October 6, 2013 Our White House Our white house is not located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. but rather at 15317 Dacosta Detroit, MI. 48223 and is in the heart of The Bright- moor Community. It once housed The Felcian sisters who taught at St. Christine Catholic Elementary School. In recent years it has evolved into a social service office, meeting the needs of those who live in the community of Brightmoor. In 2009, when St. Christine’s St. Vin- cent de Paul office combined with The Christ King St. Vincent dePaul Conference, services were expanded to include staffing The SVdP office three days a week. Presently we are the only conference in the city of De- troit that is fortunate to have a live person answer the telephone every day. The front desk volunteers gra- ciously accept this task as part of their ministry. Usually six individu- als are seen, in addition to walk in appointments. Two days a week bus tickets are given out to those show- ing a documented need, i.e., medical, school, legal, DHS, or job interviews. Twenty to thirty bus tickets and transfers are given out. SCCS is very grateful to The Daughters of Charity for The Mission & Ministry Grant for $10,000, which allows us to spend $2500.00 per quarter on our bus ticket ministry. Many of the indi- viduals in The Brightmoor commu- nity lack personal transportation and are dependent on public transporta- tion. We are also able to provide fur- niture thanks to the generous dona- tion of many of our parishioners. We are able to store small pieces of furni- ture in the SCCS garage. We are then able to use monies that are do- nated by so many of our parishioners to purchase new beds especially for the children. Our conference re- ceives SVdP store debit cards each quarter that are in increments of $25.00, so we can help individuals purchase clothes or other household items at any of the SVdP thrift stores in Metro Detroit. Each month we receive an extra $50.00 in SVdP debit cards for having the SVdP box located in The Christ the King parking lot. Thanks to all who support this effort. Many other needs are met including assistance with computer applications for medicaid or food stamps. We continue to serve approximately 350 individuals every Tuesday and 225 every Saturday. In addition, nearly 225 grocery bags are given out, each contains approximately 30lbs. of food. Clothing, books any other donations suitable for distri- bution are given to all who pass through our pantry. Presently we are blessed to provide and give away fresh produce daily due the success of our community garden. The garden is located be- hind The Little White House. SCCS is very grateful to Bill and Billie Hickey who have spearheaded this project for the past three years, changing an overgrown plot of weeds and hard clay, to a fabulous garden. Our garden now includes four rain barrels that allows the rain water to be used as opposed to the faucet water at SCCS. This al- lows us to save much money on our water bill at Our White House. Here are some examples of where our needs are: We could use help in assessing the needs of people in the Community of Brightmoor, where SCCS is located. For in- stance, when St Vincent DePaul does a home visit they travel in pairs; they need people to accom- pany them. Computer Monitors are needed to help supervise individu- als and teach them how to log on the computer, access their DHS cases, do a job search, set up e-mail, or create a resume. We also need help in upgrading and maintaining the computer lab. On Mondays we desperately need volunteers in the food pantry to unload trucks of donations and then sort them. Tuesday the food pantry is open where 200 + bags of grocer- ies are given away. Many of our senior citizens are disabled; there- fore on Tuesdays we need volun- teers to help carry groceries to indi- vidual’s cars. Thanks to all who signed up at either The Christian service Or St Christine Table during Festival of Ministries, you will be contacted. Thanks to all who donated to SVdP walk for the Poor, we col- lected $300.00 in honor of Frank Olivero who faithfully partici- pated in this event. Frank contin- ues to struggle with his health, so please keep him in your prayers. Mike McEvoy, Kathy McEvoy and Daniel Albright will walk for Frank this year. CHRIST THE KING Page 3

Q. How long have you been a member of the Daughters of Charity?

A. I grew up in Syracuse, New York and am the 10th of 12 children, 5 boys and 7 girls. My name was Patricia. From an early age, the Daughters of Charity were

a part of our family’s life. I entered the Daughters of Charity in 1958. On receiving the habit I was given the name of Sister Vincent Louise.

