Welcome to Arnhem, the leafy and creative capital of Gelderland!
Arnhem has a wealth of green spaces. The city is home to imposing trees, atmospheric parks and magnificent country estates, all of which are open to the public. Arnhem also boasts special gardens and lovely leafy boulevards around the city centre.
Arnhem is creative. Arnhem is home to ArtEZ hogeschool voor de kunsten (art college), which offers visual arts and fashion courses, among other subjects, and so there are numerous fashion studios in the city centre and the fashion district. The varied and unique range of shops in Arnhem draws shoppers from home and abroad. In the midst of all the shops are countless cafés and restaurants in pleasant squares, little courts of almshouses and of course on the banks of the Rhine.
Arnhem breathes culture. It is the home base of companies like In-trodans and Het Gelders Orkest and it has a lovely theatre and a varied range of small(er) theatres.
Many a visitor from home and abroad pays Arnhem a visit because of its major attractions, such as Koninklijke Burgers’ Zoo and the Neder-lands Openluchtmuseum. Between them these attractions draw many millions of visitors every year.

Green spaces in Arnhem Arnhem lies in the heart of spectacular leafy sur-roundings, contained by the Veluwe on one side and the river forelands on the other.
Arnhem also has a wide range of city parks; Park Sonsbeek 1 , Park Zijpendaal and Gulden Bodem are the best-known. They share the rippling water of the St. Jansbeek and are listed as national monuments. You can play sports here, laze, picnic, meet people and go for a leisurely stroll. Historic Arnhem Arnhem has a rich and eventful past. World War II is a theme in all historical accounts of the city. The Battle for Arnhem, battled out on the banks of the Rhine in September 1944, was part of Opera-tion Market Garden. You can read more about it on page 20. Historical City Walk by Gilde Arnhem

From the VVV Tourist Information Centre you walk past Hotel Haar-huis. Don’t forget to take a look at the brand new and impressive Central Station, designed by architect Ben van Berkel. Cross the squa-re at the pedestrian traffic lights.
You are now on the other side of Nieuwe Plein, which until 1850 had a city wall with a city moat in front of it.
Turn right and continue until you reach the first street on your left (Korte Hoogstraat), which joins Korenmarkt.
Well-known for its nightlife, this square boasts a wide variety of clubs, bars and restaurants. The surrounding granaries are witnes-ses to the corn trade in this squa-re, which discontinued in 1914. On the corner of Korenmarkt and Luthersesteeg you see the Luthe-ran parish’s classicist church da-ting back to 1737. Above the en-trance is the relief of a swan, the Lutheran symbol. A warehouse between 1898 and 1951, it was then used for catering purposes.
Turn right and continue along Luthersestraat, then cross Varkens-straat. Via Tullekensteeg you will reach Rijnstraat. Turn right.
This street is the western part of the old walled city, at the end of which used to be four city gates. The Rijnpoort used to be the west entrance. Another gate (‘Velperpoort’) used to be on the right-hand side, on the site of the current Velperplein.

KORENBEURS, AROUND 1905
HISTORIC CELLARS
The front of number 71 is the front of a building which dates back to the 14th century, the former ‘St. Peters Gasthuis’. This property has three large vaulted cellars, a part of which was rented by Charles duke of Gelre in 1527 to store his wine supplies. Nowadays the building is DrieGasthuizen-Groep’s head office. It is the oldest and still existing organisation for social (geriatric) care in Arnhem.
Turn right, then left into Oude Oeverstraat.
Underneath many properties in the old city centre lie Historic Cellars
4 . For years these age-old subterranean cellars were left aban-doned. In the nineties the council acquired 39 of them in Rijnstraat and connected them with each other. The cellars have been restored to their former glory and were opened to the public in late 2001. The entrance to the cellars is situated in Oude Oeverstraat.

At the end of Oude Oeverstraat you reach a square and the Rozet building.
Since 2013 the Rozet building 10 has housed the Bibliotheek (Library), the Kunstbedrijf, the Volksuniversiteit (Adult Education Centre) and the Erfgoed Centrum (formerly known as the Historisch Museum Arnhem). The latter tells the history of Arnhem in chronological order. Admission is free of charge. The building was designed by the two architects Neutelings and Riedijk, who also designed the Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid and MAS in Antwerpen.

