He gained notoriety in 1991 by painting a Soviet tank pink, to serve as a war memorial in central Prague. As the Monument to Soviet tank crews was still a

national cultural monument at that time, his act of civil disobedience was considered "hooliganism" and he was briefly arrested.

David Černý (born December 15, 1967) is a Czech sculptor. His works can be seen in many locations in Prague.

In Man Hanging Out (1996), Černý depicts psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud suspended by one hand from a pole high above the ground. Freud was born in Freiburg, now part of the Moravian region of the Czech Republic. Freud is credited with having completed his most creative work in his 40’s, when he was suffering from psychosomatic illnesses and a number of phobias including the exaggerated fear of dying. At the age of 83 and suffering from mouth cancer, Freud called upon his personal doctor and his long-time friend Max Schur to assist in his suicide by helping to administer doses of morphine.

Černý created the piece in response to the question of what role the intellectual would play in the new millennium, as Freud was, in Černý’s words, “the founder of psychoanalysis – the intellectual face of the 20th century”. Like his other works, Man Hanging Out starts as a surprise to ordinary sensibilities, then intimates the artist’s frustration with the way things are (or were) and, for those in tune with the message, insinuates the personal questioning of the status quo. Man Hanging Out is a fine example of the reason why Černý is considered a leading sculptor and a pop-culture icon.

HorseEvery visitor to Prague knows the statue of St.

Wenceslas on the horse, guarding the huge square named after the Saint. In the middle of

that very square, inside of the Lucerna passage, is another sculpture of St. Wenceslas on the

horse but this time the animal is dead. Originally this piece was supposed to be located inside of the main post office building but eventually the

chief of the post office said it was too much (without specifying what exactly “too much” is)

and a new location had to be found. Cerny hardly ever comments on the meaning of his

work but it is believed that the dead horse is an allusion to a former Czech president Vaclav

Klaus

“Horse” represents Wenceslas (or Václav) sitting on the belly of his dead, upside-down

horse. The sculpture hangs in the atrium of an art nouveau shopping arcade that runs below

the Lucerna Palace off Wenceslas Square between Štěpánská and Vodičkova streets.

Compare Černý’s “Horse” to the statue of the Good King Wenceslas just outside in

Wenceslas Square.

exhibition, opened in the Chicago Museum of Modern Art. Later on it traveled with the art exhibit across the United States (Philadelphia ICA, Oberlin College, Ohio Joslyn Memorial ) for over two years (1995-1997). Then, once

again, the sculpture was to be seen at a 1997 Kyjev exhibition (the Ukraine). iN 1999 was

this piece casted into fiberglass and exhibited as part of the show on the bilding of Czech

ambassy in London.

A little bonus away from Prague. Liberec is one of the biggest Czech cities located in north-west part of the country. Before the Second World War the city was mostly German who in 1938 expelled all the Czechs, 7 years later the roles turned around. Not long ago the city ordered a bus stop from David Cerny but instead he created a table with all dark aspects of Liberec’s history on it: an overthrown menorah, Czech and German beer mugs or the head of Konrad Henlein (an infamous local Nazi politician) with a fork stick into it. The bus stop is located just behind the town hall in Liberec.

Pissing manAt the courtyard of Kafka Museum two guys are pissing into the tank that has a shape of Czech Republic. They are not standing still but moving their hips so they write with their pee quotes by famous residents of Prague. If you want your sentence being written on Czech Republic just text it to the number written next to the statue and the mannequins will piss it too! The story behind the sculpture is simple – it shows what Cerny thought of Czech Republic joining European Union!

His Entropa, created to mark the Czech presidency of the European Union Council during the first half

of 2009, attracted controversy both for its stereotyped depictions of the various EU member

states, and because it turned out to have been created by Černý and two friends rather than, as promised, being a collaboration between artists

from each of the member states. Some EU members states reacted negatively to the

depiction of their country. For instance, Bulgaria decided to summon the Czech Ambassador to Sofia in order to discuss the illustration of the Balkan country as a collection of squat toilets.

It’s quite a journey to get to Galeria Futura in Smichov but it’s well worth the time and effort as probably the most spectacular of Cerny’s sculpture is located there! Two big figures are leaning towards the wall, with ladders leading to their asses. Once you climb there you can watch a movie of former Czech president Vaclav Klaus and the head of National Gallery feeding each other with a spoon. It is said the sculpture is a metaphor of Czech politics but I think it refers to just about every country.

