Recycle Used Batteries

City residents may drop off household batteries at:

San Leandro Main Library • 300 Estudillo AvenuePublic Works Department, 14200 Chapman Road

Batteries contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium,and nickel and can contaminate the environment when they arenot properly disposed of. The State of California officially bannedhousehold batteries and other hazardous products (like fluorescentlights) from disposal on February 8, 2006 and must now berecycled at an authorized recycling facility.

Get to know the San Leandro Creek watershed by hiking it!Friends of San Leandro Creek Watershed Awareness Coordinator,Laurey Hemenway, will lead this interpretive hike through oneof the very first parks created by the East Bay Regional ParkDistrict. Hike to the headwaters of San Leandro Creek and onthe slopes of Round Top peak. We’ll see evidence of the HaywardFault and learn about the connection between thefault and the creek. We’ll also look at the differentplant communities along the way and theirinhabitants.

This is a moderately paced hike, about 4-5miles. Participants should be able to hike andstand for at least 3-hours, with brief restsalong the way. The trail is mostly shadedwith a steep elevation gain of 500 feet.Please wear comfortable hiking shoes orboots and appropriate clothing. Bringwater to drink. There are restrooms andwater in the staging area.

Swim Lessons are available at varying times. Find the lesson that suits your needs with the best instructors around. Not surewhat you or your child’s swim level is? Many times you may not be aware of your own or your child’s swimming level.Proper placement is important please check with staff on the first day of the lesson. Please note that all skill levels for everyage group are offered at various time slots. Lessons cover a variety of swimming skills, including: water safety, skilldevelopment, water awareness, and stroke refinement. Staff reserves the right to move a participant if needed. Classes notmeeting minimum requirements may be cancelled. If a storm or maintenance problem arises, the pool will be closed.

Big Read San Leandro KickoffThe Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), designed to restore reading to the center of Americanculture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperationwith Arts Midwest. The goal of the Big Read, which is the largest reading program in the U.S., is to bring together partners acrossthe country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The San Leandro Public Library, which is fortunate to be therecipient of the Big Read grant, has selected Amy Tan’s novel titled The Joy Luck Club. The Big Read San Leandro Program will runfrom January through March. Link ProgramThe purpose of this program is to provide financialassistance so that children of economically disadvantagedfamilies can participate in recreational programs.