BAKKERSTRAAT, AROUND 1885
Opposite Rozet lies a gigantic aardvark, a work of art by Florentijn Hof-man. This aardvark is a present from Koninklijke Burgers’ Zoo to the city centre on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2013. Children can play on it to their heart’s content.
Turn back to Rijnstraat via Kortestraat, then turn right.
‘De Moriaan’, a house with a late renaissance front, is located on your right at number 41. However, the property proves to be much older and was given a new front, among other things, during a renovation in the 17th century. In the 17th and 18th century it served as a boarding house and as a home for magistrates.Looking up you can see several beautiful old fronts above the ‘modern’ shops. Built around 1900, the property on the corner of the second street

on your left (Mariënburgstraat) still has original Jugendstil decorative art with decorative, elongated figures, lovely wall clamps and a transparent architectural style with large glass surfaces.
At this crossroad turn right into Wielakkerstraat.
Here you see a number of historic buildings, including a Jewish butcher/poulterer and an old alley on your right. You now reach ‘Het Eiland’. The first thing you notice is the bronze statue of ‘Zittende Oude Man’ , made in 1977 by Arnhem sculptor Wim Kuyl after the Rheden publican ‘Jan van Lankwarden’.
The magnificent building at number 6 was purpose-built in 1920 as the ‘Nieuwe Arnhemsche Courant’ office and printer, its architecture reflec-ting the Amsterdam school style. The original purpose of this property is reflected by the vertical pen and the ink pot to the right of the large window.
Briefly bear right.
On your left-hand side you see Arke Noachstraat. Built around 1850 and allegedly the oldest coffee-house in Arnhem, ‘Het Oranje Koffiehuis’ lies on the right. The pub was renovated approximately 20 years later and rebuilt in 1926 with elements of the Arnhem school.
Walk back, then continue along Kerkstraat.
This is one of the oldest streets in Arnhem. Remains of previous settle-ments dating back to the 9th – 11th century have been found here. On your right the restored house at number 32 has a late mediaeval gate

which used to serve as an entrance to a property once located in Bakker-straat. Until the 1930s this gate served as an entrance to a city farm in this street. Restored shops with original 19th century shop fronts on either side of the street are located near properties number 12 to 15. The back of the originally late mediaeval house at number 9 was used as a Roman Catholic Home for Widows since 1750.
To your left at number 19 at the far end of the street you see the T-shaped Presikhaeffs Huys an originally 14th century house with 15th and 18th century stepped gables. The natural stone gate dates back to around 1640. The house was named after the ‘Van Presickhaafe’ mayors who lived here in the 16th century. These days it is called the ‘Trix en Reeshuis’, named after two well-known Arnhem fashion designers who own the property.
Walk to the bottom of the street, then walk around the church on the right.
You are now in Kerkplein facing Eusebiuskerk 3 , a late gothic church (POI) with a 93 metre high tower. Built between 1450 and 1540, the church was largely destroyed in September 1944. After several resto-rations the church and its tower were reopened to the public. A lift was built inside the tower, taking visitors to a height of 73 metres. Weather permitting, the tower commands a magnificent view of Arnhem and the surrounding area. In 2010 a new restoration was necessary and since then the tower has been scaffolded again, covered with printed fabric. The lift is still accessible. Unless there are activities being held, the church is open to the public free of charge.

Turn right and cross here. You are now in the Markt.
The 18th century classicist building on the corner of Turfstraat and the Markt is the former ‘Waag’ (weighhouse). These days the Markt is used as a parking area – there are weekly markets held in Kerkplein and around the church. Walk to the south of the Markt where you see ‘Het Huis der Provincie’, a monumental building dating from 1954 which exhibits a large collection of applied art. The property has recently acquired listed building status. The face has a set of bells on the right-hand side, with a work of art by sculptress Everdine Henny above. Every hour the carillon plays and turns out to open like a fence. Unless meetings and suchlike are being held, the building is open to the public. Report to the desk first.

On the right lies the mediaeval Sabels poort ), the only city gate left after the demolition of the city walls in the 19th century. After a series of restorations it was connected with ‘Het Huis der Provincie’ and as such now serves a representative purpose.
Pass under the Sabelspoort and turn left.
Now you see the Rhine in front of you. The Rhine Bridge is on your left. This is the historic ‘Bridge Too Far’ . You are now where the Allied For-ces tried to reclaim the bridge from the Germans in 1944.
The Battle for Arnhem, which was battled out on the banks of the Rhine in 1944, was part of Operation Market Garden. It was the code name for a large offensive which aimed to advance from liberated Belgium straight to the middle of the Netherlands and then turn off towards Germany. The Arnhem bridge was situated at the end of a 127 kilometre corridor, which had to be conquered from the south. The aim was to have the bridge con-quered by the 1st British Airborne Division with the help of the 1st Polish