London Booster is an art installation by Czech artist David Černý. It's a bus fitted with hydraulic arms, allowing it to do push ups, accompanied by audio-visual effects. It was created to celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympics and inspire the Czech Republic Olympic team. It was installed outside the Business Design Centre in Islington, which for the duration of the games was

transformed into 'Czech House .'Past the Olympics, the bus is publicly located in Prague-Chodov in front of the building of Agrofert company of Andrej Babiš which was a sponsor of the work (next to

the bus stop Benkova) .The bus itself is a 1958 Bristol Lodekka LD double-decker with ECW bodywork. Despite being painted red, it never saw use as a London bus - it was new to the Isle of Wight based operator Southern Vectis, numbered 555, and painted in their green livery. After 20 years service it was sold to a dealer who exported it to a museum in Holland. In the 1990s it was sold to a private operator, who returned it to use in Holland as a red liveried corporate hospitality vehicle, registered BE-27-64. Černý sourced it in December 2011 from a Dutch dealer.

A Czech artist known for his anti-communist stance has floated a huge statue of a hand making an obscene

gesture on Prague's main river.David Cerny's none-too-subtle artwork

was paraded days before parliamentary elections that could give the

Communists a taste of power almost a quarter-century after they were ousted.

The artist's giant purple hand, extending an oversized middle finger,

was placed on a pontoon on the Vltava river, near the famed Charles Bridge and facing Prague Castle, the seat of

the presidency.

Quo Vadis (1990)The number 20 tram at Malostrana will take you to this next sculpture in the gardens of the German Embassy on Vlasska street. In honor of the 4,000 East German asylum seekers who drove to the embassy in their Trabant cars (an old Communist car) and refused to leave until West Germany granted them asylum, Cerny has constructed a fiber glass Trabant car standing on four giant human legs.

The steel constuction of the stepping Golem has been designed by the Czech artist David Cerny. His many projects in Prague have proven to be very popular with tourists to that city.

Cerny’s fame comes, to a large degree, from his “shocking” ideas. In the past, his creations have included a statue of St.Wenceslas riding a dead horse and several peeing statues where the subjects of his statutes pee into a swimming pool shaped like a map of the Czech Republic.

However, Poznań does not expect any similar controversy, but rather an appropriate commemoration of the common Jewish heritage of Prague and Poznań. The so-called Golem's creator, the famous Rabbi Bezalel, is associated with these both cities.

In comparison with his other works, Metalmorphosis, a mirrored sculpture housed in the Whitehall Technology Park in Charlotte, North Carolina, is tame and seemingly apolitical. The creation consists of nearly 40 steel pieces grouped into 7 segments which independently rotate 360-degrees, and the mouth spits water into a huge pool in which it sits. When the segments are aligned, the sculpture appears to be a giant, silver head complete

with the usual fixtures in their regular places .When the motorized, internet-controlled segments are rotating, the result is an oddly mesmerizing perpetually moving showpiece which alternately looks like a human head--with disturbing, gaping holes where the mouth or eyes should be--or, alternately, like nothing replicated in the physical world. The reflecting pool beneath the sculpture creates an even more muddled reflection.

Perhaps drawing on the quickly-shifting and revolving literary universe of fellow Czech artist, Franz Kafka, Černý notes the Metalmorphosis as something of a self-portrait of his own psyche. Maybe. Part of Černý's rebellious artistic temperament includes creating a falsified biography of himself for the media. Whether or not it's absolutely true, regarding the piece, Černý said," This is

how I feel; it is a mental self-portrait ”.

In Utero, (stainless steel, 6 m), Prague 2013

David Cerny's In Utero in Prague. Its multi-faceted exterior catches and reflects the lights

from the lampposts and the headlights of the passing cars.It caught your eye. It startled us. It reeled us in. And, it

made us chuckle. All at the same time. The sculpture, titled In Utero, is a work by Czech artist

David Černý. Little did we know that it isn’t the only witty, quirky and often controversial mark Černý has left along

the streets of his hometown.Rather, it is one of dozen or so pieces of public art the artist that have added to and shaped the personality of Prague –

and sparked curiosity and controversy around the world

“Guns” by David Černý at the Artbanka Museum of Young Art in Prague, Czech Republic (Nov. 2011).David Černý’s “Guns” are suspended by wires in the courtyard of the former Artbanka Museum of Young Art.

Aimed at each other, these giant pistols depict a balance of terror: Whoever shoots also gets shot, hence he might not fire – something like an atomic cold war. It could be argued that the installation serves as an ad for the

gunmaker, a sort of provocation. Every now and then, the sound of the trigger being pulled and the sound of a shot ring out.
