Boulevard 88

CDL's first launch of the year, the ultra-high-end Boulevard 88, kicked off 2019 on a strong note. This joint venture (JV) project with Hong Leong Holdings Limited and Lea Investments Pte. Ltd is the only brand-new freehold residential development along Orchard Boulevard in prime District 10. Boulevard 88 achieved over S$160 million in sales within less than two weeks of exclusive private previews in March. The 154-unit Boulevard 88 has since sold a total of 73 units, including all four penthouses, achieving an average selling price (ASP) of over S$3,800 per square foot (psf).*

In June, Boulevard 88’s largest penthouse of 6,049 sq ft was sold for S$31 million (S$5,125 psf), the highest price psf achieved for a penthouse in recent years.

Designed by the world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie, who conceptualised architectural landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands and the Jewel Changi Airport, Boulevard 88 has a stunning architecture. Comprising two 28-storey residential towers, Boulevard 88 is connected at the top by a Sky Boulevard, creating a tall ‘urban window’ and a striking skyline silhouette that is visible from the city’s surroundings.

At the Sky Boulevard, residents will have abundant options for relaxation and indulgence, including the Sky Club for private social functions; the gourmet Sky Kitchen for fine dining; the Sky Lounge for drinks; the Sky Gym with state-of-the-art equipment and the spectacular Infinity Sky Pool.

Integrated with the first EDITION hotel in Singapore, Boulevard 88 has six basement car park levels with 322 lots. As Singapore progresses with its car-lite ambitions, such generous provisions for car owners will be increasingly rare in new private developments.

The ultra-high-end Boulevard 88 is the only brand new freehold residential development along Orchard Boulevard in prime District 10.

The 190-unit luxury South Beach Residences, developed by CDL and IOI Properties Group Berhad, beholds one the most mesmerising views of the sea, Marina Bay, and city skyline, by day and by night. This integrated development in the heart of the city is one of Singapore's most coveted addresses. Pictured on the cover of City News is the spectacular fireworks display during Singapore's National Day Parade, viewed from the balconies of one of these beautifully appointed apartments.

Amber Park

Located in the exclusive Amber Road enclave within the East Coast area, the 592-unit Amber Park is a luxury condominium development by CDL and JV partner Hong Realty (Private) Limited. It is just a three-minute walk to the upcoming Tanjong Katong MRT station on the Thomson-East Coast Line.

Amber Park was the best-selling freehold project launch in May 2019, with 77% of the 150 released units snapped up over its launch weekend. Since then, the project has sold a total of 171 units at an ASP of over S$2,450 psf.*

Significantly, the former Amber Park, with its distinctive teacup-shaped balconies, was also developed by CDL more than 30 years ago. Today, CDL is introducing a new icon for luxury East Coast living at the same site.

Designed by Chan Soo Khian, the award-winning principal architect of SCDA Architects, Amber Park’s most distinctive feature is The Stratosphere, a rooftop recreational deck. Sitting at 235 feet above sea level, the 32,507 square feet Stratosphere commands an unmatched panoramic view of the East Coast. It will include a 600-metre-long sky jogging track (a first for a condominium in Singapore), a yoga deck, water features, a gymnasium, a spa pool, gourmet dining, a lounge, and a landscaped garden.

Piermont Grand

As the first and likely the only Executive Condominium (EC) launch in 2019, it came as little surprise when Piermont Grand emerged as the best-selling property launch of the year. 375 units (46%) of 820 units were snapped up during its launch weekend in end July. The project achieved an ASP of S$1,080 psf. To date, a total of 388 units have been sold.*

Piermont Grand provides more than 30 facilities spread across four zones – The Cascades, The Waterfalls, The Lakes and The Hills. Key highlights include a cantilevered gymnasium alongside a 50m lap pool that overlooks My Waterway@Punggol, a children’s party room, tennis court and BBQ pavilions.

