Regional Context & Connectivity
• The name Bhagalpur is etymologically derived
from Bhagdatpuram (meaning city of Good Luck)
• Bhagalpur formed a part of the ancient Sanskrit
kingdom of Anga, said to be ruled by king
Karna of Mahabharata
• Located in eastern part of Bihar on southern
bank of Ganga; 220 km east of Patna & 410 km
North-west of Kolkata on Patna-Sahibganj Road
(NH-80)
• Bhagalpur is one of the oldest trade centres
eastern India of famous for Silk industry
• Bhagalpur is second largest economic and educational hub of Bihar after Patna city.
• Bhagalpur city is well know industrial place for silk and cottage industry of India
• Bhagalpur has developed road network; NH-80 connecting Patna & Sahibganj, SH-19 connecting Dumka & Hansdiha, SH-19 connecting Banka & SH-58 connecting Purnia & Madhepura
• The city is bounded by river Ganga on the north, Champa Nala on the west, railway line on the south west.

Water Supply The main water source for
Bhagalpur city is underground water
The present supply of water is 21 MLD and the per capita water supply for the city is 38 LPCD
The length of water supply pipeline is approximately 55 km which cover 22% of total road length
At present the loss in the system (UFW) is considered as 26% of the total water supply against the standard of 20%
Bhagalpur city has a water treatment plant on the bank of river Ganga with the capacity of 9MLD.
Sewerage & Drainage Bhagalpur city do not have any
organized sewage disposal system The total sewage generated in
Bhagalpur is around 44.29 MLD About, 75% of total population are
having toilet facility within the premises
5% of city’s population use community toilets and 20% population resort to open defecation
There are 26 community/public toilets in the city of 10 seats each but all are poorly maintained
Only 20% of the city has sewage network services.
Bhagalpur city has drainage network of 162 km, of which 112 km is pucca drain and 50 km is kuccha open drains
Out of the total, about 196 tonn of waste is collected with a collection efficiency of 87%.

provide 20x7 power supply to Bhagalpur city using 132/33 KV Grid Sub-Station (GSS) at Sabour
There are 53,614 power consumers, of which 33,513 are domestic, 13,479 are commercial, and 6,622 are industrial connections
The average number of patient and bed occupancy ratio has been estimated 698 per day and 80% respectively
Bhagalpur has total 308 primary schools, 74 middle schools, 24 high schools and 6 degree colleges contribute in education of citizens

Traffic & Transportation Bhagalpur road network is in
a grid fashion with intersecting rail network in few wards
National Highway-80 traverses east-west and the State Highway-25 and 19 connect the city in the south.
The total length of city road has been estimated 175 km (Year 2010) including 10 km of National Highways, 33.12 km of State Highway & 132 km of district roads
The distribution of pucca and kutchha roads in the city is 105 km (60%) and 70 km (40%) respectively
Environment and Information Technology There are 2 air quality measuring
stations are available in Bhagalpur city; one at Aadampur and second at Chameli chowk.
The ambient air quality of city is within permissible limits
Ambient noise level in the monitoring locations were observed to vary between 40.2 to 68.2 dB (A) during wet season and 38.4 to 67.3 during dry season
Bhagalpur is affected by arsenic contamination in ground water
50-70% households own television set and around 40% household have telephone connection in Bhagalpur city

Bhagalpur do not have high speed internet connectivity as of now
Quality of life and Citizen Engagement The city houses 4 parks, 1
playground, 1 stadium, 1 town hall, 1 Library and 1 community hall for recreational needs of the citizens
The only stadium of the city is popularly known as TNB Stadium
Bhagalpur city lacks in sports and recreational sector as it do not have any good stadium or play ground
Citizen engagement is required for development strategies and plan preparations
Programs for citizen engagement should be organised and citizen should be encouraged to participate for better understanding of requirement
