The Civil Engineering Contractors Association has introduced a new suite of awards to recognise companies who can demonstrate they value and promote inclusion and diversity in the workplace and wider community. The awards will highlight organisations that understand the broad scope of diversity, nurture a culture of fairness, inclusion and respect and have taken active steps to ensure equality of opportunity.
Eligibility: All those working in the infrastructure sector of the construction industry.
Criteria: Entries were invited from organisations that have introduced innovative and creative interventions that are aligned to the business strategy and will inspire other employers to follow their lead.
Entries: Entrants were asked to provide a case study, of no more than 500 words, which describes how companies have developed an event, intervention or resource aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace, improving employability skills or access to job opportunities.
Entrants were advised that their case studies should define the target audience, explain the benefits of their projects, and any research or analysis carried out to ensure successful outcomes.

Biographies Mims Davies MP
Mims was selected for the Eastleigh seat in July 2014. In May 2015, she became the first female MP to represent the constituency, and the first Conservative since 1994. She worked in local radio for 12 years, including at the BBC, and most recently worked in strategic communications in road safety. Prior to being elected to Parliament, Mims served on Mid Sussex District Council and Haywards Heath Town Council. Mims is married and has two daughters, and in her spare time enjoys running.
Caroline Dinenage MP
Caroline Dinenage MP was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice and the Department for Education on 12 May 2015. She was elected Conservative MP for Gosport, Stubbington, Lee-on-the-Solent and Hill Head in 2010. Between 1998 and 2003 Caroline served on the City of Winchester local council. She was appointed the Small Business Ambassador for the South by the Prime Minister in June 2013 and between 2012 and 2015 sat on the House of Commons Business, Innovation and Skills Committee. From April 2014 to May 2015 Caroline served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP.

Loraine Martins MBE FRSA
Loraine is the Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Network Rail, which maintains and develops Britain’s rail infrastructure. With some 34,000 employees, it is the fastest growing railway in Europe. Loraine leads a centre of expertise which supports Network Rail’s ambition to be a more open, diverse and inclusive business.
Previously, Loraine led a multi-award winning team on equality and inclusion and employment and skills in the construction of the Olympic Park, its infrastructure, venues and facilities for London 2012, for which she was awarded an MBE. Loraine has worked in the voluntary, public and private sectors and run her own management consultancy working with global businesses including BP and Arup which has seen her work abroad.
Loraine is the vice chair of the Trust for London, a grant-making body which tackles inequality and poverty in the capital, where she is chair of the special initiative the London Living Wage Campaign, which won the Trust for London the accolade of grant-maker of the year in 2013. Loraine is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and has been inducted into the Women 1st Top 100 club, a network of the most influential women in hospitality, passenger transport, travel and tourism, who act as ambassadors and role models for the female leaders of tomorrow. An acknowledged mentor, trainer and facilitator, Loraine has worked with a wide range of people supporting them in their careers.

Project: Counting our footprint - making our footprint count
Synopsis: Acciona calculated the carbon emissions and water usage of the company globally and its 28,000-vendor supply chain. Working in partnership with direct and indirect suppliers large and small, the company delivered a collaborative strategy to reduce that footprint through research, conception, delivery and the lifetime of the infrastructure or energy project. Acciona will be carbon neutral this year and in the past 5 years has reduced group CO² emissions by 46%.

Project: Targeted Recruitment & Training at Bulford Road Improvement Project
Synopsis: Alun Griffith’s Targeted Recruitment & Training initiative at Bulford Road Improvement Project has
demonstrated the benefit of both direct employment and engaging with local people to increase employability skills and
supporting those facing barriers to employment. The project was able to provide 4 full-time employment opportunities but the TR&T Plan exceeded objectives and targets by also supporting 2 NEETs and 2 long-term unemployed people gain recognised
qualifications and site experience resulting in fulltime jobs within the construction industry.

Project: Inspiring Change At QE Olympic Park Transformation
Synopsis: At BAM Nuttall, we recognise that diversity brings a wider range of talents, skill and perspectives into an organisation, resulting in significant business benefits.
On this project we adopted an employment regime that provided long-term opportunities to under-represented groups specifically within the local community. Synopsis: Costain’s Supply Chain Academy has been developed to support and develop small to medium sized enterprises
(SMEs). The objective in supporting SMEs is to deliver economic benefits through a competent base of local businesses.
Equipping SMEs with the skills and resources to deliver on our major projects is mutually advantageous and also provides the
competency assurances to allow the SME to work on other non-Costain major projects.