Besides strong connectivity by public transportation, the Tampines Expressway (TPE) and the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE), Piermont Grand offers convenient access to comprehensive shopping, dining and entertainment at the nearby Waterway Point, Punggol Plaza, Oasis Terraces and the future Punggol Town Hub. Several schools and tertiary institutions are also in the vicinity. Piermont Grand is also near the upcoming Punggol Digital District, which is poised to become Singapore’s Silicon Valley.

This EC project is a JV between CDL and TID Pte Ltd.

Piermont Grand is a luxury waterfront Executive Condominum overlooking My Waterway@Punggol. It is a three-minute walk to Sumang and Nibong LRT stations which are connected to the Punggol MRT station and bus interchange.

Haus on Handy

A luxury residential project in the prime Orchard Road area and the heart of town, Haus on Handy counts as its neighbours museums, malls, cafes and restaurants, art galleries, public parks, as well as numerous prestigious schools. Several office buildings, such as The Atrium@Orchard, MacDonald House, Haw Par Centre and Winsland House I & II, are also in the vicinity.

Just a three-minute walk to Plaza Singapura shopping mall and Dhoby Ghaut MRT interchange, the 188-unit Haus on Handy is home to a rare three-storey conservation heritage bungalow built in 1892. Formerly known as the Tower House, this conserved bungalow was a prominent landmark in the Mount Sophia neighbourhood. When completed, Club Haus will have features such as a gym studio, freeform studio, power studio, the Heritage Alley, and the Club Lounge.

25 of the 30 units released have since been sold at an ASP of over $2,850 psf. With the addition of new nearby commercial developments later this year, such as the redeveloped former Park Mall building, Haus on Handy offers a compelling investment opportunity with strong rental potential.

Haus on Handy’s over 30 facilities include a lap pool, spa retreat, BBQ pavilion, kids playground and kids pool. From the rooftop Sky Garden, residents will be able to enjoy beautiful views of the city while enjoying facilities such as a rooftop lounge, yoga lawn, nutmeg garden and the Sky Fitness.

Introduced in 1989, CONQUAS serves as the industry benchmark for quality and workmanship standards of construction projects in Singapore. Although it was not mandatory for private sector projects to subscribe to CONQUAS, CDL has consistently pushed for all its projects to be assessed since the system was introduced.

STAYING ON COURSE

On track in its Growth, Enhancement and Transformation strategy, CDL posted an 18.3% increase in profit to S$362 million for 1H 2019

The largest contribution to the net profit came from the unwinding of CDL’s Profit Participation Securities (PPS 2) structure, which achieved pre-tax deferred gains of S$153.9 million from the divestment of Manulife Centre and 7 & 9 Tampines Grande, and a gain of S$43.3 million from CDL’s stake in PPS 2.

Profit from two well-received luxury joint-venture (JV) projects, South Beach Residences and Boulevard 88, also contributed to the positive results.

As at 30 June 2019, the Group’s balance sheet remained robust, with cash reserves of S$3.3 billion and a net gearing ratio of 44% (without factoring any revaluation surplus from investment properties).

The Board also declared payment of a tax-exempt (one-tier) special interim dividend of 6.0 cents per ordinary share.

Heathy residential sales

In 1H 2019, CDL and its JV associates sold 505 residential (including Executive Condominiums) units in Singapore for S$1.55 billion.

In China, CDL’s wholly-owned subsidiary CDL China Limited and its JV associates sold 347 residential units in 1H 2019, achieving a total sales value of RMB 1.08 billion (approximately S$213 million).

Driving growth and recurring income

CDL has continued to execute several strategies to drive growth and recurring income. These include the takeover bid for Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc; the transformational partnership with Sincere Property Group; the investment in IREIT Global; and the acquisition of prime properties in Australia, China, Japan as well as the non-residential components of PPS 1.

Mr Sherman Kwek, Group Chief Executive Officer of CDL, said, “We have focused on executing our GET strategy of Growth, Enhancement and Transformation. By creating strong value propositions and timing our launches strategically, we have achieved healthy sales for our residential projects in Singapore. At the same time, we have further diversified overseas through transformational initiatives such as our partnership with Sincere to expand CDL’s presence in China and achieve sustainable growth there.”

