CITY NEWSLETTER BEST OF SOUTH SALT LAKE EDITION

Congratulations to the Best of South Salt Lake award winners! I was thrilled to highlight some of the best people, businesses, food, volunteers and partners in the city at my State of the City address on March 16th. If you don’t already know, the best of the best can be found in South Salt Lake each day, working hard to make the city a great place to live, learn, eat, work, do business, shop, and play. People are choosing to connect with South Salt Lake because it is clearly a “best of Utah” kind of place. This newsletter edition highlights a few of the incredible people and places in the city. In the seven square miles of the city, there are now over 100 restaurants, featuring a wildly diverse selection of some of the world’s most delicious food, and there are more on the way. There are 500 new housing units—each one homier, more state of the art or more spectacularly designed than the last. 500 more will be built this coming year. Wonderful new businesses are putting down roots here—including a new grocery store, Winco, at 2100 South between State and Main Street, in South Salt Lake’s new downtown. We are accommodating more children and youth in pre-schools and afterschool programs than ever before, and our schools are getting better and better. Families love what we have to offer, and more and more are choosing to make South Salt Lake their home. And we are just getting started! I was warmed by the attendance of so many residents and businesses at the State of the City address. We had a crowd of 250 for lunch and another 50 for the evening presentation. It was such a pleasure to talk with all of you and celebrate our community accomplishments. I thank our city staff and partners for hosting information booths so you could learn more about our city government. Our 2016 tax situation is resolved with a balanced budget, and our city employees are continuing to do more with your property taxes, which I have not been raised once since I took office. Our city continues to make long-term investments in maintaining our streets, utilities, parks and community centers. Our youth continue making gains academically, in their self-confidence, and in life skills. As always, the evidence is encouraging that our community is “On the Move.” I credit you for our shared success. Your enthusiasm, personal contributions and can-do attitude make anything possible in our community. We have a bright future, and I can proudly to say that we earned it. To quote Lucille Ball, “Luck? I don’t know anything about luck. I’ve never banked on it and I’m afraid of people who do. Luck to me something else: Hard Work - and realizing what is an opportunity and what isn’t.” CITY NEWSLETTER South Salt Lake City Council Members Ben B. Marianne Jeo began her education career 5 years ago when she started teaching 3rd grade at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. She believes all students can learn and she inspires each of her students to meet their personal potential. She believes positive thinking equals positive results. Her students’ achievement speaks for itself. Their math data ranks among the highest in the district for Title 1 teachers. Her students outscore school and district averages. Marianne has the ability to make everyone around her work harder and reach for the stars. The city wants to share the gratitude and admiration that teachers, students and parents have for “Mrs. Jeo” by honoring her as our South Salt Lake Educator of the Year.

Educator of the Year: Marianne Jeo

At Granite Park Junior High, Principal Danny Stirland sees every challenge as a potential asset while serving more than 700 students in one of the most diverse schools in Utah. Danny, his teachers, and faculty take great pride in the youth and families they serve.

“At Granite Park, we are proud to say that 65 percent of our students are bilingual or will be, as many are rapidly learning to speak and write English. We see this as a major opportunity.” he says. Stirland is everywhere throughout South Salt Lake, forging partnerships for in-school and afterschool programs with Promise SSL, United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, University of Utah Reading Clinic, Savage Company employees, AmeriCorps, & others.

One of Stirland’s first projects for Granite Park was to establish the Tumaini Center (the Swahili word for “hope”), which offers a two-week orientation course for young refugees who are preparing to enter South Salt Lake schools for the first time. Students learn about school culture and work on their communication and literacy skills in English, as well as arithmetic and computers. “While we are happy to see the data points that show how we have improved significantly in school achievement, what is even more gratifying is the collaborative spirit in our community behind the individual success stories of our students,” Stirland says. Congratulations to Danny Stirland, our United Way-Promise South Salt Lake Partner of the Year.

Recently, she became the founding sponsor of the South Salt Lake-Westminster College partnership. Walkways to Westminster is a college preparatory program helping South Salt Lake youth become college-ready through experiences, mentorship and coaching.

