our vision Our vision is to reduce injuries in the solid waste management sector by getting Cincinnatians to empathise with the community around them, right down to their solid waste collectors.

We’ve created a suite of service ideas which will increase citizen responsibility and the safety of waste collectors. These ideas will help educate the public on sanitation services, reduce the overall amount of trash, and connect Cincinnatians to their overall communities.

trash to treasure

Many bulk items

residents leave on their

curb is either picked up

by dumpster divers or

end up in a landfill.

Rather than have

these bulk items take

up space in a landfill,

we suggest holding

monthly auctions

where residents and

"dumpster divers" can

bid on items such as

scrap lumber, furniture,

and old appliances.

Proceeds from these

auctions would fund

special projects within

the city such as park

renovations or after-

school programs.

Bottom. Potential auction setting. Left. Sofa to be picked up for bulk removal. Such an item could be sold off at auction.

Holding an auction on bulk trash provides

additional revenue for Cincinnati programs.

Selling bulk trash saves space in the landfill.

Selling these used items encourages reuse

rather than new purchase.Unlike Goodwill auctions, proceeds from these auctions will go to local initiatives.

Each neighborhood can take pride in their history and culture, and what makes each that area special. Cincinnatians can learn about the many neighborhoods and discover something they may have not known before.

Example: Mount Adams

• The hill was renamed Mount Adams in honor of President John Quincy Adams, who delivered the observatory's dedication address

• Mt Adams is surrounded by one of Cincinnati's finest parks - Eden Park, Cincinnati.

• The observatory opened in 1843, and owned the most powerful telescope of its kind. The old observatory later became the Holy Cross Monastery and expanded, but closed in 1977. The monastery is now used for commercial office space.

• In 1892 Maria Longworth, daughter of Nicholas Longworth, opened Rookwood Pottery

Cincinnati residents of all ages.

Partner with ArtWorks, a non-profit organization in Cincinnati. Youth and professional artists can paint murals and imagery for each neighborhood. People can research the history of each area and write fun facts along with the imagery.

snow emergency

Snow and other sever weather conditions make garbage collection more difficult for employees and poses several safety threats. Snow plows and garbage trucks often run the same route and sometimes employ the same drivers. In order to unify the tasks of plowing snow and collecting trash, we

propose attaching the snow plow attachments to existing garbage trucks. During snow storms, sometimes garbage collectors cannot reach out to the bins because of big piles of snow. Having the snow plow apparatus attached to the trucks will alleviate this issue.

Waste Management employees and residents

By attaching snow plows to existing garbage

trucks, the City of Cincinnati won't have to

worry about diverting drivers from waste

removal to snow removal as both jobs will

be consolidated. It saves time in that waste

removal will no longer be delayed as a result

of poor road conditions.

This will be a unique service provided by City of Cincinnati which promotes employee safety and superior services to their residents.

garbage boyDistricting neighborhoods to “trash

routes,” similar to paper routes for

newspaper delivery.

It would be the job of a young

resident to collect the trash in their

neighborhood and drop it off in

their assigned drop-off center.

The teen collector’s list of houses

could be broken down to just a

few houses a day to be taken to a

community dumpster. This dumpster

would be collected once weekly by a

garbage collection truck.

Residents will become more accountable

for what they throw away, knowing the

neighbor’s son or daughter that will be

coming to collect their trash; perhaps they

will even start a holiday tradition of tipping

their reliable “garbage boy/girl.” Youth will

learn the value and the responsibilities of

a first job, without having to worry about

a uniform, travel expenses or a large time

commitment.

Suburban, single-home residences.

• Only 1 driver required for dumpster pick-ups

• Fewer, easier, safer stops for trucks

• Employing youth with their first job and life skill.

garbage drop-off centers

This incentivized drop-off center allows residents

to choose to opt-out of receiving regular trash

pick-and receive a tax benefit or monetary

incentive by dropping off their trash to a specified

area dumpster site.

A seamless garbage drop-off center. Disguised in the garage of what appears to be a house in a suburban area.

teaching trash

Some of the loudest and biggest evangelists of the recycling movement were children. Many were taught the benefits of recycling at school and, in turn, influenced their households to start recycling.

Our proposed education program is to have solid

waste workers and management visit schools and teach them the benefits of proper trash removal. Small"field guides" can be disbursed to help educate kids (and their parents) on the proper way to dispose of trash as well as the virtues of composting and recycling.

Elementary school children (Kindergarten through Sixth Grade) as well as their parents.

Teaching children acceptable trash disposal

methods will allow them to police their

parents and prevent them from throwing

out materials in a manner than may injure

workers (such as removal of wet dry wall)