“Increasing recurring income via acquisitions, asset enhancement initiatives and our fund management strategy is another priority. We will continue to grow, diversify, innovate, transform, as well as forge new alliances.”

BIZBUZZ

The Darmstadt Campus is one of IREIT Global's five freehold office properties in Germany. The campus enjoys close proximity to the Darmstadt central railway station.

New Futura, a freehold 124-unit development at Leonie Hill Road, has been fully sold, with an ASP of over S$3,500 psf. In 1H 2019, CDL and its joint-venture associates sold 505 units (including Executive Condominiums) in Singapore, achieving a total sales of S$1.55 billion.

The Berlin Campus is located in Schreiberhauer Straße in the Lichtenberg district, 6km east of Berlin city centre. Within walking distance to the Ostkreuz railway station, the campus is easily accessible by the S-Bahn (local railway) as well as regional trains and buses.

THE REIT MOVETo grow its fund management business, CDL, through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, City REIT Management Pte Ltd and City Strategic Equity Pte Ltd, made an investment in a REIT (real estate investment trust).

In April 2019, CDL completed the acquisition of a 50% stake in IREIT Global Group Pte. Ltd., the manager of Singapore-listed IREIT Global, and 78.6 million units (approximately 12.4%) of the total issued units in IREIT Global for about S$77.7 million. In June, CDL increased its stake to 12.5% of the issued units.

Listed on the Singapore Exchange since 2014, IREIT Global focuses on investing, directly or indirectly, in income-producing office, retail and industrial properties in Europe. Its current portfolio, which comprises five freehold office properties in Germany's cities of Berlin, Bonn, Darmstadt, Munich and Münster, is valued at €526.4 million (about S$816 million).

The five properties have a total Net Lettable Area (NLA) of more than 200,600 square metres (sqm) and comprises about 3,400 carpark lots. With an overall occupancy rate of 98.6%, their diversified blue-chip tenants include Allianz Handwerker Services GmbH, Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund, GMG (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom) and ST Microelectronics.

Why invest in IREIT Global?

As part of its transformation, CDL is developing its fund management business through organic growth coupled with the acquisition of assets and platforms.

Mr Frank Khoo, Group Chief Investment Officer of CDL, said, "This investment in a REIT is in line with our aim to achieve AUM of US$5 billion by 2023. Besides being earnings accretive with immediate contribution to CDL's recurring income through management fees and attractive yield, the investment in IREIT Global complements the existing CDL Hospitality Trusts and will strengthen CDL's REIT management expertise."

This deal will also enhance CDL's diversification by increasing its presence in established European economies such as Germany, which has continued to develop physical and digital infrastructure to draw in talent and capital. Germany has attracted companies looking to establish or expand their European presence, which has benefitted its economy. This has also translated to tightening cap rates, increasing rents, and decreasing vacancies across the country.

CDL has confidence in the long-term fundamentals of the established European economies and will continue to seek opportunities to acquire assets with deep value, capitalising on attractive pricing and yields in key locations.

Through asset management and enhancement expertise, CDL can add value and potentially recycle capital by injecting properties into IREIT Global.

Residents will enjoy private gardens, a sports area within the estate, leisure and retail facilities at their doorstep, and a wide range of services including concierge, parcel collection and a car sharing rental scheme.

NEXT STOP: LEEDS

CDL expanded into Leeds in the UK by acquiring a site for development into its first Private Rental Sector (PRS) project.

The largest centre outside London for financial and business services, digital, creative, publishing and broadcasting, Leeds’ history as an industrial city is closely tied to the railways that link it to other centres of British industry and commerce.

One legacy of these railway networks is the stonework viaducts that span the river Aire, which have remained icons of the landscape even though train services have moved onto more modern rail lines.

CDL is transforming one of these landmarks at Monks Bridge into an elevated public green space designed in the style of New York’s famed High Line. High Line is a public space built on a historic elevated freight rail line that has had a transformative effect on the local community.

