen through the LLI office, the same way it has in the past. Travel insurance is available for purchase through a 3rd party. We invite you to learn more at an open house on August 4, 2016 from 1:00-3:00 pm in the Davidson Center. There will be a presentation from Carolyn Mack at 1:30 pm. Information about upcoming trips will be available, as well as an opportunity for you to get any questions you might have answered. In the future, you can look for a special brochure in the mail with information about all of the upcoming tours.

College’s Lifelong Learning Department that is focused on connecting area youth with

experiences related to athletics, education and careers. Bruin Youth Programming

Bring a Friend! The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) has implemented a NEW

offer to try and reach potential new members and more

widely expose our programs to those 50 and better.

Bring a Friend means that you have the opportunity to bring

a friend (or family member, neighbor, former co-worker…

anyone that is interested!) to one class session with you.

All you have to do is complete the form below with your

friend’s information and give it to the instructor when you

come to class that day.

There are a couple guidelines for Bring a Friend:

1. You must be registered for the class you are bringing a

friend to.

2. This offer is good for one date only. For example, they

may come to the first day of a multi-week class, but not

the entire 6-weeks. However, if they enjoy the class after

the first session, they can always register for the remainder

of the class!

If you have any questions about Bring a Friend, please

contact the LLI Office at 269.965.4134 or email [email protected].
