As you may or may not recall from the last newsletter, I moved up to Washington, D.C. (or more specifically, Alexandria, VA), in June. This was my first time living in a location that experiences major sea- sonal changes, and for that I am grate- ful—the changing of the leaves was beautiful, and I also got to see snow the weekend before last! However, I missed Florida terribly. After careful and thorough consideration, I decided to move back to Tallahassee. I bought my first house last weekend and hope to have it completely furnished by the end of January. Even though my schedule didn’t allow me to attend any Florida Games since I moved to DC, I was at least able to attend the 47th Annual Scot- tish Christmas Walk Weekend & Pa- rade in Alexandira, VA during the first weekend of December (my grandmother Gloria “Gogo” Nixon, aunt Mischa Bishop, and cousins Hayes and Amrys were able to fly up and visit that weekend and attend as well). Now that I am living in Florida again, I retract my statement in the Summer 2017 newsletter that we are in need of a newsletter editor. Now that I am officially a Floridian again (thank goodness!), rather than a Vir- ginian, I am more than happy to con- tinue serving as our newsletter editor. As I begin to draft the Summer 2018 newsletter, please be reminded that any and all submissions (pictures, recipes, songs, etc.) received before the deadline will be considered for publication. Congrats again to Gloria Nixon of Monticello, FL, for being the hide & seek winner from our last newsletter! The hidden word was “dhùrachd,” which translates to “wish” in the closing of a letter (see the Letter from the Editor). Inside this newsletter, you will find the Scottish Gaelic word “CINNEADH.” To win our Hide & Seek Contest, be the first person to a) find the word, b) email the Editor at [email protected], and c) inform him of both the word’s location & meaning. Our winner will be mentioned in the next newsletter.

Happy Hunting!

Clan Donald comes from the Gaelic “Clann Dhòmhnail l ,” meaning

“children of Donald.” The surname MacDonald comes from “Mac Dhòmhnaill,” meaning “son of Donald.” This pattern is common amongst many of the Highlands’ surnames.

The battle cry of Clan Donald is the Gaelic “Fraoch Eilean,” which translates to “Heathered Isle.”

Heather is the plant badge of Clan Donald. The emblem on the pin used to attach the plant badge became increasingly ornate. Eventually the pin itself became known as the badge or crest worn pinned to the cap. It is not appropriate for anyone, other than a clan chief, to wear eagle feathers pinned to their cap so it is best you just place a sprig of heather in your cap using your appropriate clan crest.

The clan crest evolved from ant-lers, horns, or a carving of an animal on the top (or crest) of the chief’s helmet. “The cross, crosslet fitchee, gules” is the Scottish Heraldry descrip-tion of the unique cross that is exactly like St. Julian's Cross held by a Right Hand, usual-ly wearing a gauntlet. The belt encircling the crest takes the place of the Gaelic phrase “an cirean ceann cinne-adh” (crest of the clan chief). The “belt” indicates the wearer is a member of the clan symbolized by the chief's crest within the “belt”. The “belted” crest emblem became the pin used to hold a sprig of the plant badge in the clansman's hat.

Armadale Castle, built on the Isle of Skye in the late 18th century, is the clan seat. In 1855, the castle was destroyed by fire but has since been partially restored.

Heathered Isle Heritage

Scotland The Brave Hark when the night is falling Hear! Hear the pipes are calling, Loudly and proudly calling, Down thro' the glen. There where the hills are sleeping, Now feel the blood a-leaping, High as the spirits of the old Highland men. . (Chorus) Towering in gallant fame, Scotland my mountain hame, High may your proud standards gloriously wave, Land of my high endeavour, Land of the shining river, Land of my heart for ever, Scotland the brave. . High in the misty Highlands, Out by the purple islands, Brave are the hearts that beat Beneath Scottish skies. Wild are the winds to meet you, Staunch are the friends that greet you, Kind as the love that shines from fair maidens' eyes. . (Chorus) . Far off in sunlit places, Sad are the Scottish faces, Yearning to feel the kiss Of sweet Scottish rain. Where tropic skies are beaming, Love sets the heart a-dreaming, Longing and dreaming for the homeland again. . (Chorus)