Marking its expansion into the rapidly-growing UK Private Rented Sector (PRS), CDL has acquired a £15.4 million (approximately $27.5 million) freehold site from Alpha Real Trust. This translates to about £80 (approximately S$142) per square foot for the 193,752 square feet (sq ft) site. This is CDL's first site in Leeds.

Full planning permission has been obtained for the site which has a residential and commercial Net Lettable Area of around 386,000 sq ft and 16,000 sq ft respectively. CDL plans to develop a 664-unit build-to-rent residential project with retail space located within the site's attractive heritage arches beneath a viaduct. The project is expected to be completed in 2023.

Strategically located at Monk Bridge in Leeds, the site is about a 10-minute walk to the Leeds Train Station and two kilometres to the Leeds City Centre which comprises the financial, civic, shopping and cultural quarters.

CDL will create a vibrant and stylish estate where a public park will be developed on the viaduct, providing spaces for public functions, outdoor film screenings, pop-up restaurants and a pedestrian walkway leading to the Leeds Train Station and Leeds City Centre.

Residents will enjoy private gardens, a sports area within the estate, leisure and retail facilities at their doorstep, and a wide range of services including concierge, parcel collection and a car sharing rental scheme.

Tapping the UK Private Rented Sector's strong growth potential

Expanding into the UK PRS is in line with CDL's strategy to grow its recurring income. Due to increased labour mobility and the growing popularity of renting, CDL sees strong growth potential for this sector. Moreover, the PRS is a key part of the government's agenda to solve the UK's housing supply-demand imbalance.

Millennium Chengdu (China) replaced all water boilers in its back-of-house with computerised dispensers to prevent overflowing, dripping and leaking.

To keep water loss rate from the water supply pipe network low and within the local government's standards, Millennium Chengdu (China) has installed secondary and tertiary water meters across the hotel.

SAVE WATER, SAVE THE WORLD

Grand Copthorne Waterfront (Singapore) makes use of NEWater for its cooling towers in the hotel. NEWater, which is produced by Singapore's Public Utilities Board, is treated wastewater that has been purified using microfiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet technologies. In addition to using NEWater, its cooling tower is also equipped with features such as leak detection systems.

With more than 150 hotels around the world, Millennium Hotels and Resorts' organisation-wide measures to conserve natural resources make a significant impact on the environment.

Part of Millennium Hotels and Resorts' (MHR) Responsible Hospitality programme is its global water conservation plan. Central to the plan is to increase water recycle and reuse.

MHR is introducing alternative, more efficient methods to its chiller systems at new hotels and hotels undergoing major system and property renovations.

Water conservation strategies also include investing in water-efficient technologies, process improvements and reusing and recycling water. For example, in addition to treating water in its swimming pool, Millennium Minneapolis in the US backwashes its swimming pool every two to three days instead of daily. Backwashing is the process of thoroughly cleaning a swimming pool filter by reversing the flow of water.

Landscaping with less water

A major use of water at MHR is in maintaining its hotels’ beautiful grounds, gardens and landscapes. Many hotels have found ways to save water without affecting impacting their green spaces.

Millennium Rotorua (New Zealand) re-planted 80% of its gardens with native plants such as Ponga (a silver fern tree) and Harakeke (a type of flax plant). The plants do not require any watering during the summer months, helping to reduce water use.

Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands (New Zealand) makes use of groundwater and water collected from its greenhouse roof to irrigate the landscaping and vegetable gardens at the hotel.

MHR’S STRATEGIES FOR CONSERVING WATER1. Apply water tap restrictors, dual flushing toilet cisterns

and other simple water savings measures to taps, toilets and showerheads, and water boilers.

2. Record daily water meter readings, inspect and attend to leaks and repairs immediately.

3. Treat water in swimming pools to optimise the quality of the water and minimise pool drainage.

4. Put up signages to encourage guests to use less water in bathrooms and to reuse their towels and bed linens.

5. Harvest rainwater and recycle greywater. This can be used for plant irrigation and toilet cisterns respectively.

In New Zealand, Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands irrigates its landscaping and vegetable gardens with groundwater and water collected from its greenhouse roof.

