8 Red Hat Chit Chat

The Lakeshore Red Hatters meet the 2nd Friday of the month at 1:30pm at the Manitowoc Senior Center. Monthly tea will be August 10th. Hostesses are JoAnne Fischer, Diane Cisler, Elma Castro, Arleen Hastreiter and Denise Beyer. The tea this month will be our PICNIC. Please note, we will start at Noon! The picnic will be held at the Lincoln Park concession stand next to the tennis courts and baseball diamond, west of the field house. Please bring a dish to pass, meat, buns, condiments and beverages will be provided. The August luncheon out will be at Rock-N-Blues (old Studio 8) on Thursday the 16th. Meet at 11:30am and eat at Noon. Our July tea hostesses were Barb Ahrens and Reta Meissner with a little help from a few of the ladies. They served delicious strawberry shortcake and our speaker Mary Lindeman provided crackers and cheese spreads from her family business Pine River Cheese. We sang happy birthday to Mary Ann Brueninger, Bev Gilbertson, Betty Heinzen, Carol Parker and Doris Remiker. Mary Lindeman put on a very impressive style show with many models and lots of wonderful outfits. Mary, the proprietor of “What Should I Wear” is a wardrobe stylist and personal shopper with a “Green” twist. She procures recycled clothing and accessories from consignment stores, thrift stores and your closet to create unique outfits for you at a fraction of the cost of new. She photographs the outfits

and puts them on a flash drive for you to put on your computer or take to a store and have the photos printed. Give her a call at 920-946-5531 and you will never again have to say “What Should I Wear”. If you are going on a trip, she can put together interchangeable outfits so you can pack half as much. Or, you may have a special occasion you just need help pulling together the right clothing for. She can dress ladies of all sizes and ages. It’s easy to get to Mary’s in-home Boutique.

Just take Hwy 42 South of Menards past St. Thomas the Apostle Church to Newton Road, turn Right (W) on top of the hill on the North side of the road at 13032 Newton Road. It’s worth the drive just to see her beautiful home! Thanks again Mary. We had some guests to check out our style show, Nancy Krueger, Joan Chizek, Laverne Berge,

Muriel Scharer, Agnes Neumeyer, Elane Lemberger, Julie Klinzing and Eileen Rud, hope I didn’t miss anybody. Please join us again, all ladies are always welcome. We lost another one of our Red Hat Angels, Jan Fleming. A group of us went to the funeral in Two Rivers. The family appreciated support of the Red Hatters. I also heard that Kathryn Oswald had back surgery, we wish her a speedy recovery. To let you all know, I wait until Monday following our tea to send the Chit Chat so if anyone ever has any changes or additions it gives a little time for you to call me. Claire’s Mixed Berry Crumble

Ingredients and Directions Ingredients For the filling: • 6 cups berries, a combination of blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries (or use just one kind of berry if you prefer) • 2-3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 1-2 tablespoons finely grated lemon zest • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar • 4 tablespoons dark brown sugar • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly butter a 9x13 baking dish. Set aside. Rinse berries. Let drain and/or pat dry. They’ll give off a lot of juice as they bake, so you don’t want to add extra moisture in this step. Place the berries in a large bowl. Gently toss with lemon juice and zest. In a small bowl, combine the white and brown sugars and the flour. Sprinkle over the fruit and toss gently to combine. If your fruit seems extra juicy, add a little bit more flour. Pour the fruit mixture into the baking dish and set aside. Cut the butter into small pieces and place in a large bowl. Combine the flour, sugars, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl. Add to the butter. Using your dampened hands, blend until crumbs form. The butter will be stiff at first, but will warm up slightly as you work it with your hands. When all the dry ingredients are incorporated, add the nuts. (If you have family members and/or guests with nut allergies, old-fashioned rolled oats are a good substitution here.) Sprinkle crumb mixture over the top of the fruit, squeezing the crumbs together to form clumps as large as you like. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes, until the crumb topping is crisp and golden and the fruit is bubbly. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.

For the crumble: • 2 sticks cold, unsalted butter • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg • 3/4 cup chopped nuts of your choice • Directions

White Chocolate Raspberry Mousse Directions

1. Process berries in a blender or food processor until smooth. Strain mixture into a small bowl, and dis-card seeds. Add the sugar and liqueur, and stir un-til sugar dissolves. Makes 1 cup of sauce. 2. In a heavy saucepan on low heat, warm 1/4 cup of the cream and the white chocolate, stirring con-stantly until chocolate melts. Let mixture cool until it is lukewarm. Stir in 1 tablespoon of raspberry

sauce, and the food coloring. Transfer to a large bowl. 3. In a medium bowl, whip remaining 1 1/2 cup cream to soft peaks. Fold into melted chocolate mixture, one-third at a time, until no streaks remain. 4. Layer into parfait dishes, and serve with the sauce. May also be used to fill or ice a cake.

Join us for a presentation on Medicare and Long Term Care, presented by Ricky Zahn with Northwestern Mutual and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield on Monday, September 17th at 10:00am in the center assembly. Learn the difference and average cost of Medicare, Parts A, B, C and D, the difference between Medicare Advantage Plan and Medigap within Medicare Part C, the costs of Part D (Prescription Plans) and how it is attained. Learn the details of the Initial Enrollment period, Open Enrollment period and Special Enrollment period and how someone would qualify for each of these. Long Term Care will also be discussed. Learn the basics of what Long Term Care Insurance is and how it can cover Home Health Care, Adult Day Care, Assisted Living Facility and a Skilled Nursing Facility and what the average costs of each of these facilities may be. Medi-caid assistance and how to qualify will be discussed, as well as, The Wisconsin Long Term Care Partnership Program and how it can protect assets from Medicaid assistance. There will be time for questions following each topic. Open to the public.