However, the German forces proved to be too strong. Market Garden had failed, Arnhem was a ‘bridge too far’. Much of the old city cent-re was destroyed. After the battle all Arnhem residents had to leave the city on orders from the German authorities. Subsequently Arnhem was systematically looted by the German army. Arnhem had turned into a ‘ghost city’.
The war monument in the small public garden you are now facing was named after Jacob Groenewoud, a Dutch officer who took part in the battle near the bridge and was killed there. The Rijnkade is also home to the Informatiecentrum Slag om Arnhem .
Walk back to the Markt and continue in the direction of the church. Look right in the direction of the Walburgbasiliek while crossing Turf-straat/Walburgstraat.
The oldest church in Arnhem, de ‘Walburgiskerk’ , is an early gothic triple nave pseudo-basilica built between 1391 and 1423. The pentagon choir was added following a restauration in the first half of the 19th cen-tury. Through the centuries this church has had many purposes. Originally a Roman-Catholic church, it was used for several worldly ends following the Reformation in Arnhem in 1579, such as an arms depot, horse stables, a military prison and an army warehouse. In 1808 King Louis Napoleon

returned it to the Roman Catholics. Like other buildings in the area this church was severely damaged in September 1944. Its reconstruction took four years – from 1946 to 1950. In 1965 the ‘St. Walburgis’ was given the honorary title ’Basilica Minor’ by van the then Pope Paul VI.
Continue between the Eusebiuskerk (church) and the City Hall in the direction of Koningstraat.
On your right-hand side you see the ‘Duivelshuis’ . Its origins date back to the 15th century. Duke Charles of Gelre bought it in 1518. It is also known as Maarten van Rossum’s house, who owned it in the 16th century. Maarten van Rossem had the property renovated with a front designed after the latest architectural fashion. This style became later known as ‘Renaissance’. Van Rossem also had the building decorated with numerous statues. The satyrs on the front were soon considered to be devils by the Arnhem residents. This is probably how the property took the name Devil’s House. It has housed the Arnhem mayors’ study since 1830.
Made by Arnhem sculptor Gijs Jacobs van den Hof, the war memorial bet-ween the church and the city hall was revealed by Queen Juliana in 1953. Depicting a naked man sitting down called ‘Mens tegen Macht’ (‘Man

against Power’), his nudity symbolises the innocence, truth and purity tas-ting defeat when faced with the dishonesty of brutal forces of war. The original plinth ‘De Pleuranten’ was moved to Moscova cemetery a few years later.
When you reach Koningstraat, continue straight ahead until you see the monumental entrance to the Musiskwartier on the right-hand corner of Roggestraat and Beekstraat.
You are now in the Land van de Markt. Walk straight ahead into Boven-beekstraat and past ‘De Dansende Nar’ (‘The Dancing Jester’) by Hans Bayens. This statue was presented to the city by ‘De Onganse’ in 1975 on the occasion of the 22th anniversary of this carnival society.
At number 21 you see the former Historisch Museum. This property is a great example of an 18th century mansion, built in 1758 and unique in Arnhem because of the original Louis XV style (rococo), which is re-cognisable by the completely symmetrical construction, the fairly austere exterior and the lavishly decorated interior. From 1844 to 1920 the Bur-gerweeshuis (orphanage) was housed here, a name it has kept since.
Continue straight ahead along Bovenbeekstraat, then turn left into Ruiterstraat. Pass the old buildings until you reach Jansplein.
Number 37 in Ruiterstraat houses Bakkerij Van der Meijden, the last tradi-tional bakery in Arnhem city centre. The bakery is known for its ‘Arnhems grofje’ (a white raisin bun), which has been baked here for more than 100 years.

On your left you see the former post office. Completed in 1889, this neo-gothic and originally symmetrical building with strong influences from the so-called Hanseatic Gothic was designed by government archi-tect C.H. Peters. Above the left entrance glazed and terracotta reliefs have been added and above the windows squatting terracotta monkeys gave the building its nickname Monkey Cliff.
The first protestant church in Arnhem, the neo-classicist ‘dome church’ in the centre of the square was built in 1837 on the site cleared after the de-molition of the remains of the St Janskerk (church) and the Commanderij van St. Jan. The basic shape is octagonal as is the outside dome, its diame-ter is 21 metres. On top of the dome sits a 6 metre tall wooden turret, the lantern. Until 1940 the church also served as Regimentskerk van de Gele Rijders (Regimental Church of the Yellow Riders) who were quartered in the nearby Willemskazerne (barracks) until then.
Walk a little way until you reach Jansplaats. Here you see some very old houses. At number 28 with its 19th century front and lower facade you can see the remains of a mediaeval house inside. Number 29 has an 18th century Dutch gable and the cellar is believed to date back to the 15th century.
The statue of ‘Charles of Gelre’ was made in 1940 by Ab Dieckerhof and Joop Hekman. It was put here by the Karel van Gelrestichting, which gave it to the council in 1949. Cobble stones in the heart of the square outline the city pump that used to be here.
Turn right into Jansstraat.
High up at number 31 you see a gable statue known as ’de Wildeman’. Its history is unknown. De Wildeman is a mythological depiction of Hercules, symbolising strength. De Wildeman used to be the patron of the building it was attached to. Even before 1550 this property used to be a house, proba-bly an inn in Jansstraat called De Wildeman.
Continue until Willemsplein.
Across the square you see Luxor Live. The theatre is housed in a monumen-tal building built in Art Deco style by Belgian architect Diehl in 1915-1916. In its day Luxor was a very luxurious building with all the latest technology. It also used to be one of the first cinemas in the Netherlands.
