Summer Camps

The Club Summer Camps will run in July and August. Packed with activities that include football and hurling skills, mini leagues, obstacle courses and fun games, this year is shaping up to be even better than previous years.

Week 1: 14th-18th July

Week 2: 5th-8th August

Week 3: 11th-15th August [Cúl Camp]

Times: 10.00-14.30hrs each day (14.00 last day)

Juniors top the league table Our Junior footballers had a good win over Raheny to go clear at the top of their league. With difficult conditions and some poor finishing, the first half was a closely contested affair and Clanns were just two points to the good as the half finished. Player/Manager Collie Reynolds’s half-time pep-talk seemed to have the desired effect and, within three minutes of the resumption, Austin Dodd tore through the Raheny defence and planted a right-foot shot to the top corner of the net. This set the tone for the remainder of the game as the team tagged on a further 2–2 to Raheny’s 0–1. With goals from Ross Maher and Dean Tilley, and some excellent point taking from Shane Nolan aided by Donal McLoughlin, Michael Purcell, Brian O’Mahony and Dean Gannon, our forwards were on top to the end. Mid-field of Bob Allright and Austin Dodd were superb and in defence, despite the score line, James Boylan had a busy time in goals but coped well in the very poor conditions; he was ably assisted by Sean Rimmer, Simon Dolphin, Martin Neville, Bernard Lawless and Anto Quinlan while Aaron Montgomery cleaned up a lot of loose ball around the park. Bright end to season for U-12 hurlers A trip to Enniscorthy to take on Rapparees in a few friendly matches followed by a visit to the activity centre in Clara Laragh on the way home is how our U-12 hurling squad brought their season to a close.

With the assistance of our host organisers – Pat Tobin, Ger McVeigh and John Browne TD – the two games provided a challenging and sometimes physical encounter for the Clanns lads, but nothing with which they

couldn’t cope. In the end, the B team ended their season on a high note by winning a very tight game, while the A team had to settle for a loss but with plenty of lessons picked up in the process. Rapparees club members made everyone feel very welcome, providing plenty of snacks after the games. And they were very impressed by the Clanns coaches, Pat Duffy and Conor Crowley, and could scarcely believe that Pat hails from the hurling bastion of Roscommon! The squad bids farewell to Tadgh, who moves to the US for a period of some months. But, as one of the team mentors put it, a berth will be open for him upon his return.

U-13s defeat leaders Skerries The U-13 boys’ summer renaissance continued with a hard fought win over league leaders, Skerries, in an end-to-end thriller. Skerries had beaten our boys well in the Ballast Pit in the first league match and the turnaround showed the improvement in our skills and teamwork. The match was notable for a superb performance by Chris Cosgrave who scored 6-4. However, it was no solo effort as the entire team ran and worked and harried a fine physical Skerries team. On a perfect pitch in Sean Moore Park the rain threatened but never turned up. Chris Cosgrave, however, did turn up! Both teams started well with Skerries threatening. They built up a 1-2 to 0-1 lead with Chris Cosgrave getting the point. Then he began to motor into gear and proceeded to score 4-3 alone from centre forward to give Clanns a three-point lead before Alexis Sokora added a further point. The first half see-sawed and, while the visitors were unable to deal with Chris, they kept chipping away at the scoreboard. In the last 10 minutes of the half they came back and ended up leading by 4-7 to 4-4 at the break. The forwards worked hard to create space for Cosgrave's rampaging runs. One goal came from a penalty when Theo Scollard (1-2) was hauled down while clear on goal after a great run. In addition, the midfield and backs were put to the pin of their collars to contain a classy Skerries attack.

Just three points down and the wind behind them the boys took to the field for the second half with confidence. Conor Mesa (1-0) scored his debut goal after neatly netting a rebound. Two further goals and a point from Chris Cosgrave gave the lads a five point lead but they couldn't shake off their opponents. One of the goals resulted from a penalty after

another fine run by Conor Mesa led to him being taken out by the keeper. Christopher Cosgrave had run himself into the ground but the other forwards stepped up. Theo Scollard picked off a goal and two points and Cian Morgan (1-0) netted the goal of the match after a perfect hand-passing movement. Still Skerries kept coming and were never more than five points adrift. Clanns found themselves under massive pressure, relying on counter-attacking to keep ahead. Louis Clarke made a great save and, despite a valiant defence all round, Skerries picked off points and a goal which brought them level with a few minutes to play. Lesser teams might have buckled but Chris Cosgrave led one last foray up the field and Stephen Deering (1-0) netted a decisive goal. Skerries pressed again but, with all hands on deck and committed defending from the boys, were restricted to a single point resulting in two point victory for Clanns. The effort put in by the boys was massive and they were exhausted at the end. Alexis Sokora and Rory Tobin were fantastic against a strong Skerries midfield. Colm Kirby O'Briain added his bullocking presence there in the second half to great effect. David Walsh, Niall Madill, Karl Morgan worked tirelessly in defence and Seamus McCann and Zak Harrison covered massive ground at halfback. Up front Jeffrey Woods, Cian O'Donoghue and Ross Hanley were full of running. This was another great performance from the team despite being without a few players. The U-12 boys again made a big contribution. The result again shows that there is nothing between the teams in Division 1 but that our lads have the talent and commitment to produce big wins. Uí Chonaill Fontenoy lead Division 2

A fine 3-15 to 2-12 win over Ballinteer St Johns has put the merged U-15 Uí Chonaill/Fontenoy hurlers on top of the Division 2 league and well placed to contest for promotion to Division 1.

Club Fixtures

New Emerging Talent Camp

The Club is organising an Emerging Talent Camp for 12-15 year olds on the 8th, 9th and 10th July, from 10.00-13.00hrs each day. As distinct from the Summer Camps for younger players, this Camp offers our older players the opportunity to further advance their game – with the hope of making a Dublin development squad. Limited to 30 places per code, participants must choose one code (only applies to the boys) – either hurling or football – while girls can register for football. The following Dublin players will be present to provide coaching sessions: Hurling - Ciaran Kilkenny, Ryan O' Dwyer Football - Dean Rock, James McCarthy Ladies Football - Niamh McEvoy, Sorcha Furlong Registration at the Club: Saturday 28th June (10am-1pm), Monday 30th June (6pm-7pm), Wednesday 2nd July (6pm-7pm). Minors beat St Pats to go second in league On a night when our hurlers had an impressive win over Faughs to reach the championship quarter finals and our Junior ladies had a fine win over Judes, our Minors were in action in Palmerstown in their penultimate league game. From the start some tough hits went in from David Meenan, Jack Redmond, Sean O’Connor and Des Óg Markey, but it was Ross Maher’s return of 4–7 that proved the highlight of the evening. Further goals from Harry Wesley, Monty, Austin Dodd and Niall Foley plus points from Niall Lavery (0-3), Dean Tilley (0-3) and Des Og meant that our points difference should be enough to secure a place in the play-offs if we win our last match. U-13 hurlers regroup

A depleted Clanns U-13 team went down badly to a strong Clontarf team in their Division 3 league fixture. Maybe it was the location of Ringsend Park as against Sean Moore Park that in part accounted for a relatively poor performance from our players. Colm O’Keeffe’s best efforts in goal and trojan work by Colm Kirby O’Briain in defence and in midfield weren’t enough to prevent this defeat. Now it’s all about re-grouping ahead of their next fixture in August as Clanns still lie in second position in the league and with every chance of winning promotion. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