Millennium Rotorua has re-planted 80% of the gardens with native plants that require no watering during summer. Landscaping with native plants not only significantly reduces water consumption and bills — it also has large benefits for biodiversity, reduces the need for chemical fertilisers/pesticides, and lets guests experience the local flora.

In the US, Millennium Buffalo has installed a rain monitor on its irrigation system, so that the irrigation system will not switch on in rain or freezing weather.

What is measured is saved

At the moment, 71% of MHR hotels have some form of water saving measure in place, but only 21% are measuring their water bill savings. The hotel group is retrofitting motion sensors and low flow fixtures in common areas, back-of-house areas and guestrooms.

To reduce its water footprint, MHR has focussed on areas such as kitchens, laundry areas, gardens, spas and heating and cooling systems.

Grand Copthorne Waterfront in Singapore has changed out its water fittings throughout the hotel, including guest rooms taps, to ones that meet the Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme requirements by Singapore's Public Utilities Board.

UK's Chelsea Habour Hotel's water saving measures have led to savings of at least 5% on water bills each month. It has installed new water-efficient showerheads and tap restrictors, and dual flush toilets to allow users to choose between full- or half-flush.

The human factor

MHR is actively encouraging personnel to preserve water usage throughout the business, particularly in hotels operating in water stressed regions. Regional and hotel teams are educated about water saving initiatives.

MHR’s hotel General Managers are the driving force in implementing various green initiatives and projects. One example is Millennium Sirih Jakarta in Indonesia, where guests are encouraged to help play their part to save water by opting not to have their towels changed daily.

Over the years, CDL has developed numerous green developments. Nestled within the Upper Bukit Timah and Chestnut Avenue private residential estate is Tree House, which entered the 2014 Guinness World Records for the largest vertical garden in the world.

For The Tapestry, one of CDL’s BCA Green Mark Platinum projects, various energy-efficient features are estimated to save about 3.8 million kWh annually, equivalent to more than S$760,000.

CDL secured its first green loans amounting to S$500 million, marking the first time that green loans in Singapore will be used for new property developments. This followed CDL's inaugural green bond issuance in 2017, the first by a listed Singapore real estate company.

A green loan of S$400 million, with a three-year term, is provided by DBS Bank Ltd. (DBS), which is the Advisor for this green loan.

Another green loan of S$100 million, with a two-year term, is provided by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), which is the Structuring Advisor for this green loan. This is the first multi-currency green loan secured by a Singapore company. It allows CDL to finance new green developments in Singapore and overseas.

The green loans will be used to finance eligible green development projects.

CDL's green bond in 2017 raised S$100 million which was allocated towards various initiatives to enhance energy and water efficiency at Republic Plaza, CDL's flagship Grade A office building in the heart of Singapore's Central Business District.

The rising tide of green financing

Increasingly, more companies are leveraging green financing to fund their sustainability-linked projects. According to research by BloombergNEF, green bonds issuance amounted to US$182.2 billion in 2018 and sustainability-linked loans reached US$36.4 billion that same year.

Ms Yiong Yim Ming, Group Chief Financial Officer of CDL, said, “Globally, sustainability has become mainstream in business. There is increasing interest in socially responsible investments and growing demand for relevant financial products. Green financing has grown significantly over the past few years which offers an alternative

financing stream and plays a pivotal role in channelling capital to build greener and more climate-friendly infrastructure."

"Having integrated Environmental, Social and Governance practices into our business for over two decades, green financing is a natural progression of our long-standing commitment to sustainable development and low carbon operations.”

As at December 2018, CDL accumulated a total of 100 Green Mark developments and office interiors awarded by Singapore's Building and Construction Authority (BCA), the highest tally among private sector real estate companies in Singapore. CDL is also the first and only private sector developer to receive the BCA Built Environment Leadership Platinum Star Award.

200 YEARS OF GREENING SINGAPOREFrom now till 10 November 2019, visit the CDL Green Gallery in Singapore Botanic Gardens to learn how Singapore has transformed into one of the world’s lushest cities.

