Artist Statement

I have spent most of my life trying to understand the balance of life and death and the

ways we process grief. This has led me to realize how emotionally destructive the

commercialized death industry is, and how the norms it perpetuates stifles the chance for deeper

connection to those we have lost. In my artistic journey I have learned the importance of

memorialization and celebration of life. Through my art I discuss with the audience how to look

back on our past selves and see how past traumas have influenced our present selves. To

translate this theme to the audience I share my story of loss, personal growth, and rediscovery of

self. This appears in my work as the unification of imagery from my daily life and old photos

from my late father who was a photographer as well. Through utilizing this imagery I am better

equipped to discuss these memories and emotions in an artistic language that feels approachable

and authentic to the viewer, while also coming to terms with my experiences and how they have

shaped my overall sense of self.
