SPOTLIGHT
Dear cherished congregants and friends,
This month I am concluding my 23rd year serving Adath Jeshurun Congregation. I
cannot imagine a more stimulating, warm and open place in which to serve in the
sacred role of the klay kodesh - clergy of a congregation. The rabbis, educators
and professionals I have worked with over the years brought to Adath love of
Judaism, learning, strong values and a striving for excellence. I have much gratitude
to all of the professionals and support staff who made coming to work every day
a joy and a privilege. Through the years I worked with wonderful lay leaders
whose labor of love provided dedicated service to the task of building this
congregation. Together we have dedicated a new building, enjoyed great TAMID events on our
bima and welcomed Bnai Emet into our Adath family. I have been privileged to work with wonderful
young people and have witnessed Gan students grow into young adults; b’nai mitzvah students
marry and have children of their own; and pillars of our community pass their wisdom and legacy on
to the next generation. I have enjoyed close relationships with my students and their families as well
as the privilege of celebrating joyous occasions with you, and supporting you in times of hardship
and sorrow. When we celebrated our family simchas you were there to share in our joy and make
each occasion that much sweeter and equally have supported us in times of loss.
This is, and always will be, our community. I am honored by the Adath Board of Trustees' appoint-
ment as Cantor Emeritus and the continued relationship with Adath that it represents. In addition I
am thrilled that Adath has supported a wonderful project to preserve and share the musical legacy
of my time at Adath. The choir and I just recorded a professionally produced CD highlighting many
special pieces and favorites of our congregation. The CD will be available in the office for free to
every household at Adath once it is finished. Watch for an announcement in late June. I hope to see
you all for the farewell event that Adath is planning on Tuesday evening, June 20th. It will be a
wonderful chance to reflect on a 23-year relationship.
Marcy and I will dearly miss all of our wonderful friends in Minnesota but we are excited to share
with you some details of our next adventure. Beginning in July, we will move to Manchester,
Vermont as I will be assuming the position of the sole clergy and spiritual leader of Israel
Congregation of Manchester. Israel Congregation is a 150-family liberal, unaffiliated congregation
with a long history in the beautiful mountains of Vermont. Marcy will be continuing her work as a
psychotherapist as she has been asked to join a highly regarded local private practice. We look
forward to the opportunity to bring our life and work experience to a wonderful small resort town
and to be part of this special intimate community. Now that we will be living in this beautiful
outdoor wonderland we expect many of our friends and family to visit and plan to have extra room
to accommodate guests. Don’t be shy if you will be anywhere nearby and please give as a ring and
stop by! One of the great joys of this move is that our oldest daughter, Heather and her fiancée
Sean have just moved to Vermont as well! We anticipate a wedding soon in Vermont followed by
grandchildren (no pressure, Heather!) It was our hope to be close to family and we are grateful
that all the pieces of this grand plan have fallen into place.
We wish all of you the continued joy of a warm, caring and vibrant community that Adath Jeshurun
has always been.
Blessings,
Cantor Scott and Marcy Buckner

WORD FROM OUR BOARD
Get Social!
June’s Budget Blossomed!
This is a great time of year. The grass is green, the trees are budding
and our budget committee finished working on our next year’s fiscal
operating budget.
I had the privilege of leading Adath’s highly talented team of
volunteers as we reviewed the various department budgets. Our
objective was to present a balanced operating budget to our board,
ensuring continued financial security and stability. This is a
challenging task. While all our programs have value and strive to
meet our mission, congregational needs and desires often outpace available funding.
This creates an environment where difficult decisions must be made. We thoroughly
vet and analyze our operating costs to eliminate waste. We invest our dollars wisely so
we can continue to provide our members and the community at large, with world class
leadership and programming.
Our funds are raised primarily through dues, L’Chaim, program service fees and fund
raising events.
To help you understand the scope and magnitude of our operating budget, I thought I
would share a few specifics:
It costs approximately $525,000 a year to simply maintain our beautiful building,
between utilities and basic services/maintenance.
The synagogue has 35 full-time employees and 52 part-time employees including
educators, maintenance workers, catering, office/admin, and clergy. In addition, we
enlist the help of dozens of volunteers who donate literally thousands of hours of
their time to help operate our synagogue.
The total cost to operate the synagogue, exclusive of our preschool, is approxi-
mately $3.1 million.
Our Foundation contributes the majority of its annual income to defray a portion of
our operating costs. In the past several years, this has reduced the operating costs
required to be covered by other fundraising by approximately $350,000, leaving
approximately $2.75 million of costs to be shared amongst our congregants.
We have approximately 1,250 member families to whom this cost is spread,
meaning the average support needed from each member family to balance our
budget is around $2,200.
I share this with you so that everyone has a greater sense of the financial realities of
operating our synagogue. I sincerely hope each of you will keep this in mind when you
evaluate your willingness and ability to support Adath during the upcoming year.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]
or contact Bernie Goldblatt in the synagogue office.

