While a sl gan suchas save the planet:buy a helic ptermight be stretching the truth

just a bit, helic pters arefully paid up, lentil-eating

tree-huggers in their re- ghting and f rest managementr les f r a start. Trees, it seems h ld the key t staving ffgl bal warming and the resultant c nversi n f ur benignEarthly climate int a lead-melting, acid-raining Venusianh rr r. That is if y u accept the new rth d xy which tellsus that carb n di xide emissi ns fr m human activi ties areheating up the w rld.

Trees st re carbn, h ld s il n steep slpes, slw waterws dwn thus helping t prevent ds, pump water int

the atmsphere and generate xygen. S cutting them dwnwithut replacing them is bad enugh, but setting re t themis much wrse because it releases all that lcked up carbn.

Alth ugh aviati n unfairly takes a l t f heat in thegl bal warming debate, we cant escape the fact thathelic pters have relatively large carb n f tprints when

c mpared with ther vehicles. They burn a l t f f ssil fueland release large am unts f carb n di xide int theatm sphere as a result. Gl bally, h wever, def restati n is amassive s urce f atm spheric carb n di xide that dwarfsaviati ns small but publicly lambasted c ntributi n.Def restati n is resp nsible f r 18% f man-made carb ndi xide emissi ns c mpared with aviati ns meagre 1.7%.

Accrding t a recent article in the UKs Guardiannewspaper, hardly an ap lgist f r aviatin, if trpicalrainfrest in Brazil, Cng and Indnesia cntinues t be

destryed at the current rate f r the next ve years, it willput as much carbn dixide int the atmsphere as everyight in the hist ry f aviatin up t 20 years hence, rs mething like that...

Wrldwide, we are lsing frest at a rate f 15 millinhectares per year, prducing mre carbn emissins than

any single cuntry, even China which recently vert k theUS as the wrlds biggest carbn emitter. While it is nly p litical and ec n mic p licy that can halt

and reverse the l ss f S uth American, Asian and Africanrainf rests, helic pters can play their part in m nit ringand rest rati n, as well as c mbating the damage wr ughtby the wildland res that represent an increasing menaceall ar und the w rld.

Helicpters are als indispensable t ls in general f restmanagement and cmmnly serve t re-seed areas damagedby re r cleared by lgging. Besides tree seeds, th se fgrasses and ther vegetatin alng with fertilizer andprtective misture retaining mulch can be spread efcientlyand quickly by helicpter. Re-frestatin may becme a largemarket f r helicpters in the near future if Chinas rst

natinal plan n climate change cmes t fruitin: it includesan aim t cver 20% f the cuntrys land with frest. Its als 21 years since helic pters played a central r le in

extinguishing what, with ut them, may have turned intne f the m st danger us res the m dern w rld has everseen: the react r re at the Chern byl nuclear p werplantnear Kiev, Ukraine. Maybe that sl gan is justi able after all.

Rather like l ng-range weather f recasting, predicting h w many new helic pters will bedelivered t civil cust mers up t a decade r sahead is n t an exact science. S thsayers in chief f r thehelic pter industry are rival engine manufacturers R lls-R yce and H neywell, b th f wh m naturally have a m rethan passing interest in the health and vitality f a marketsect r that by R lls estimate c uld be w rth $3.6 billi n inengine sales and $16.2 billi n in engine supp rt businessver the next 10 years. Their numbers are in fairly widedisagreement. R lls predicts 6,095 deliveries ver the2007 t 2016 peri d, whereas H neywell says gl baldemand c uld exceed 8,000 ver the 2007 t 2017 peri d.That difference f m re than 1,900 helic pters greatlyexceeds the margin y u w uld expect fr m the extra 12m nths in the H neywell f recast peri d.

R lls-R yces and H neywells f recasts sh w upwardtrends f r the next ve years, but the actual numbers differsigni cantly by 440 helic pters. Admittedly my meth df c mparis n was crude; I measured R lls graph c lumnswith a ruler and came t a number f 3,060 aircraft f r the2007 t 2011 peri d c mpared with H neywells declarednumber f 3,500, but still, 440 helic pters is a l t and al ng way utside likely measurement err rs, even using a

ruler n A4 paper. Assuming Im particularly cr ss-eyedand my measurement is ut by 1 mm, that w uld put me

just ver 16 helic pters ut, n t 440. Hwever, the f recastexcludes deliveries f ex-military aircraft t civil cust mers, but includes new deliveries t the paramilitary market.

A dECAdE OF StAbIlItYR lls civil f recast p ints t stability ver a 10-year peri d,the best years being between 09 and 15 and the spreadbetween the j int thinnest years (08 and 16) and thefattest year (13) being 213 aircraft; 491 playing 704 (R llssays 689 is the peak, but that difference f 15 aircraft iswithin my cr ss-eyed err r all wance f 1 mm n the graph, alth ugh the press release puts the peak in 2016 ratherthan 2013 where it is n the graph.)

