96,000in1970.
Thedefenseera
gavewaytothe
high-tech era when
themicroproces-sorwasintroduced
in1971.During
theyearsthat
followed,compa-
nieswithforesightsawthepotentialof
computersandthepowerof semicon-
ductors.TheCitybecamethenexusof
research,developmentandmanufactur-
ingthatcreatedSiliconValley,andthat
legacycontinuestodayintheeraof the
Internet.