Our youth are looking forward to beginning their summer
adventure! I am thrilled for them as they head out to summer
camps, summer jobs and family gatherings. In addition, over 20 of
our Adath teens are traveling to Israel - an opportunity of a life-
time! I wish them all a N’siya Tova – a safe and wonderful trip. I
look forward to hearing about their experiences and incorporat-
ing their knowledge of Israel in our future programming.
Here are some pictures from a few of our year-end events. I am
especially proud of our community outreach. In April, Jake
Klaiman led our teens in calling and writing notes to thank our
Adath congregants for their L’Chaim Campaign donations. A few
weeks later one of our Rosh Hodesh girls groups helped at the
PJ Library program at the Children’s Hospital.

GAN SHELANU NEWS
Art View
Two vibrant felt wall hangings on display in Adath’s Kitsis Foyer
are internationally renowned
works by the late Israeli artist,
Kopel Gurwin. He crafted
“Naphtali” and “Yehuda,” in
jewel tones to depict the biblical
tribes symbolized by a ram and
a lion. Curvilinear forms in the
lion’s tail, the ram’s horns, and
leaf and stem motifs lead the
eye around the compositions.
Careful observation reveals
hand-stitchery, dotted patterns
and royal colors of deep blue
and purple.
Kopel Gurwin was born in 1923 and raised in Vilna, the capital
of Lithuania. As a teen, Kopel helped his parents with the home
finances by working in a suit workshop; there he first encoun-
tered the art of sewing.
During World War II and the
German invasion of Vilna, Gurwin
lost his parents and 12-year-old
sister Chava. Kopel and his
brother Moshe were arrested, but
were saved by Kopel's drama
teacher, who hid them. But they
were later caught and imprisoned
until the end of the war. In 1946,
Kopel and Moshe sailed to
Sweden, which took in ill
survivors for rehabilitation.
In 1950 Kopel and Moshe
made aliyah to Israel where Kopel worked as a surveyor and
military draftsman. He won a first prize for his design of the
cover of the Communication Corps bulletin. With his army
discharge at age 29, he started studying drawing and graphics at
Jerusalem’s Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. In the 1950s
and 1960s, Gurwin won many awards for poster designs and
became sought after for commemorative government projects.
Kopel moved to Tel Aviv and was hired by Grundman's graphics
studio. During his time at Grundman's, he discovered the fibrous
felt from which he produced most of his wall hangings. At the
1964 Levant Fair exhibition he used felt fixed to wooden panels
for the first time.
Each wall hanging was constructed of three elements: the main
motif/story, the decoration (ornamentation) and the Hebrew
text which usually framed the work. The lettering was designed
in a square font contrary to the accepted biblical calligraphy.
Gurwin has had many solo exhibitions throughout the world.
Kopel Gurwin passed away at the age of 67 in 1990 from heart