Barbara showed her commitment to youth early as she earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Utah in 1937. In 2002, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service degree by Westminster College for her numerous humanitarian contributions. Her service never stops. At 99 years old, Barbara is one of the most active women around. It is with admiration and gratitude that we recognize the South Salt Lake Community Icon, Barbara Tanner.

She inspires greatness and radiates light that makes those around her feel welcomed and loved. Congratulations to Bonnie Owens, South Salt Lake Employee of the Year!

Questar ConstructionThank you for your patience on 300 East between 2100 South and 3300 South as Questar completes important repairs to the aging natural gas lines in this neighborhood. They are staging construction at the corner of 2100 South and 300 East and their workers are often controlling traffic on 300 East to ensure everyone remains safe. Public Works Week – May 15-21, 2016“Public Works, Always There”

The theme for Public Works week this year is “Public Works, Always There”. This year, employees in our Stormwater/Wastewater Division will be reaching out to elementary schools in South Salt Lake to educate children in the first grade classes about stormwater pollution prevention, sewer collection and what the Public Works department does to help.

Each year, a division within Public Works brings a piece of heavy equipment to demonstrate to the children. The children take part in an equipment naming and coloring contest. The winning name is announced and painted on the side of the equipment vehicle. The child that submits the winning name receives an award and gets to ride in the 4th of July parade in the newly-named vehicle. The 2015 Public Works vehicle was the front loader. The winning name that was chosen and now proudly displayed, is ‘Gravedigger’! We look forward to seeing what the SSL children come up with for the Mini Excavator this year.

If you have any questions about Public Works Week, call 801-483-6045. The offices are located at 195 W. Oakland Ave., right off of West Temple near the South Salt Lake water tower.

Pat’s Barbecue155 W Commonwealth Ave, SSL, UT 84115801-484-5963www.patsbbq.com

Pat’s Barbecue is enchanted with the aroma of slow-smoked pork, blues music and owner Pat Barber. He has been our city ambassador on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Pat has been the backbone of our Downtown Exchange and Streetcar Committee meetings. He has been there with us through thick and thin because he knows the key to a happy heart is a happy belly. The food is award-winning, and he probably doesn’t need one more “Best of” award on his walls, but we have never before had the chance to highlight Pat’s Barbecue. Thank you to Pat’s Barbecue for being a friend to the city and the 2016 Best Restaurant in South Salt Lake.

Dented Brick Distillery3100 S Washington St, SSL, UT 84115801-326-3913www.dentedbrick.com

South Salt Lake is becoming home to a number of creative and craft start-up businesses that are changing the way we think about business. A whole new generation of entrepreneurs is making their living doing “something old, something new.” Fortunately for South Salt Lake, they are finding exactly what they are looking for in our little city. Dented Brick Distillery purchased a 1919 home in a semi-industrial area near the 3300 South TRAX station. They saved the bricks as they dismantled the home and built a 14,000 square foot distillery with a

warehouse and production floor sized for rapid growth. The beautiful building houses an equally beautiful 28-foot tall Vendome Copper Still, which just turned out its first product: Antelope Island Rum. They have relentlessly promoted their business and proudly boasted about their South Salt Lake location. Cheers to our Best New Business, Dented Brick Distillery.

Westminster College1840 S 1300 E, SLC, UT 84105801-484-7651www.westminstercollege.edu

With our community’s promise that every child will have the opportunity to attend and graduate from college, we know that education takes many shapes and sizes. It is an understatement to say that Westminster is just a college. It is really a force for educating an entire community. Year after year, Westminster brings time, talent, money, volunteers and armies of curious, compassionate students to offer service to our community. They facilitate the Write Here Writing Center, Venture college course for adults and the Mentoring with Moo program. Westminster students staff mobile health clinics, work with our Arts Council on public art, and teach youth to appreciate the Jordan River ecosystem. Every year they find new ways to get involved and make a meaningful impact in South Salt Lake. We thank President Stephen R. Morgan for making this partnership thrive! Congratulations Westminster College!