Project: Armed Forces Employability Programme
Synopsis: Kier Construction Scotland are delighted with the results from their first AFEP, a joint Kier, DWP and MoD initiative
aimed at reducing the number of NEETs whilst increasing the number of Armed Forces Reserves. Originally developed by Kier,
in March 2015 the Minister for the Armed Forces announced its National rollout. The initiative is aimed at the long-term
unemployed, who sign up for a 4-6 week course where they gain valuable experience and skills, a guaranteed interview and the
possibility of full-time employment. Plans for their next rollout of the initiative are already in progress.

Project: Providing Jobs For Ex-Military Personnel
Synopsis: Kier Highways have a unique and strongly forged partnership with First Military Recruitment on their Highways England Area 3 Contract, assisting suitable ex-military personnel find employment in the construction industry. One previously wounded new employee submitted 173 job applications without reply, before Kier gave him his opportunity. Personnel may have been wounded and/or medically discharged, but this partnership is offering employment to a highly skilled but previously untapped resource, whilst providing a meaningful way back into civilian life.

Synopsis: The London Highway Academy of Excellence was established by F M Conway Limited in 2013. It was adopted
by the Worshipful Company of Paviors in 2014 to enable more apprenticeship opportunities to be offered. The academy runs
a two week pre-apprenticeship course offering recognised qualifications and then matches successful candidates with
employers.

Synopsis: Morgan Sindall is putting fairness, inclusion and respect at the heart of project delivery. Project: A465 Dualling Project – Tackling Unemployment In The Welsh Valleys
Synopsis: The Heads of the Valleys region in south Wales suffers from long standing severe deprivation and high unemployment. Throughout delivery of the A465 scheme Carillion focussed initiatives to provide employment and skills to local unemployed people. Using an on-site ‘Job-Shop’ and targeted recruitment days over 400 local people were employed (85% of the total labour spend). Through a pioneering volunteering programme, a local man was employed on site having been previously unemployed for 18 years.

Synopsis: In 2015 Atkins and Citizens UK launched Pathways to Engineering - a new community programme to provide

Project: Diversity - Driving The Future Of Our Industry
Synopsis: In August 2015, the CMSJV and A1L2B project were approached by Twofour Broadcast. They were directing a documentary called “Hire our Heroes” – a new 2 part series for BBC2 which saw renowned businesswomen Alex Polizzi help raise awareness of the issues facing veterans and ex-service personnel struggling to find work outside of the armed forces. The documentary followed the stories of 4 different ex-service personnel as Alex attempted to get to the root of the problem before trying to find them suitable employment, kick start a new career and hopefully help them transition into a new civilian job.The A1L2B project declared their interest as one of the ex-service personnel had an interest in the construction industry and the principles of the documentary aligned to our values.

Synopsis: To tackle gender stereotypes and promote diversity, Construction Youth Trust launched the national campaign
#NotJustForBoys as a manifesto for change in the sector. We need to encourage young women into the construction industry

industry training courses and more. By raising awareness of the many careers available across the industry, we aim to educate,
train and inspire more young women into construction and the built environment.

Project: Embedding BeFair to Drive Cultural Change
Synopsis: Embedding the CITB Be Fair Framework has allowed GRAHAM to drive cultural change across their business and positively influence the supply chain. A unique approach to delivery involved innovatively establishing FIR ‘Champions’ throughout the organisation and the development of a FIR
focused project team to drive change. Success has been proven through both an increase in all aspects of staff engagement
measured through a formal survey and an increase in recruitment from underrepresented, diverse groups.

Project: Where’s the Bear?
Synopsis: ‘Where’s the Bear?’ was introduced to integrate our infrastructure division within the wider business, whilst raising money for the Kier Foundation (our independently registered
charity). We challenged our staff to take the Kier Bear 1080 miles from office to office via nonmotorised transport.
The lessons we learnt exceeded expectations. It has helped shape the way we work. The final figure raised stood at £32,000, and is
testament to everyone’s hard work.

Synopsis: Skanska is working hard to address its low levels of female diversity, in particular at senior levels. The initiative being put forward is Skanska’s mixed pair mentoring scheme,
which helps foster greater understanding between employees of different sexes, and from this year has been extended to broader
diversity groups such as disability, sexual orientation etc. With over 200 mentee/ mentoring relationships, it is now believed to be a contributory factor in women progressing in the company as 10% of senior roles are now filled by women, up from 8% in
2011.
