We’ll actively encourage you to develop a long-term career with us – progressing to become a team leader or area manager when you are ready.

FIRM FOUNDATIONS FOR YOUR ELECTRICAL CAREEROur apprenticeship places are always in high demand. That’s because our award-winning training is the first step on the ladder to a successful long-term career.

We wire one in ten of all new homes for all the major house builders so we’re looking at a bright future, especially with government targets to see a million new homes built in England by 2020.

As one of our apprentices you’ll be working as part of a dedicated team of specialists installing all things electrical in new homes. From initial cabling and sockets, through to intricate lighting systems, data points and heating and ventilation systems, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you’re helping to create much-needed family homes for future generations.

Much of the work you’ll be undertaking will involve using a range of power and hand tools with skill and precision. You’ll need to be driven to produce quality work, first time, every time.

As well as being highly practical our electricians are first-class communicators, liaising with other trades on site such as plumbers and plasterers, as well as having daily contact with the site manager.

WHERE CAN AN APPRENTICESHIP WITH USTAKE YOU?The opportunities are endless at Clarkson Evans - in fact we’d go so far to say the sky’s the limit. We are passionate about developing home-grown talent, and are proud of how our former apprentices have progressed within the company.

We offer a number of career options when you are qualified. You may wish to relocate to another branch and experience life living in another part of the country. We’ll support you in this goal and offer

generous relocation packages for the right people.Alternatively after a few years “on the tools” you may decide to use your experience gained out on site as part of our commercial team, working as a quantity surveyor or commercial manager. These roles involve liaising with our customers, responding to tender requests and estimating the resources required to wire a development of new homes.

Once qualified, the majority of our apprentices stay with the company - more than 70% of our team leaders and managers trained with us.

WHAT SORT OF REWARDS ARE ON OFFER?

Our more experienced team leaders expect to earn around £750 per week and weekly pay packets of around £1,000 or more are not unusual.

We offer a competitive rate of pay for apprentices. You’ll be earning while you learn and on offer are the rewards of long-term financial security and the esteem that comes with mastering a highly regarded trade.

Did you know that electricians typically earn significantly above the national average wage? That’s just for starters. At Clarkson Evans there is also a bonus scheme in place for our electrical teams, so the harder you work, the more you’re rewarded.

CHRIS PIKEFORMER APPRENTICE, NOW GLOUCESTER AREA MANAGER

“Ten years after leaving sixth form straight after I’d completed my A-levels, I’ve worked my way through the ranks to become an area manager at our Gloucester branch.

“More than 70% of the company’s managers and team leaders started at the company as apprentices – just like me.

“I had always planned to do an apprenticeship but I chose to do A-levels because all my friends did. I was a high performer academically but studying for the sake of studying never lit that spark in me. I have always been a practical person so I knew that the apprenticeship route was the way to go.

“As an apprentice, I remember it being pretty tough getting used to the long, busy days and then going home and studying to complete the qualification. It was all worth it though. I never thought I’d be one of the company’s area managers at 27 years old!

“It just shows that there is no glass ceiling if you decide to do an apprenticeship. I definitely want to keep pushing forward and the next step for me would be to become a Regional Production Manager.

“The role I’m in now is rewarding because I get to help those who were in my position. Seeing my apprentices become highly regarded, successful team leaders makes it all worthwhile. This is one of the reasons why I wouldn’t turn back the clock and go to university instead.”

“More than 70% of the company’s managers and team leaders started at the company as apprentices – just like me.”

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?A good academic standard, normally GCSE (grade C/grade 5 or above) in English, maths and science, is a given.

In addition we’re looking for grafters – people who are happy to arrive at 7am or earlier each morning and who are not put off by the physical demands of the job. There’s plenty of lifting and carrying involved and you’ll be expected to pull your weight.

You will need a full driving licence before you start work with us so we’ll expect to see in your application form that you are at least learning to drive.

Organisation is key to a successful career at Clarkson Evans and you’ll need to prove to us that you can work full-time but still manage to meet deadlines for handing in college work.

FREQUENTLY

ASKED QUESTIONS

How much do apprentices get paid?

Basic pay for first year apprentices is £150 per

week but thanks to our bonus scheme, annual

pay during the first year averages £11,830.