Notes from the President
“Home is not where your live, but where they understand you”
Christian Morgenstern
What better place to call home than the
Adath Jeshurun Women’s League. This is a
group of women who understand the needs
of our synagogue and community and work
together to meet those needs, whether it is
giving financial support or volunteer hours.
My personal thanks to those who have served on the Women’s
League board and will be continuing to meet the challenges that
make this such a vibrant organization. This has been another
successful term that will be evidenced when we receive the
Jewels in the Crown award in July at International Convention.
Another thank you to our membership and congregants – your
generosity and support were instrumental in making this year
successful.
And finally, a huge THANK YOU to all of the staff personnel for
the time and energy you gave us helping with mailings, menus
and flyers.
Adath Jeshurun Women’s League is entering its 100th year. Keep
that in mind when you receive your membership renewal form.
We hope you will join us as we take BOLD NEW STEPS
towards the next century.
Shalom,
Ruth Harris, President

chosen a book for June. However, we will
continue to meet and discuss a “book of the
month” throughout the summer.

and discuss the book. We will continue to
meet at the Perkins on 394 & Louisiana.
For additional information contact Laureen Phillips at

Do you know of someone having a special event such as an
anniversary, birthday or other simchas? Why not commemorate
the event with a card that supports the Jewish Theological
Seminary with scholarships for students. The entire donation of
1/$5 or 3/$12 goes towards this project.
Contact Miriam Kieffer, Torah Fund VP at 763.557.9654 and
she will send the cards for you.
Car Wash Passes
Did you know that by buying a Mister Car
Wash Pass from Women’s League that you
are also supporting the Gan and other youth
programs at Adath? It’s true – “Mister”
returns a portion of the car wash cost to
the Adath Women’s League - we have
earmarked these funds to our youth programs. Express washes
are $7 – Full service washes are $18. Passes are good at any
Mister Car Wash and do not expire!
Contact Bobby Nemer at 952.938.8941 and she will be happy
to send you as many passes as you would like.

INCLUSION = ACCESSIBILITY
Adath Jeshurun welcomes and supports children and adults
with disabilities and their families. We make every effort to
ensure that our programs, equipment and facilities are accessible
to all. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the chair
of Adath’s Inclusion Committee: Etta Barry, 612.889.2766.
One area the Inclusion Committee focuses on is making sure
there are allergy-free sweets available for each Kiddush. If you
are interested in helping provide allergy-free treats for those
with special dietary needs, by baking or buying, please contact
Miriam Kieffer at 763.557.9654 or miriam@kieffermail.
To leave a private, confidential message for Elaine
Savick, Adath Jeshurun Congregational Nurse,
call 952.215.3936 or send an e-mail to [email protected].
The Congregational Nurse program is sponsored
by an anonymous Adath member.
Adath’s Outreach Caring Community: Yad Sima Tova, has a
limited number of volunteers available to provide transportation
to Adath members to services, minyan or Adath functions.
To make arrangements at least five
(5) days in advance,
call the Transportation Hotline at 952.215.3937.
CONGREGATIONAL NURSE NEWS From Nurse Elaine Savick
My work brings me in contact with many
congregants who have sustained life changing
injuries following falls both at home and in the
community. Many of these folks are able to
eventually return to their normal routine
after time in the hospital and possibly a
rehabilitation center.
Others will need to move to assisted living or long term care
facilities to receive the care they need if there are not resources
to provide additional care at home.
Falls can happen in spite of our best efforts, so it is good to have
a plan for getting help if you do fall. Carry your charged cell
phone with you at home and away. Keep it in reach when in the
shower or tub. There are a lot of jokes about Medical Alert
devices—but they are proven to save lives. Newer models
even have a GPS function for falls away from home.
Blood Drive
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Memorial Blood
Center blood drive April 17. A total of sixteen people
participated, including 2 first time donors. These donations are
already helping patients in need. Thank you for making a
life-saving difference!
Adath’s next blood drive is scheduled on Sunday, April 23, 2018,
so mark your calendar!
Many adults are able to donate every 56 days. Please consider
becoming a regular donor at the MBC’s center in Plymouth or
other locations in the area.
Summer Safety Tips
Now that summer has finally arrived, here are a few reminders
to increase your summer fun and minimize health problems
during warmer weather:
Young children and seniors are especially vulnerable to
heat-related issues. Check on them frequently to ensure
their health and safety.
Keep hydrated. It is important to drink enough fluids during
hot weather, especially before and during physical activity, to
prevent potential organ damage related to electrolyte imbal-
ances. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages may contribute to
fluid loss. You should drink enough fluids so you need to
urinate every 2-3 hours when being active in hot weather.
Protect your skin from sun damage. Use sun screen
generously, wear a hat, and cover up if you must be outside
during the most intense part of the day (10AM-3PM). Over
exposure to the sun can cause skin cancers including
Melanomas, as well as other skin damage
Enjoy the outdoors, but think safe! Wear a helmet when
biking, PFDs when boating, etc.
Be aware of potential weather changes. Review your plan
for severe storms with your family.
Have a safe and happy summer.