Join us on Tuesday, October 2nd as we take an adventure to Williams Bay where we’ll walk in the footsteps of Albert Einstein at the Yerkes Observatory, the birthplace of modern astrophysics, est.1897, on Geneva Lake. Walk inside the 90-ft done, one of the largest of its kind ever built,

view the famed 40-in Refractor telescope, the world’s largest lens-type telescope, and its impressive 73-ft diameter elevator floor!. We’ll also take time to visit the gift shop and the Quester Museum where artifacts and personal effects are on display of some of Yerkes Observatory’s most famous astronomers.

Afterwards, we’ll grab a bite to eat at Sprecher’s Restaurant in Lake Geneva. Enjoy the view of the lake as we dine on your choice of Brew Pub Meatloaf or Schnitzel, both served with Beer-Cheese Potatoes and Seasonal Veggie, or a Chicken Pot Pie served with a fresh-baked muffin. *Please make your selection at the time of registration.

Then we’re off to travel back in time on the East Troy Electric Railway, the last vestige of Wisconsin’s once broad network of electric interurban railways, built between 890-1910, once totaling approx. 385 miles of track. Take some time to walk through the Museum before stepping back in time when life was a little bit simpler as we take you on a 10 mile docent led ride through beautiful Southeast Wisconsin. We are happy to announce the return of this free Senior Citizens Insurance Counseling, which originally started out as a Public Service Project in the 1980s and is once again offered to you by Mr. Hermann on behalf of J. Johnson & Associates. Todd Hermann, LUTCF, will be offering Free

Insurance Counseling for Senior Citizens here at the Center on Tuesday, August 14th and August 28th from 9:30am

to 11:00am (by appointment).

Counseling will relate to Insurance issues with Life, Health, Auto and Home and is meant to make the questionable

understandable & informative. Schedule your 20 minute appt. today at the Senior

Come join us for Birthday Bingo on Monday, August 27th at 1:00pm. We invite all Center birthday celebrants and any other center members

wanting to celebrate with them to join us in celebrating this month’s birth-days with an afternoon of Bingo, Cake and Ice Cream!

As in the past, we ask those celebrating a birthday to bring a cake to share. We will provide ice cream and coffee. Birthday celebrants who

bring a cake will be given two bingo cards to play on. Following the games we will celebrate birthdays and enjoy the cake and ice cream!

Cards sell for .50 each with a max. of four cards per person. All money taken in will be given out again as prizes.

Learn 3 or 4 very simple blocks and as a group effort, you will construct small quilts, which will be donated to a needy group.

Most supplies have been donated for this purpose. Woman power is needed!

AARP DRIVER’S SAFETY COURSE

Register now for AARP’s Driver Safety Classes which will be held on Wednesday, August 22nd at the Manitowoc Senior Center beginning at 8:30am until 12:30pm.

This Drivers Safety Course is offered to those in the Educa-tional Field. The National Retired Teachers Association is sponsoring these classes and offering those in the educa-tion field a special price of $5.00 with the coupon. The discount coupon may be downloaded at www.aarp.org/educators. However, those who would like to take the course and are not in the educational field, you are still

welcome to take either of the courses at the regular rate of $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members. Payment by check is preferred and checks should be

made out to AARP.

Brush up on driving skills and the laws of the road . There is no driving involved and no tests. Check with your insurance company to see if completion of this course will qualify you for a discount on premiums. Please bring your

Driver’s License and AARP Card with you.

During the month of August, we will show THREE family-fun movies that can be enjoyed by grandparents and their grandkids! The movies

will be played on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Tuesday of the month at 1:00pm. Come on down and enjoy these special days with your kids

Sometimes it feels a bit chilly

in the Senior Center compared

to the warm weather outside. Remember to bring a sweater with you

when you come for activities. We try to keep the rooms comfortable, but un-fortunately we can’t please everyone. Please remember to dress for air conditioning and not the weather outside.

Lincoln Park Zoo to the Senior Center for all to enjoy before the movie at 12:30. See how the animals are taken care of in real life and find the similarities between the movie and our own zoo here in town. The animals that will make

the trip over here will include a snake, tarantula, bearded dragon, and a tortes!

the counter asking to change their 5s, 10s, 20s, etc. Please be aware that we cannot continue to make change at the Senior Center on a daily

basis. Doing so puts us here in a bind when it comes to balancing as we don’t have extra cash on hand. If you are participating in activities at the Center which require quarters, dollars, etc., please be sure to stop at the bank beforehand. Thank You

BUS TRIP POLICY

TRIP SIGN UP Trips are open to all Senior Center members and their guests. Those registering may only register one (1) other person other than themselves. In order to ensure that a trip will run, we need 30 people. Early registration is key. PAYMENT Payment must be made at the time of registration. Sign up can be taken over the phone with a credit card or in person with payment by cash, check or credit card. Non Center members are asked to pay an additional $15.00 fee in addition to the trip cost. BUS LOADING ORDER Seating is according to the order of sign up. The computer program keeps track of the sign up order and names will be called according to that list. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to departure time to ensure enough time for loading. PARKING Please park in the small parking lot area located across the street from the west parking lot off of Peto Street. CANCELLATION / REFUND POLICY Trip cancellations made before the registration deadline will be refunded in full. Those can-celling the trip after the registration deadline will forfeit the cost of the trip. However, if there is a reserve list, we will notify anyone on that list to possibly take your spot and financial re-sponsibility for the tour. BUS BUCKS Bus Bucks in the amount of $5.00 will be given out whenever there is a full bus of 54 people. One ticket per person per trip will be allowed. These bus bucks may be used towards any Senior Center arranged tour.
