IN YOUR
GROUPS, DISCUSS
LOGICAL FALLACIES
(SMG 684)
KNOW THEM FOR TWO REASONS: SEE
THEM IN OTHERS’ ARGUMENTS; DO NOT
USE THEM IN YOUR OWN ARGUMENTS!

• Proposals for solving problems take many forms in our culture.
Formal written proposals are used often in
business, government, and the academic world to present
possible solutions to particular problems, like spiraling costs or
lower-than-expected revenue. Effectively composed formal
proposals exhibit all of the basic features of the proposal
essay discussed in this chapter: a well-defined problem, a
well-argued solution, an effective counterargument, and a
readable plan.
• In this chapter, you will write a proposal for a solution to a
problem that concerns you. As you compose your
proposal, you should consider whether the use of visuals or
multimedia would help your readers more immediately or more
fully grasp your proposed solution.

topic below. Use a minimum of two credible sources to support your
argument. These are in addition to The Hunger Games.
Prompt : Write an essay proposing a solution to a well-defined problem
faced by a community or group to which you may belong.
Alternatively, you may address a well-defined problem faced by one of
the districts or communities in The Hunger Games. Address your
proposal to your audience: one or more members of the group, its
leadership, or to outsiders who may be able to contribute to solving the
problem.