Singapore’s reputation as a “Garden City” forms part of Singapore’s post-independence success story. Before the vision of a garden city was officially articulated in 1967, however, Singapore’s natural landscape was already being shaped by planners and architects in ways that continue to influence how Singapore is being developed today.

Launched by CDL and the National Parks Board (NParks) on 21 June 2019, “Singapore’s Greening Journey: 200 Years and Beyond” is an exhibition that explores the evolution of Singapore’s landscapes from 200 years ago, and how it will continue to develop into the future. The event, located at the CDL Green Gallery in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, is part of the Gardens’ 160th anniversary celebrations and the ongoing Singapore Bicentennial commemorations.

Minister for National Development and Second Minister for Finance Mr Lawrence Wong, who officially opened the exhibition, highlighted

WHAT YOU’LL SEE AT THE EXHIBITION

Mr Sherman Kwek, CDL Group Chief Executive Officer, said: “For decades, the private sector has played a significant role in supporting the Government’s focus on imbuing our city with nature and CDL is glad to have contributed to this vision. We have established a great partnership with NParks over the years to promote the importance of greening Singapore through various collaborations including the CDL Green Gallery. We hope that the exhibition launched today will enable Singaporeans and foreign visitors to learn more about Singapore’s greening journey and aspirations to be a biophilic City in a Garden.”

“Singapore’s Greening Journey: 200 Years and Beyond” is open to visitors 9am to 6pm daily (except on the last Tuesday of each month). The exhibition will open until 10 November 2019.

WEATHERING A CHANGED CLIMATEIn its Integrated Sustainability Report (ISR) 2019 "Changing the Climate: Towards Future Value 2030 Goals", CDL shares its progress towards the material Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals and targets under the CDL Future Value 2030 Sustainability Blueprint.

With the global push for a low carbon economy and climate-resilient future, the theme for CDL’s ISR 2019 highlights how the company has continued to accelerate its climate actions and encourage greater adoption of sustainability best practices among companies.

It is the middle of 2019 and the world has already seen a significant spate of extreme weather events.

Record flooding in Mid-Western US; more than 200 weather records broken in Australia last summer, including record temperatures in January (49.5°C in Port Augusta and 35.9°C in New South Wales); and over 40% of Greenland’s ice, or two billion tons of ice melted in one day in June 2019.

As local governments grapple with the impact of climate change, businesses, too, have been adapting to minimise. Besides building processes and infrastructure to deal with extreme weather, companies worldwide have also been introducing measures to reduce the environmental footprint of their business.

When the world is 1.5°C warmer

Last year, CDL completed a Climate Change Scenario Planning Study based on the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations. CDL is the first Singapore real estate company to do so.

The study was conducted to raise CDL's readiness for potential climate-related risks in Singapore and key overseas markets where it has core business operations. It considered two scenarios where global temperatures rise by 2°C and 4°C.

To align with the landmark Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report released in November 2018, CDL has expanded the study to the 1.5°C warmer scenario.

Raised carbon emission targets

CDL has raised its carbon emissions intensity reduction target across its Singapore operations to 59% by 2030 from base-year 2007.

By adopting globally-recognised best practices such as Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated targets, CDL is on track to take concrete actions to futureproof its business for sustained growth.

FUTURENOW

Developed by CDL, the zero-energy Singapore Sustainability Academy at CDL's City Square Mall is a knowledge and networking hub on sustainability. Advocacy and stakeholder engagement are ways through which CDL multiplies the impact of its sustainability efforts.

Another step in the journey

Since 1995, CDL has been "Conserving as it Constructs", working towards a greener and more sustainable future for all. In March 2019, CDL released its latest Integrated Sustainability Report (ISR) 2019. Entitled “Changing the Climate: Towards Future Value 2030 Goals”, this fully-digital report communicates CDL’s progress towards its material ESG goals and targets established under the CDL Future Value 2030 Sustainability Blueprint. Its theme is clear: climate action is urgent.