Q. What brought you to St. Christine Christian Services?

A. In July of 2013, I was asked by our Provincial Council to come to Saint Chris-tine’s Christian Services.

Q. Tell us about your ministry as a Daughter of Charity?

A. I entered the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg, Md in 1958. After formation I taught elementary school in Canton, Ohio; Emmitsburg, MD; Harrisburg, PA; Utica, NY; Bridgeport, CT; and Wilmington, DE In the mid-1980’s I began ministry in social service and parish ministry in Philadel-phia. In 1985 I went to Bayside, NY to work for the Progress of People Management (POP), an affiliate of Brooklyn Catholic Charities, as a Housing Coordinator in its senior apartment buildings. I left that work for a period of 6 years to minister as a parish minister and Director of the Opportunity Shop, the village food pantry and thrift store in Canastota, NY. In 2003, I returned to POP Mgmt where I again served for the past 10 years as a Housing Coordinator for senior subsidized housing until coming to Detroit Aug. 29, 2013.

Q. Tell us about your ministry thus far at St. Christine Christian Services.

A. I am still learning the ropes at St. Christine Christian Services working along-side its many dedicated volunteers at the pantry, soup kitchen, and hospitality cen-ter and the members of the St. Vincent DePaul Society . There is no way that I can “fill the shoes” of the Daughters of Charity who served here before me but I will do what I can to be of service to the people of Brightmoor along with those who have served so well and continue to do so.

Q. Is there anything else you want to say about Christ the King Parish.

A. First, I guess I would have to say that all the good things I have heard about Christ the King Parish seem to ring true and evidence a parish genuinely blessed and committed. I was happy to meet so many at Christ the King Festival of Minis-tries following the Mass on Sept. 22. Hopefully, that was the first of many opportu-nities to share liturgy with you and in your outreach to the Brightmoor Community through St. Christine’s Christian Service. Thanks for your welcome and for making me feel “at home” in your midst.

Healthy!

This year is a special year for both our a n n u a l Walk and for Focus:

HOPE! This year Focus: HOPE cele-brates 45 years of fighting racism, poverty and injustice. In honor of our co-founder, Eleanor Josaitis, who passed away in 2011, we have renamed the annual event to "Eleanor's Walk for Hope". Eleanor's Walk for Hope has special meaning for all of us who remember how much Eleanor enjoyed this event. She loved seeing peo-ple of all ages, races and ethnicities from the city and suburbs gather on our cam-pus to walk together in unity. She devoted her life to building a community that pro-vides hope and opportunity for all people. We are as committed as ever to trans-forming our community! And we want you to join us on Sunday, October 13, 2013 as we celebrate our commitment to the community. Special thanks to all the teams and individuals who participated in our past annual WALKs. This year, we are celebrating you--our supporters! We are walking 4.5 miles and instead of requiring a registration fee, we are suggesting that walkers obtain spon-sorships of at least $45 from family and friends in honor of our 45th anniversary! Donors of $45 will receive our first Elea-nor's Walk for Hope T-shirt.

At its heart, the RCIA formation experience is about growing in faith, coming to an awareness that each of us makes up the Church, and committing one's life to Jesus Christ and the Church. In gen-eral, the RCIA experience includes the following steps. There are individual exceptions to this out-line and timeline, and an alternative meeting time may be added to the schedule if the need arises. Period of Pre-Catechumenate

This is a time of inquiry. There are weekly meetings to ask questions, get acquainted, hear the story of salvation and learn the most basic traditions of the Church. Period of the Catechumenate This period is an apprenticeship in the faith of the community. It is a time for deeper formation of our relationship with God, for participating in the Liturgy, and for getting involved in service to others. We continue to meet weekly, as well as attend Mass to-gether on Sundays. During the liturgy, we leave the assembly to meet as a group to reflect on the scripture readings. Period of Purification and Enlightenment This is a time for healing and grace, a time for interior reflection on our relationship with God and others. This period coincides with the season of Lent and culminates with the decision to become Catholic. We will meet weekly as well as at Sunday Masses. Easter Vigil At the Easter Vigil Mass, we celebrate the Rite of Initiation, which includes Baptism (for those not yet baptized), the profession of faith, Confirmation and Eucharist. Period of Mystagogy (Follow-up) This is a time to explore and appreciate the mystery of Baptism and deepen one's grasp of the life, death and risen presence of Je-sus Christ among us. Mystagogy is a period of discernment about how to live out the meaning of the rituals just celebrated at the Easter Vigil. We meet weekly for four weeks after Easter.
