...born of ancient Aboriginal cultures,

founded on golden dreams of prosperity

and sustained by a devotion

to its diversity – it is a city like no other.

Yellowknife sits in the heart of the wilderness,

at the edge of the Arctic,

and these boundaries give it beauty

in the most astounding ways.

It is a city of colour,

a city of contrasts; but above all,

Yellowknife is a city of spirit,

drawn from the mystery of the land

and its gracious people.

Our Golden History...Ji

In ancient times, the aboriginal people

derived sustenance from it,

while in modern times the gold miners

drew wealth from it.

Today, the land still gives Yellowknife

its strength and character.

The Dogrib people,

the original inhabitants of this area,

refer to Yellowknife as Somba K’e

meaning “money place”.

THE CITY OFYELLOW KNIFE

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES

M U L T U M I N P A R V O

The City Crest was adopted by Council on June 27, 1956,following a municipally sponsored contest in the spring of that year.

A design by Ms. Netta Pringle was chosen from among five finalists as best representing the essentialdynamics and character of Yellowknife, a community which would one day become the capital

and largest centre of the Northwest Territories.

The Yellowknife Crest is symbolic of the mining industry, Great Slave Lake, the Northern Lights, fishing, the Yellowknife Blade, the Raven and the Midnight Sun.

The phrase "MULTUM IN PARVO" is latin for – "Many things in a small place".
