For years, conspiracy theorists have been spreading
the virtual rumour that Bielefeld is only a figment of
the imagination. In keeping with the motto, “Bielefeld?
There’s no such place!” That’s far from being true, as
you will see. Discover a successful, young, university
city with a total of seven universities and nearly 30,000
students. Take a look at Campus Bielefeld, which over
the next few years will be developed into one of the most
modern university locations in the whole of Germany.
Welcome to the heart of the East Westphalia-Lippe
region, home to a number of big names including Dr.
Oetker and Seidensticker, Alcina and JAB Anstoetz,
Dürkopp, Gildemeister and Schüco.
Some 325,000 people live here, making Bielefeld one
of the twenty biggest cities in the Federal Republic. The
city celebrates its 800th birthday in 2014. But apart
from the anniversary year, there’s lots to explore here.
Fascinating monuments to the city’s industrial past,
like the Ravensberg Spinning Mill and the Linen Works
Museum, are well worth a visit, as are Dr. Oetker World
and the art centre, Kunsthalle Bielefeld.
Go exploring – it’s worth it!

LEISURE AND SPORT
Teutoburger Wald (Teutoburg Forest)The Teutoburg Forest defines the Bielefeld cityscape.
Rising to 446 metres, this mountain range is chiefly
famous for the “Battle of Teutoburg Forest” which took
place in the year 9 AD between the Romans and the
Teutons. One of Germany’s most picturesque hiking trails,
the Hermannsweg, runs along the ridge of the Teutoburg
Forest and right through Bielefeld city centre. This attrac-
tive and varied municipal park landscape comprises a
total of 4,800 hectares of forest and 580 km of hiking trails.
Hiking and CyclingThe city itself and the Teutoburg Forest are criss-
crossed by walking trails. The 162 km Hermannsweg,
leading from Rheine to Horn-Bad Meinberg via Biele-
feld, and the 89 km Wappenweg round Bielefeld can
be walked in stages. For one-day walks there are lots
of other circular hiking paths, nature trails and scenic
routes that provide opportunities to explore Bielefeld
and its surrounding area.
Cycling is a very good way of getting around Bielefeld
and seeing the sights of the city and nearby country-
side. The Teutoburg Forest, the Ravensberg Land and
extensive green spaces like the Obersee are ideal for
one-day tours centred on Bielefeld, along circular
routes such as the BI 1 - BI 10.
The Tourist Information Centre can supply maps for
walkers and cyclists and provide detailed information.

Japanischer Garten (Japanese Garden)The Japanese Garden in the district of Gadderbaum
was opened in 2003. This garden was designed to be
looked at and is laid out as a kare san sui dry land-
scape garden. Visitors experience this garden through
their eyes – this idealised landscape is not made for
walking through. In keeping with Japanese tradition
the wooden entrance gate symbolises the gate of
Heaven and is very seldom opened. Stylistically, the
garden belongs to the early Edo period (1603-1868),
the latter years of the austere zen garden.

Bauernhaus-Museum (Museum of Rural Life)This museum of rural life not only
won a Special Commendation in
the European Museum of the Year
Award 2001, it is also Germany’s
oldest open-air museum and was
established on the Ochsenheide
hill in Bielefeld in 1917. The Mölle-
ring farmhouse dating from 1590
was brought over from Röding-

with generous voluntary, private
and public support. Also on the
site are a post mill (1686), a bake-
house (1764), a store house (1795)
and a flax mill (1826) which to-
gether paint a picture of farm life

namu – natur I mensch I umwelt(Museum of Nature, Mankind and the Environment)The concept underlying the new
Extinction or Survival exhibition
turns the conventional sequence
of natural history exhibitions
(past – present – future) on its
head. In this museum the visitor
looks at nature and the environ-
ment back through the years from
a present-day perspective. Do-

human activity and preserved in a
chilled showcase line the visitor’s
route. Fossilised contemporary
witnesses ask us to learn from the

Museum Wäschefabrik (Linen Works Museum)Tucked away in a courtyard
is a former linen works now
turned into a museum unique in
Germany. It was built in 1913 by a
Jewish businessman, Hugo Juhl, to

linen, ladies’ underwear and men’s
shirts. The 1938 political situation
prompted him to sell the firm. It was
taken over by the Winkel brothers

Deutsches Fächer Museum / Barisch Stiftung (German Fan Museum)In response to popular demand the
exhibition of Fans from Bavarian
Castles has been extended till the
end of April 2013. In view of the
numerous family ties between the
House of Wittelsbach and Thurn und
Taxis, Austria (Habsburg) and Spain,
exchanging gifts within the family
was the done thing. Fans were
particularly popular presents. King
Ludwig II liked to give fans decora-
ted with flowers, beetles and butter-
flies by the painter, Therese Weber,
as Christmas presents. These and
other craftwork objects invite you to
travel back into the glittering past of
the Kingdom of Bavaria.
A new exhibition devoted to Souve-

Bielefeld UniversityAn interdisciplinary approach, emphasis on research
and an international outlook are the hallmarks of
Bielefeld University, in fields ranging from the arts and
social sciences to natural sciences and technology.
The University has around 18,500 students enrolled
in more than 80 courses at 13 faculties. The Centre for
Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) attracts international
experts from all over the world. Founded in 1969 as a

Science. The University has established an excellent re-
putation in specific areas of research and teaching, not
only in the arts and social sciences but also in natural
sciences and technology. The excellence cluster, the
postgraduate school and postgraduate colleges that
have sprung up and the special research fields are all
visible proof of this success. The courses lead to inter-

SHOPPING IN BIELEFELD
Bielefeld is the regional shopping capital, with a big
choice of outlets making it equally popular with visitors
and locals. An attractive pedestrian precinct runs from
the main railway station to Sparrenburg Castle. The
city’s many shopping streets and arcades make this
a strollers’ and shoppers’ paradise. For refreshment
in between there are plenty of inviting street cafes,
bistros and restaurants. The big department stores and
multiples are concentrated in and around Bahnhofstra-
ße. The area round Alter Markt contains a number of
specialist shops and luxury boutiques.
