Why was the Civil Rights Movement Necessary?
• 13th amendment- “freed slaves”• Intention/assumption- blacks free=equal
citizens (failed)• 14th amendment- “blacks are citizens”• Intention/assumption- black= citizens=vote=
same rights and privileges as white counterparts (failed)
• 15th- “can’t deny anyone the right to vote based on race, previous servitude, religion,…”
• Intention/assumption-black males can vote (failed)
• Dual Society- 2 separate societies: white society and black society- co-exist
• Why? 1. legislation: Plessy vs. Ferguson• 2. tradition: action done automatically usu.
from generation to generation
• How does the NAACP intends to obtain EQUAL civil rights for blacks? Find instances where a black person’s constitutional rights (14th amendment)have been violated and take the organization/individual to court.