Ms Esther An, Chief Sustainability Officer of CDL, said, “CDL's early and unique ESG integration into our business and operations has brought us first-mover advantage and created tangible and long-lasting value for our brand, business operations, stakeholders, customers, investors and the community. As we continue to enhance our ESG performance, our efforts will not only unlock the opportunities in a climate-resilient economy but also future-proof our business for sustained growth.”

The report reinforces CDL's firm commitment to achieve the relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its integrated sustainability strategy towards 2030.

The full report is available at CDL’s dedicated sustainability microsite: www.cdlsustainability.com.

More than 2,000 employees, families and friends from CDL and partners joined in the second SDG City Challenge and experienced the green, healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

Staff, families and friends of CDL and its partners—the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), Health Promotion Board (HPB), and Sport Singapore (SportSG)—spent an invigorating day at the SDG City Challenge this year.

Now in its second run, the 27 July event was held at two locations, South Beach and City Square Mall. The SDG City Challenge is an extensive People, Private and Public partnership between 21 organising and supporting partners, aimed at promoting the green, healthy and sustainable lifestyle while raising awareness for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

"A sustainable lifestyle really means striking a needful balance: Being aware of how our daily activities affect our health, and how they impact the environment,” said Mr Kwek Eik Sheng, Group Chief Strategy Officer of CDL, who was leading one of the C-suite participating teams.

Participants of varying ages and fitness levels competed in an 800-metre run, a 34-storey climb up South Beach Tower, and an obstacle course. To build inclusivity, a new non-competitive ‘Fun’ category was introduced this year, which saw younger children aged seven to 12, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, crossing the finish line.

The day’s line-up also included two other events: a carnival at South Beach with 30 participating booths selling environmentally-friendly food, products and services, and an Eco Treasure Hunt for families and teams over at City Square Mall.

HANDS-ON CLIMATE ACTIONThe second Youth4Climate Fest showcased how Singapore's youths can play an active role in protecting the environment.

Over the weekend of 20 and 21 July 2019, more than two thousand youths, including their families and friends, joined the Youth4Climate Fest 2019 at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Held in conjunction with the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources’ (MEWR) Climate Action Week, and in support of Singapore’s Year Towards Zero Waste, this year’s Youth4Climate Fest was held in partnership with MEWR, the National Environment Agency, National Parks Board, ActiveSG, and other partners.

The event also celebrates the 160th anniversary of Singapore’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kicking off the event was the Youth4Climate Treasure Hunt, where participants visited historical locations in the park, played traditional games, and learned simple ways to reduce waste. This was followed by the festival highlight, the Youth4Climate Concert. Its lineup included a 150-strong combined school choir, a drama skit by Kuo Chuan Primary School, and song performances by youth musicians Uber Duber and local singer Ms Jo Tan.

Day two of the festival featured a climate action workshop led by Ms Anna Oposa, winner of the 2018 CDL E-Generation Challenge, and Ms

Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources & Ministry of Health (in green), Ms Esther An, CDL Chief Sustainability Officer (in yellow), Mr Francis Liew, Producer of the Youth4Climate Fest Concert in a wefie together with the 150 strong youth choir and crowd at Singapore Botanic Gardens Shaw Symphony Stage.

The Festival drew to a close with about 1,000 guests enjoying a movie screening of the climate-themed Disney movie Moana, with free flow of popcorn and candy floss.

A FRUITFUL 'PROPERTY CYCLE'

Senior management of CDL gave the 'property cycle' a whole new meaning at Assisi Hospice's annual Fun Day, raising S$227,175 in The CDL Challenge, a special charity segment at the event.

At the 2019 Assisi Fun Day, Assisi Hospice’s biggest fundraising event of the year, two members of the CDL senior management team, Mr Chia Ngiang Hong, Group General Manager and Mr Frank Khoo, Group Chief Investment Officer, took part in The CDL Challenge to help organiser Assisi Hospice reach its target of S$1 million.

Mr Chia and Mr Khoo each led a team of CDL and Assisi participants, taking turns to make fruit juice in special blenders powered by bicycles. The crowd joined the Guest-of-Honour Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry & Ministry of Education, Mr Chee Hong Tat, and Assisi Hospice’s Patron Ms Ho Ching, to cheer and support the teams.

