Refilling When You’re Running on Empty:
How to Practice Passionate Self-Care!
In this stress-filled world, we rarely lose sight of how to care for others but too often
lose sight of how to take care of ourselves. In this 60-minute exploration of how to
practice self-care, you will find yourself laughing in recognition as presenter Silver
Rose takes you on a fast-paced journey of discovery. Through humor, stories, videos
and participative exercises, participants will learn (a) how we sabotage our own well-
being, (b) some simple ways we can make our work (and personal) lives better RIGHT
NOW and (c) how to model this behavior for our clients and each other!

MORNING SESSION DESCRIPTIONS
Beyond Manicures and Pedicures: Self-Care for Yourself and Families you work with.
Pam Barnes-Palty, Psy.D., Therapist, Wooten and Associates & Aynsely Babinski, Psy.D., Buwalda Psychological Services
This presentation was developed to assist participants in identifying those things that bring peace,
joy, and renewal to their lives, invoke a sense of well-being and reduce burn-out. Participants will
use this holistic, multidimensional perspective to create their own individualized self-care plan that
can guide their self-care through the daily activities of their lives. Participants will be encouraged to
consider how this model of self-care can be a part of the work that they do with City of Phoenix
Head Start families to increase healthy self-care and stress management with those that they work
with.
Compassion for Self & Others
Wayne Tormala, Chief Arizona Department of Health Services, Bureau of Tobacco & Chronic Disease
This session will provide focus on how to exercise self-care and self-compassion as ways of ensuring
you remain healthy in a world of fast-paced change and ever-increasing demands on our
professional and personal lives that too often result in compassion fatigue, emotional distress, and
poor physical health.
Executive Functioning in the Early Childhood Setting
Suzanne Perry, Director of Early Childhood Special Education, Arizona Department of Education &
Lisa Kunz, Autism and Low Incidence Disability Specialist, Arizona Department of Education
This presentation describes three Executive Functioning skills that preschool-aged children begin to
demonstrate and how essential it is for children's first teachers to support their EF development.
Hands-on participation, activities, and opportunities for reflection on how to assess and teach EF in
the classroom will be provided. An introduction to how teaching social skills for typically developing
children and children with developmental delays such as autism are benefitted by direct instruction
of EF skills and social skills instruction.
Focused Kids and Mindfulness First
Kathy Hegberg, M.A.,L.P.C., Executive Director, Focused Kids & Sunny Wight, Founder, Executive
Director, Mindfulness First
Focused Kids was piloted with low income, immigrant parents and children, and in this fun,
experiential workshop participants will learn what the program has learned, that self-regulation
begins with co-regulation. Experience how parents with children ages 0-5 learn about the three
brain parts, using puppets for each part. Participants will practice mindful exercises to support the
development of skills such as reducing stress, paying attention and managing emotions. Participants
will also learn about the “Calm Down Basket” for home and classroom use.
Habits & Lifestyles’ Healthier Habits
Chesa Mendez, Creator/CEO, Habits & Lifestyles
The Workshop is researched-informed and engages the audience using a variety of interactive
methods including self-reflective questions, accommodating different learning styles, games, and
music. Self-reflection can be challenging for many people, and it is important to find the most
accessible way for people to think critically about their own behavior patterns.

Let’s Dig Deeper: How to Apply Passionate Self-Care Every Single Day at Work and at Home
Silver Rose, Owner, Silver*Rose Enterprises, LLC
Expanding what she delivered in the keynote, in this session you can take a deeper dive into exactly
how to apply Passionate Self-Care in your life day-to-day. At the beginning of the session, Silver will
ask, "What are you HOPING to learn over the next 90 minutes?" and write your answers on a flip
chart. Silver will then take those issues and provide pragmatic approaches for how to handle them,
and many more. There will be audience interaction, you'll be encouraged to ask questions and give
feedback, and yes, there will be exercises so you can practice some new approaches. If you're
serious about taking better care of yourself (so you can then take better care of others), this is a not-
to-miss session!
Now I'm in Charge! Caring for Your Team – Strategies to Promote Resiliency in Early
Educators through a Trauma-Informed Lens (Supervisors and Leaders)
Joanna Webb, Child Welfare Education Program Supervisor, Arizona State University Child Welfare
Education Program
A new generation of educational professionals is emerging, and sometimes it feels like we as leaders
are still trying to survive rather than lead. Supervisors, leaders, and mentors will learn, practice, and
share strategies for teaching mindfulness, compassion, and self-care strategies to early career
educators and service providers in an interactive format.
The Art of Listening
Sherri Anthony, Program Assistant, City of Phoenix Head Start Birth to Five
In this workshop, we will learn how effective communication is more than exchanging information.
We will work together to learn how improving communication skills build connections to others,
develops greater trust and respect, while improving teamwork and your overall social and emotional
health. Participants will be invited to participate in communication crossword, draw what you hear,
and pair and share experiences.
Understanding How Family Stress and Trauma Impacts Home Visitors
Brenda Orellana Mann, Early Childhood Specialist
Home visitors may become overly stressed from listening to the traumatic experiences of families
they serve. This stress is known as "secondary traumatic stress," or STS. Participants will discover
strategies for preventing and reducing STS. When home visitors are less stressed, the effectiveness of
their services to children and families is increased.
Workforce Resilience: Establishing a Culture of Safety and Support
Jenny Bilskie, Workforce Resilience Program Coordinator, Department of Child Safety
This workshop is designed to enhance professionals' resilience, both personally and professionally, to
secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma, cumulative stress, and burn-out. The workshop provides
a high-level review of the impact stress, and trauma has on the brain and provides practical
examples to make the information relevant.

