MUSIC

Wednesday 30th November

1 hour In the 4th bimester C7 students have been learning aspects related to MELODY and TEXTURE through the study of FILM and WORLD MUSIC. Their Listening Exam will ask them to demonstrate their ability to identify a variety of features and characteristics found in excerpts collected amongst those musical categories.

Students will be asked to identify:

Tonalities and Key signatures Chord structures, Chord symbols and Cadences Intervals and Harmonic terms Articulations and Dynamics Time Signatures Melodic development techniques Music technology terms and techniques Textures and Instruments World Music Styles’ characteristics, focusing on Indian Music Some of the questions will refer to previously studied content which is expected to be fairly familiar to the students at this point, mainly related to the three first projects studied this year, as follows.

1st Project: MINIMALISM - motif development techniques such as Repetition, Ostinato, Sequence, Inversion, Retrograde, Diminution and Augmentation; texture, instrumentation and dynamics;

2nd Project: MUSIC FOR DANCE - characteristics of dance forms and styles from Classical music of the Baroque and the 19th Century as well as from Popular music of the 20th and 21st Centuries, such as Gavotte, Sarabande, Minuet, Gigue, Waltz, Polka, Tango, Samba and Salsa;

3rd Project: RHYTHM and METER, Africa to the Americas – theoretical, technical and structural aspects of music learned through the study of African music and of American

styles evolved from that, such as the Spirituals, Blues, Bossa Nova, Reggae and Salsa; concepts related to the musical organization and manipulation of tempo, such as bar, syncopation, rhythm patterns, time signatures, scale, melodic development structures, improvisation, poly, cross and bi-rhythms; typical instruments;

The Music Department recommends students to devote about 70% of their revision time to the study of the 4th bimester’s content and 30% to the former three bimesters’ content.

All students received worksheets and examples or wrote definitions in their notebooks for the subjects studied along the year. Further research may be carried by visiting the following recommended websites.