Mr Chia’s team emerged as the winner even before the timer ran out, blending all the fruits allocated to his team. The CDL Challenge segment alone raised S$227,175 from CDL’s staff, business partners and visitors at the carnival.

Rising to the charity challenge

The 2019 Assisi Fun Day, which took place on 16 June 2019, attracted about 10,000 visitors. Themed Kampong Times, the mega carnival is co-organised with CDL and CBM Pte Ltd. CBM contributed manpower and expertise for areas such as logistics, cleaning and security. Contributing to the event’s lucky draw prizes were CDL Group’s hotels JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach, M Social Singapore, The St. Regis Singapore, Studio M Hotel Singapore and W Singapore — Sentosa Cove.

The CDL Group took up one of the largest pavilions to set up nine stalls at Assisi Fun Day 2019. The pavilion stalls, which sold a variety of food and drinks, included four run by CDL staff volunteers, four by Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc (M&C) hotels in Singapore (Copthorne King’s Hotel Singapore, Grand Copthorne Waterfront Singapore, M Hotel Singapore and Orchard Hotel Singapore), and one more by sister company Hong Leong Finance.

Mr Sherman Kwek, Group Chief Executive Officer of CDL, said, “In addition to the strong turnout and support of our staff, I am

ZERO WASTE COUTURE TAKES THE STAGE

Gracing the EcoBank 2019 event was Guest-of-Honour Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (centre in purple dress), with CDL Group CEO Mr Sherman Kwek (centre in blue shirt), CDL Group General Manager Mr Chia Ngiang Hong (far left), Ms Geraldine Lee, Co-Founder and Centre Manager of Arc Children's Centre (in orange shirt) with the leading ladies of the Fashion 3R Eco Fashion Show, children from Arc Children's Centre and guests.

Five leading ladies from Singapore’s environmental scene took to the catwalk in bespoke outfits upcycled from donated clothing at this year’s EcoBank Bazaar organised by CDL and Eco-Business.

Part of this year’s EcoBank launch at CDL’s City Square Mall, the EcoBank Bazaar and the Fashion 3R Eco Fashion Show were organised to raise awareness of fashion’s damaging impact on the environment, and the need for more sustainable ways of consuming clothing.

Launched in 2016, EcoBank is an annual zero waste event in support of Singapore’s vision of becoming a zero-waste nation by 2030 under the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint 2015.

Joining the event were five guests from Singapore’s environmental scene: 938NOW deejay Charlotte Mei, Actress Judee Tan, Managing Director of 100 Resilient Cities Lauren Sorkin, Founder of Green Drinks Olivia Choong, and Artist and Fashion Revolution’s Laura Francois.

The five guests, along with Guest-of-Honour Senior Minister of State for the Environment and Water Resources Dr Amy Khor, donned hand-crafted garments made from second-hand clothing donated to EcoBank.

Designed by sustainability non-profit The Fashion Pulpit, the five outfits were sold, and all proceeds from the Bazaar were donated to

Arc Children’s Centre, EcoBank’s chosen charity, to support children with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Ms Esther An, Chief Sustainability Officer of CDL, said, “At CDL, we have a long-standing sustainability commitment to our business, the community and the environment. In the Year Towards Zero Waste for Singapore, our initiatives such as EcoBank and Fashion 3R bring the People, Public and Private sectors together to break the typical ‘consume and dispose’ cycle and provide an avenue for climate action.”

The bazaar concluded two months of efforts to raise awareness and highlight the issue of waste generation in Singapore. Between 8 January and 1 February 2019, Ecobank collection points were set up at seven CDL commercial buildings across Singapore to collect pre-loved clothing, toys, books and accessories that can be reused.

More than 800 volunteers spent 3,000 hours sorting and curating the collection of about 18.5 tonnes of goods. According to partner organisation Turnkey Solutions, this initiative has resulted in savings of 9,300 tonnes of carbon emissions as a result of diverting reusable products.