Tennis and Track Company makes the most beautiful basketball, tennis and pickleball courts in the West. When it came to building a new warehouse for operations, they knew it had to look good. It wasn’t easy to make an industrial building look special, but Miles Minson, Brian Renner and Lee Renner went the extra mile to make the interior and exterior high quality, modern and classy. The office suite has wood floors, high ceilings, and a kitchen. The well lit and spacious warehouse will accommodate plans to expand at the same fast pace that makes them a success. James Parker, his four siblings and his parents, Tom and Joanne Parker, purchased and renovated the former Avalon Theatre on State Street, reviving its glory days. The latest addition is a retro soda fountain that is open before and after the performances so that patrons can enjoy a sweet treat. Congratulations Utah Children’s Theatre!

SSL Urban Livability Department - Utility Box Art220 E Morris Ave, SSL, UT 84115801-464-6712www.sslc.com

We have great public art in our city. We now have 28 art wraps on utility boxes around the city that have been coordinated and installed by the Urban Livability Department. Their staff was so excited about putting art on every corner in the city that they decided to make one themselves. Together they attended a Paint Nite® event and each painted their own version of the ‘Firefly Me to the Moon’ piece. The utility box on the SW corner of 2100 South and 300 West now displays a montage of the Urban Livability Department’s paintings. Congratulations to the Urban Livability Department!

SRIL Art - God Likewww.srilart.com

Master artist Shae Peterson’s skills teeter between graffiti artist and street artist. This past fall he completed his largest solo project, on the corner of 3300 South and 300 West. The colossal 100 foot

‘God Like’ mural is simply breathtaking. People are slowing at one of South Salt Lake’s busiest intersections to catch a glimpse of this beautiful art work.

The awe-inspiring piece, painted entirely with spray paint, reminds us of the power of art. As we work to expand public art, this mural is truly a gift to the SSL community-something Shae was inspired to paint. Thank you, Shae Peterson, for sharing your talents and making the South Salt Lake community a brighter place! We are proud to honor your amazing mural as South Salt Lake’s Best Public Art.

Oh Mai! The tiny café on State Street has people lined up out the door for their delicious food. This South Salt Lake gem serves Vietnamese favorites such as Pho, Bahn Mi and Bun that are so good, you’ll be telling your friends about it. The price is right and the people watching is fabulous – everyone goes there. The location on South State Street was their first, and now owner Phuong Tran-Nguyen has expanded to locations in Holladay and Salt Lake City. Town & Country Market2840 S Main St, SSL, UT 84115801-487-3132

Our pick for the Best Deli in South Salt Lake was an easy one. Town & Country Market is a South Salt Lake “go to” that has been open since the 1950s. Dennis and Loraine Michelson purchased the business in 1988 and have been making tasty lunches ever since. Town & Country Market has the biggest, tastiest sandwiches in the city and has a very friendly staff. They offer just about any sandwich and nearly any kind of chip. You can pick a few pieces of produce or groceries in their small market area, too. Their picnic tables look out on a quiet stretch of Main Street across the street from the SSL Police Station. Sitting there, eating a picnic lunch, it almost feels like you are back in a kinder, gentler time. Congratulations Town & Country Market, Best Deli in South Salt Lake.

Our winners for Best Dessert were just “born with it.” Francesco and Lisa Amendola make Sweetaly gelato the best, and they make it look like a piece of cake. If you want to make the best gelato, where should you start? First, be Italian. Second, learn to make it from Italian masters. Third, use only all natural ingredients – fresh milk and cream, fresh fruit, Italian chocolates and pistachios and

no added coloring. Fourth, have a few flavors that you would only find in Italy. Finally, make your store feel like you are stepping into a family-owned gelato shop in Italy. You can get a cup with a few different flavors, a gelato cake, or a very Italian lunch – a Panino Gelato – a sweet sandwich of bread and gelato. Delicioso! Congratulations Sweetaly on the Best Dessert in South Salt Lake!

