January 2007 CROWNS Civic Auditorium C Brimming with “Hat Brimming with “Hattitude” rowns is a joyous cele- bration of African American women and their church hats, this endearing new play with music is a soul- stirring tribute to the unique cultural phenomenon that fuses faith with fashion. There is a hat for every occasion, from flirting to churchgoing to funerals to baptisms. Yolanda, a young girl from Brooklyn, is sent down south to stay with her grandmother after her brother is shot and killed. As she watches her grandmother and her grandmother's friends preparing for and going to Sunday church service, she begins to discover connections to older traditions and a deeper spirituality. You won't want to miss this Off-Broadway sensation; it's brimming with “hattitude,” riveting stories, dance, jazz, blues and glorious gospel music. As part of our Artist-in- Residence program, Broadway favorite Jerry Dixon will serve as the Director of Crowns. In addition to being an accomplished performer, whose Broadway credits include Once On This Island and Five Guys Named Moe, Jerry is also a much sought-after director. Most recently he staged a very successful production of tick, tick, BOOM! in Singapore. When Tony Award winner LaChanze was looking for someone to direct her solo concerts as part of the Lincoln Center American Songbook Series, she chose Mr. Dixon. Jerry's directorial credits include Practical Magic for the Actor's Studio Theatre and The Body Electric at Bucks County Playhouse. Crowns features a supremely talented cast and crew.