breathing and relaxation strategies, crafts, reflection, music, and movement.
Executive Functioning in the Early Childhood Setting Suzanne Perry, Director of Early Childhood Special Education, Arizona Department of Education & Lisa Kunz,
Autism and Low Incidence Disability Specialist, Arizona Department of Education
This presentation describes three Executive Functioning skills that preschool-aged children begin to
demonstrate and how essential it is for children's first teachers to support their EF development. Hands-on
participation, activities, and opportunities for reflection on how to assess and teach EF in the classroom will be
provided. An introduction to how teaching social skills for typically developing children and children with
developmental delays such as autism are benefitted by direct instruction of EF skills and social skills instruction.
Exploring Empathy in Relationship-Based Work Laura Lamothe, Supervisor, Southwest Human Development & Angela Zilch, Senior Program Manager,
Southwest Human Development
Empathy can impact our work with children, families, teachers, and colleagues. What we think (and how we
think) about ourselves and others plays a critical role in how we interact with one another. This session will
explore empathy and its impact on the work of teachers, coaches, supervisors, and family support specialists
through discussion, videos, and small group work.
Got Bias? Tina Sykes, Quality First Academy Program Manager, Southwest Human Development
To effectively partner with families and interact with children, early childhood professionals must detect and
acknowledge their own biases, as well as the impact bias, has on their teaching and administrative practices.
In this session, we will create a safe environment to explore the various types of bias found within early
childhood settings. Through the use of self-reflection, group discussions, and engaging activities, participants
will examine their own biases and identify effective initial strategies to begin the process of countering bias.
Introduction to Mindfulness Sheri S. Dollin, M.Ed., Educational Consultant & Mindfulness Trainer
Evidence-based mindfulness strategies can help to better respond to situations mindfully rather than let
triggers cause you to react mindlessly. A discussion and engaging activity will be offered to illustrate the
application of mindfulness in the workplace and personal life. Discover how mindfulness curriculum and
resources support social-emotional learning and the development of skills that strengthen relationships and
builds resilience in any setting or situation.
Keeping Families Safe- An Injury Prevention Workshop Melissa Luxton, MSN, RN and Tracey Fejt, RN, Trauma Outreach/Injury Prevention Coordinator at Cardon
Children’s Medical Center - University Medical Center Phoenix
This workshop will cover three areas of injury prevention; motor vehicle safety, water safety, and firearm safety.

and risk reduction strategies that will increase the safety of the family, as well as the community.
Learning how to be Socially Emotionally Mindful for Oneself and in the Classroom Nicole Peterson, ECE Program Specialist, Arizona Department of Education, Early Childhood Education
In this presentation, participants will discuss the importance of being socially emotionally mindful in and out of
the classroom. Participants will engage in self-reflective activities, try to recognize triggers, and learn how to
change the overall climate, tone, and quality of the classroom environment.
AFTERNOON SESSION DESCRIPTIONS
Refueling your Mind, Body and Spirit Sas Jakeo-Singer, Early Childhood Program Specialist, Arizona Department of Education
In this interactive training, participants will review the four types of personal energy and seek to recognize the
importance of taking care of their own needs in relationship to providing quality care and education for
children. Participants will walk away with concrete ways to "refuel their mind, body and spirit."
Taking Care of Ourselves Stress Reduction Workshop
Brenda Orellana Mann M.Ed, Early Childhood Specialist & Shandeen Gomez, Education Coordinator, Greater
Phoenix Urban League
Participants will understand the definition of stress, and describe their own personal sources and signs of stress.

create an action plan for Managing stress.
Using Mindfulness as a Way to Build Trusting Relationships with Families Marissa Calderón, Trainer & Consultant, Alesi Group
This highly interactive session will guide participants through the process of self-awareness as it relates to their
relationships with families. We will explore relationship-based approaches that honor family ideals, values, and
perspectives and will discuss strategies for building upon strengths as we continue to provide comprehensive
support to them. This session will encourage participates to step into their creativity as they connect the
significance of mindfulness with their work with families!
When the Moments Transform the Lens We See Through: Using Mindfulness in Leadership & in
the Supervision of Others (For Supervisors) Dr. Isela Garcia, Director, Alesi Group
Aligning with the Parallel Process: Do unto others as you want them to do unto others, mindfulness is an
incredibly powerful approach in supervision, coaching, and leading as this models the experience we want
for children and families. Likewise, the practice of being in the moment as we engage with others not only
conveys significant messages to those we work with, but can also reduce our own levels of stress and anxiety
as we engage with others, even in the most challenging situations.
Work Life Balance: A Pharmacists Prescription To Wellness In Social Services Michael Campbell, PharmD, Walgreens
This presentation involves an overview of the adverse childhood experiences (ACE’s) study and its impact on
healthcare today. The topic of trauma informed care is all encompassing concerning social services,
educational, medical, and pharmaceutical interventions. Life-work balance, self-care, and self-regulation are
key for providers to master for us to even begin to scratch the surface of fostering meaningful relationships
with families and children. This will be the main focal point of the discussion.