Jewish Summer Camp is Part of
Jan’s Past, Present and Future
Where Jan Frisch grew up, BBYO met twice a year. That’s a long time
between planning a mixer and actually asking the boy. But growing up in
Devils Lake, North Dakota, with just a couple other Jewish families
meant that Jan had to travel a long way to take part in Jewish activities.
She remembers taking the train to Minneapolis for B’nai B’rith conven-
tions and attending first Council Camp, then Herzl Camp the following
year. “I didn’t know anyone,” Jan says, “but after spending three
wonderful weeks together, I’d made friends and I felt like I was part of
a Jewish community.”
After college and graduate school, Jan
moved to the Twin Cities where she
married and started a family. Eventually
her kids—two sons and a daughter—
went off to Jewish summer camp. At
Camp Ramah in Wisconsin they made
lifelong Jewish friends. “When my
daughter went to Illinois for college she
rediscovered lots of camp friends
there. It was a wonderful reunion and
gave her a group of built-in buddies
from day one.” Jan continues, “It’s
those formative experiences that
shape lives.”
Studies agree with Jan. The long-term impact of Jewish overnight camp
and also youth trips to Israel has been well-documented, proving Jewish
teens who’ve had these experiences are more Jewishly engaged as adults.
Jan has done many varied volunteer jobs at Adath, but because of the
lifelong, positive impact Jewish summer camp had on Jan and her kids,
she’s chosen to give the bulk of her time, since 2005, to serving as chair
of the Scholarship Committee. “I want all Adath families to be able to
send their children to Jewish camp or on youth trips to Israel.”
All Adath youth who participate in SMP
(Shabbat Morning Program) receive
some money toward their camp and
Israel programs as an acknowledgement
of their involvement in Jewish education
at Adath. Funds also go to families who
otherwise would find camp or the trips
out of financial reach. “Every year the
cost of these experiences increases.
There is always more need than funds
available,” Jan explains.
Beyond giving her time, Jan has made a permanent gift to Adath Jeshurun
Foundation in her estate plans, The Jan Frisch Scholarship Fund,
which will provide scholarships to children in the Adath community to
attend Jewish programs in Israel and Jewish summer camps.
If you would like to help, please donate to a current Adath fund or
consider making a permanent gift to Adath Jeshurun Foundation.
You may contact Judy Gaviser, Adath Foundation President at
[email protected] or Evan Stern, Development Director, at
[email protected] or 952.215.3916.

DATED MATERIAL printed on recycled paper
The mission of Adath Jeshurun Congregation, a member of the Conservative Movement, is to be a progressive, egalitarian and sacred
community dedicated to Torah (learning and tradition), Avodah (prayer and spirituality) and Gemilut Hasadim (acts of loving kindness).
The This Is Hunger Experience
This Is Hunger, a powerful community engagement
program touring the country, challenges beliefs about
who in America struggles with hunger and why, and empowers participants to take action.
This Is Hunger is a high-impact, experiential installation
on wheels—literally, it’s a big rig. When the 53-foot-long
double expandable trailer is parked and open on both
sides it provides nearly 1,000 square feet of interior space
to take participants on a journey to understand
the stark reality of hunger in America.
The exhibition will be in Minneapolis June 27-30
in the Adath Jeshurun Congregation parking lot,
10500 Hillside Lane West, Minnetonka, MN 55305