Columbus Library NewsRead 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten - It seems impossible. Read 1,000 books to your child before Kindergarten! That’s too many! When do I have the time? They will never sit still for that many! It does seem like a lot of books, but it is positive and you can have a positive impact on your child’s future. KSL and the Salt Lake County Library System have gotten together to promote the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten national program.

One small step of reading a bedtime story to your child every day for five minutes is all it takes. It doesn’t matter if your child is still in the womb, 1-hour old, 1-year-old or older. The benefits are enormous. You are making memories that will last a lifetime and helping your child’s brain develop.

One book a day is 365 books a year and 1,095 books in 3 years. You will have read 1,000 books and your child will have developed a bigger, better vocabulary and learned so much from you. You can pick up a reading record at any of the Salt Lake County Libraries.

We eLearn - Does your 3-5 year-old feel left out when you are on your tablet or smart phone? We have a fun learning solution. The Columbus Library is one of four Salt Lake County Libraries lending out a new learning tablet. There are five different tablets available. Each tablet checks out for one week and has 10 apps with games like Wonder Bunny Alphabet Race and Monkey Preschool Explorers. The tablets do not have to be connected to the internet, and come in a sturdy, gorilla proof case. Come by and check them out!

South Salt Lake Spring Cleanup - Boxed, Bundled & Bagged ProgramThe snow is melting and our Public Works department is turning their attention back to spring cleanup, road repair and construction projects. They are always striving to make our community clean, safe, and beautiful.

Citywide bulky waste cleanup is held each year in the spring and fall. It is a convenient way for residents to keep their homes and yards clean and tidy. Residents may place boxed, bundled or bagged items, as well as properly prepared appliances and furniture, curbside for pickup.

Ace Recycling and Disposal, the City’s garbage and recycling contractor, will be collecting bulky waste items during the first two weeks of May. Properly prepared items must be placed on the curb by 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled collection day. The pickup schedule will be posted on your garbage can or door in advance.

To ensure easy and safe pickup, all waste items must be within easy reach of the disposal trucks. Do not park a car in front of your pile or obstruct the pile in any way. All items must be cut or broken down to a five-foot length or smaller and must not weigh more than 75 pounds.

Acceptable items include yard waste, certain appliances, and furniture.

Prohibited items include construction or demolition debris, grass clippings, household garbage, and hazardous materials – including Freon found in some older refrigerators and cooling appliances.

The South Salt Lake Public Works Department is available to assist with any questions by calling801-483-6045 or you can visit the Public Works page at sslc.com.

On March 3rd, we celebrated another new business in the City - Cole Holland College at their grand opening and ribbon cutting. We joined the Mayor, residents, colleagues and business owners for the “Best of South Salt Lake” awards luncheon and State of the City address on March 16th.

Granite High Development DebateOn February 24, 2016 South Salt Lake City Council approved, by a 4 to 3 vote, the proposal from Wasatch Properties and Garbett Homes to allow redevelopment of the Granite High property. The approved Ordinance No. 2016-02 allows a change to the future land use map from “new historical and future park” to “master plan mixed use” so the developer could continue planning for a development with homes, a large commercial parcel where Walmart has discussed locating, and green space. This approval came after months of debate and significant public input at city council and planning commission meetings. Mayor Cherie Wood issued a veto to the ordinance on March 10, 2016, outlining her objections to the proposal and process. In her veto, she stated her possible support of a mixed use project on the site, but under conditions that ensured a better outcome and process. These conditions include a full discussion with Granite School District, who has been distantly involved, stronger commitment to the open space proposal from both sides, greater detail about the retail development, and more discussion on how the legacy of Granite High will be respected in the redevelopment. A special meeting was held on March 21, 2016 where additional discussion took place. The meeting was adjourned with no motion to reconsider. Mayor Wood's Veto of Ordinance No.2016-02 stands. This issue is likely to continue to be discussed at future Council meetings, and citizen participation is welcome.
