times has beenenormous. TheMona isarevolutionized contemporary portrait
painting. eonardos preliminary drawingsencouraged otherartists tomake
moreand freerstudiesfor their paintingsand stimulated connoisseurs to co l-
lect those drawings. Through the drawings hisMilaneseworksweremade
known to the Florentines. lso, hisreputationand statureasanartist and
thinkerspread to hisfellowartistsand assured for themafreedomofaction
and thought similar to hisown. Onesuch painterwas the young Raphael, who
sketched eonardoswork in progressand adopted the Mona isaformat for
his portraits;it served asa clearmodelfor his Portrait ofMaddalena Do-
ni (c.1506). eonardoeveninfluenced thefashioninwhich artists dressed
theirsubjects. In his Treatiseon Painting, published long after his death, he
wrote that art should avoid thefashion: sfaras possibleavoid the costumes
of yourown day.Costumesofour period should not be depicted unlessit beon
tombstones,so that wemay bespared being laughed at by oursuccessorsfor
themad fashionsofmenand leave beh ind only things that may beadmired for
their dignity and beauty. TheMona isa demonstrates thisaspect of his tre a-
tise perfectly in that a iacondais dressed ina colored shift, loosely pleated
at theneck, instead of the tight clothes that were then popular.
