CITY OF MADEIRA FALL 2021 City-Wide LEAF Collection THE MADEIRA SERVICE DEPARTMENT will be collecting leaves from curbside starting October 11 thru December 23. Madeira streets are divided into two zones. Each zone will be picked up every other week. You will find your street and zone listed on the next page of this newsletter. We cannot be specific as to the exact day your leaves will be gathered due to the unpredictable amount of leaves each resident may leave out. We will do everything we can to get your leaves picked up in a timely fashion. Keep in mind the Service Department must also maintain its normal work duties in addition to providing the leaf pick- up service. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE! PLEASE –PLEASE—PLEASE—PLEASE NOTE: Rake all leaves to the edge of the road. ONLY LEAVES, PLEASE! Be careful not to have landscaping stones or branches mixed that may harm the Service Department employees and damage the rented equipment. (See page 3 for information on Hamilton Countys free yard waste drop- off program.) Do not put leaves in the streets. This creates a hazard for vehicles and may clog storm water drains. It is important to keep the storm water drainage path clear at all times. Avoid parking your vehicle near the leaves. The equipment cannot access the leaves if a vehicle is obstructing the area; this will cause your leaves not to get picked up until the area is clear of vehicles. Be aware that dry leaf debris may be left behind by the equipment due to leaves filtering through the top screening of the equipment. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable. Rainy weather often helps minimize this problem. Wet leaves, however, may clog the equipment slowing down the pick-up process. In the event of rain, it is conceivable for pick-up to be delayed a few days. Please make allowances for rainy weather. ALSO PLEASE NOTE: Neither zone has been scheduled for pick-up during the week of Thanksgiving. Since this is a short week due to the holiday and generally our heaviest time for leaves, the City will set aside this week to catch up on the schedule. If you have any questions, please call the Municipal Building at 561-7228. Leaf Collection to Begin October 11! MADEIRANEWS

FROM THE DESK OF THE CITY MANAGER

Many thanks, again, to all of our volunteers on the Park and Recreation Board and the Inclusion Committee for their time and efforts on the most recent community events. This year we began our tradition of holding celebrations of community, including the first Pride Picnic in June and the Annual Street Dance in August. Mark your calendars for October 2nd for the return of the Bonfire on the Ballfield event at McDonald Commons Park—another family friendly opportunity to see your friends and neighbors in “The Friendly Town”!

Euclid Avenue Project Update. The new intersection at Camargo and Euclid is taking shape with the base pavement scheduled to be installed the first week of October. Once the base is finished, the contractor will mill the entire street between Hosbrook and Camargo and install the top/final course of asphalt to complete the project. We expect completion of the project in mid-October. This $1.7 million project on one of our major streets is another important improvement to the City’s Infrastructure as it replaced more aging infrastructure and provided another length of sidewalk toward completion of the City’s current Sidewalk Master Plan. Again, our team appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding during major projects like these. Closing a main street causes stress and inconvenience for everyone. We hope the improvement is worth the wait!

Miami Avenue Traffic Calming Project. The City was recently awarded $3.5 million from the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) for a major improvement to Miami Avenue between Euclid and Camargo. Last year, City Council commissioned a study to determine how Miami Avenue can be made safer for both pedestrians and motorists. The results of the study, which can be found on the City’s website at https://www.madeiracity.com/news_detail_T37_R30.php, will widen sidewalks, create dedicated left turn lanes at all intersections and provide for more marked pedestrian crossings. The grant award from SORTA does not cover the entire cost of the project; we are making application to Hamilton County to secure the remaining funds through the State Capital Improvement Project program. We should learn more about the success of this grant before the end of this year.

2021 Street Repair Program. Due to the lack of bids which could meet our deadline of December 31, 2021, we are forced to delay the street repairs which were originally scheduled to be completed this fall. This includes the following streets:

Rita Lane Iuka Avenue Osceola Drive Sanoma Drive Sanoma Avenue Rathon Avenue Madeira Hills Drive Willowhollow Drive We are rebidding the program along with the 2022 Street Program. We intend to get ahead of the other communities by bidding the project later this year so it can begin in the early Spring. Watch for more information through the email listserv, Facebook and Twitter.

Chief David Schaefer and the Madeira Police welcomed Officer Cameron Stewart to their ranks on August 18, 2021. Officer Stewart grew up in the Toledo, Ohio, area, graduating from Toledo Christian High School. He was accepted into a prestigious leadership program and earned a four-year scholarship at Bowling Green State University.

While attending BGSU, Cameron quickly found his calling in policing and majored in Criminal Justice. He also met his future wife while attending BGSU. After graduating from BGSU with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Degree, Officer Stewart worked for the Wood County Juvenile Detention Center before entering the training academy for the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

After training at the academy in Columbus, Officer Stewart was commissioned as a State Trooper for the State of Ohio and was relocated to the Cincinnati

Post. He served at the rank of Trooper and served in Hamilton County for over four years before coming to Madeira as a Police Officer.

We welcome Officer Stewart, and wish him a long and happy career with MPD!

10-Digit Dialing Coming Soon

The FCC has recently adopted "988" as a new three-digit, nationwide number to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Line. In order for 988 to work in our area code, mandatory 10-digit local dialing will begin October 24, 2021. What will the new dialing procedure be?

To complete all local calls, you will need to dial the area code + telephone number. This applies to all calls within your area code that are currently dialed with seven (7) digits. What will remain the same?

• Your telephone number, including the area code, will not change

• The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services

• What is a local call now will remain a local call regardless of the number of digits dialed

• You will continue to dial 1 + area code +telephone number for all long-distance calls

• You can still dial 911 for emergencies

You can still reach The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by dialing 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Daylight Saving Time Ends

your clocks back 1