For anyone who joins us having already

completed the City & Guilds 2365 Level 3 or

the full 2330 Levels 2 & 3 (or equivalent) we

offer basic pay of £180 per week. For those with

these qualifications and significant on-the-job

experience we may be able to offer an even

higher basic rate.

In the second year basic pay increases to £214

Please note though that bonus payments

are not guaranteed and will vary significantly

according to seasonal workloads and your team’s

productivity.

Is there an age restriction for applicants?Applicants must be over 18 to begin an apprenticeship with us. Unfortunately we are unable to employ 16 and 17 year olds due to the health and safety restrictions imposed on building sites. LISTEN UP PARENTS

TALENTED ELECTRICIANS ARE ALWAYS IN DEMAND

As the parent of a young person thinking about their future career you’re probably acutely aware of the sky-rocketing cost of a university education.

Tuition fees alone typically cost around £9,000 a year and, despite that investment, there’s no guarantee of a job after graduation.

Our apprenticeships offer a great alternative, with bags of opportunity for long-term career progression and a chance to earn money from day one.

The insatiable demand for new homes in the UK does not look likely to slow down for years to come – which is great news for us. As specialists in wiring new homes, our order book is booming.

The future is bright for our electricians – who typically earn around £35,000 - £40,000 a year.

Due to the size of our business we give our newly qualified electricians the opportunity to relocate to other branches to experience life in another part of the country. Relocation can offer a fast-track to promotion, but perhaps, more importantly, provide young people with the opportunity to live independently for the first time.

An electrical apprenticeship with us opens the door to

a rewarding lifelong career, including roles in quantity

surveying, area supervision, contract management or

maybe even teaching.

Lots of young people go to university because they don’t know what they want to do. Adam got fantastic A-level results and I was really

pleased when he said he wanted to go down the apprenticeship route.

I was so proud when he qualified as an electrician with Clarkson Evans and I’d urge other parents to let their sons and daughters follow

their dream. Apprenticeship training will help them obtain skills and experience that will stay with them for life.

“I’m not afraid of hard work and know that having a good sense of humour on site goes a long way. My team leader is one of the best and I really enjoy the mix of site-based learning and college work. He trusts me to get on with the job and invests time in my development. I’m happy to repay the faith he has in me by giving 110 per cent each day and pulling my weight.

“My apprenticeship experience has been spot on so far and I’m soaking up all that I’m being taught. I’m not afraid to ask when I don’t understand something and more importantly, my team leader encourages me to do so, to make sure that what I’m learning is correct.

“Even at this stage in my career I can see how lucky I am to have secured my apprenticeship at Clarkson Evans – the company’s reputation is well-known in the industry. I can’t wait for my training to fly by so

that I can be mentoring new starters like me when I become a team leader myself one day.

“I’d love to see more women following in my footsteps. Becoming an electrician at Clarkson Evans is a promising move for anyone looking for a long-term career with great prospects.”

CHELSEY DORANAPPRENTICE ELECTRICIAN, BIRMINGHAM

that I’m being taught.”

“I’d always dreamt of becoming a professional football player. I thought I’d got it made when Bournemouth FC offered me a five year contract. When they released me at the age of nineteen I had to reassess my long-term career plans.

“My dad was a hugely positive influence on me and he encouraged me to look into an electrical apprenticeship. He cut out an advert for an apprentice electrician role at Clarkson Evans which he found in our local newspaper and encouraged me to apply.

“I’m more than a year into my apprenticeship and loving every minute of it. I get on really well with my team leader; in fact we are planning to go on holiday together!”

“The biggest challenge of my apprenticeship so far has been the ‘Christmas rush’ when things get especially busy on site. The hours are long and the

weather is cold, but the camaraderie with the other trades makes the days go quicker.

“You get a huge amount of satisfaction when you can use your problem-solving and technical skills to wire a new home working alongside your colleagues.

“I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people, gaining a huge range of practical skills and challenging myself on a daily basis.

“I know I’ve picked a new role with huge potential for long-term career progression. When I qualify I want to move through the ranks to take on more responsibility, just like my team leader, who is a former apprentice.”

Our apprentices come from a variety of backgrounds – some of them join us

straight after A-levels or after completing an electrical course at college. Some of our best apprentices have had a period of working in a variety of roles before

realising they needed a career with better prospects and financial security.