Sc tt Crislip, President, Helic pter and Small Gas TurbineEngines f r R lls-R yce, said that the f recast stabilityre ects the l ng-term health f the civil helic pter market, with anticipated new pr duct intr ducti n t wards the endf the decade b lstered by str ng near-term paramilitarydemand fr m law enf rcement agencies. The market isrec gnizing the increasing value and utility f the helic pterin a variety f different r les. R lls-R yce is well-p siti nedin these high value areas with engines in service with m stf the leading airframers and is the leading pr vider fpr pulsi n systems and services f r these high-value light, medium and heavy-lift helic pters. The civil market, he saidwill be d minated by single-engine helic pters, acc untingf r 41% f deliveries, and light twins with 40%.

R lls f recast is based n cust mer new requirementand eet replacement plans, oEM f recasts andcust mer input. H neywells relies n purchaseexpectati ns expressed by nearly 1,000 ightdepartments in N rth America, Latin America,Eur pe, Asia , the Middle East and Africa what theysaid they expected t buy and why.

Theres pr bably m re light t be shed n thesituati n by c mparing f recasts fr m adjacentperi ds fr m the same c mpany rather than tryingt fath m the differences between the appr aches fdifferent rganizati ns. F r H neywell, this yields afairly spectacular 40% increase fr m ne t the nextwhen c mparing its 2002 t 2006 f recast with its2007 t 2011 eff rt. Furtherm re, it is pr bably m reuseful t characterise the f rces driving the marketand the directi ns that gr wth is set t take ratherthan getting t picky with the numbers.

R lls cites a gr wing ffsh re il supp rt market driven by

increasing il prices, expl rati n activity and pr ducti n asb sting demand f r heavy twins such as the S-92 andEC225. P lice and HEMS sales are predicted t be str ng asthe internati nal market expands, while c rp rate salesexpand as ight departments turn t the larger twins.

H neywell Aer spaces 2007 survey has identi edavi nics capabilities, perf rmance and p wer, and directperating c sts as the t p criteria perat rs c nsider whenselecting new helic pters, said Vicki Panhuise, Vice-President, H neywell C mmercial and Military Helic pters,H neywell Defense and Space.

The decisi n t acquire new helic pters is drivenprimarily by the age f current aircraft which is usuallyre ected in an perat rs desire f r better techn l gy,m re range, m re p wer and l wer perating c sts. Survey

results have impr ved f ur years running, and oEMs rep rtstr ng sales activity supp rting ur view that helic pterdemand has great l ng range pr spects in a gr wing gl balecnmy.

The 2007 utl k pr jects annual turbine helic pterdelivery levels exceeding 700 units in the near term, withsurvey based indicati ns that latent demand c uld driverates even higher if capacity limits are n t enc untered,Panhuise said. The impr ved 2007 utl k is als b stedby p tential new oEM entrants ffering aff rdable highvalue platf rms stimulating demand and drawing newperat rs int the turbine segment.

AnOtHER RObInSOn gAME CHAngER?That p tential new oEM entrant is, f c urse, R bins nHelic pters, which has l ng talked f building an entry-levelturbine-p wered helic pter if a suitable p werplant c uldbe f und. Well, ne has. The engine is a l w-c st derivativef the 250 series kn wn as the R lls-R yce 300, designedf r a 2,000 h ur TBo t match the airframe, a R bins nstandard. It will p wer R bins ns new ve-seat R66, which,if its success in the market is f the same rder achievedby the R22 and m re recently the R44 families c uld pr vet be a game changer.

on the subject f game changers, R lls f recast includesthe Bell Agusta Aerspace BA609 tiltr tr r, the rst tw

years pr ducti n f which have s ld ut. Sik rskys c axialX2 techn l gy has been delayed, but ffers an alternativeapprach t high-speed r t rcraft. Hwever, if technicalmerit rather than p litics were the engine f r t rcraftprgress these days, my mney wuld be n GrenBr thers Aviati n and their revival f the gyr dyne c nceptas the way f rward with the best rati f bene t t c st andrisk. As things stand, the Salt Lake City based c mpany hasa m untain t climb in the face f establishmentindifference, but its techn l gies might represent a real wildcard in the r t rcraft market, c nverting high-wing airlinersint high-speed VToL aircraft.

HEAltHY dISCORdby Peter d l sForecasters agree that the prospects for thecivil helicopter market are good, but not aboutexactly how good.

The AgustaWestland AW139 has sold very well in the

growing offshore oil and gas support market.

    I y Sikorsky.

    Because Ive alwaysbeen an overachiever.

Im demanding, and I want nothing but the

best. So I y a Sikorsky S-76 for business andpleasure. Sikorsky not only sets the standard

for rotorcraft excellence and safety; they exceed

it. Its evident in everything from the quality

of my leather interior to the way Im treated

when I call for support. The way I see it, not

everyone gets to y a Sikorsky helicopter.

    But everyone wants to.

    Sikorsky.
