History of Ogden
Memories From AlbertWoods:Buffalo Breweries Bull-whackers & Boomtown
HotelJames Mallon ran a hotelduring WWI for a few years, which was located west ofthe present post office.
Hannagan ElevatorWas originally built an oper-ated by Steve Clark around1918. He bought wheat andkafir corn. Mr. Clark camefrom Elbow community eastof Manhattan. He sold out toJames Hannagan andmoved west to go into the oilbusiness. The Hannaganfamily continued to operatethe elevator for severalyears. They closed it to thepublic and kept it for family
use. It was finally torn downin 1978 for safety reasons. The railroad tracks ran alongside of it and made visiondifficult at the street intersec-tions which caused somecar-train accidents.
LumberYardSteve Clark also built thelumber yard and operated it.Harry Blumberg was the lastto run the yard, which waslater sold to Harry Guthrie.
The StockyardsNear the Hannagan Elevatoralong the railroad trackswere the stockyards. Cattle, hogs and sheep wereshipped in and out by localfarmers and most livestockwas shipped on to KansasCity. On December 15,1899, my father shipped
sheep from there.Harry Bearman used to ship ina lot of Brahma cattle and onetime they were scared andwild. They broke loose fromthe pens and scattered allover Ogden. Farmers from thearea were called to help roundthem up and there was somequestions as to weather all thecattle were found.
