IN a city the size of Auckland, thereare tens of thousands of wonderfulhuman stories that could keepHollywood busy forever, but most ofthem stay locked in family memories.

That may have been the fate ofGloria Stanfords story were it notfor the talent and endeavour of Amyand Catherine Waller, the grand-daughters who were so taken by their

Nanas spirit that they took it to thepublic stage.

They wrote a play and called it Gloria, and Amy acted in the one-womanshow thats drawn excellent reviewswith proud Nana in the front row onopening nights.

What a tale it is, yet few outsiderswould know that the sparkling MtAlbert 89-year-old is the centralcharacter in one of our mostenduring stories.

Gloria made headlines at the end ofthe Second World War as the bride

who wouldnt leave New Zealand, six short years after she persuadedher parents to let her leave schoolafter the fourth form to learn newskills at a city commercial college.

Those qualifications led to goodjobs and then, with the war in fullswing, she joined the Army as an18-year-old. For a teenager livingin slow-paced Auckland, they wereexciting times. American forces werein town and dances at places like theMetropole and Peter Pan becamealive with the jitter-bug and friendly, romantic US servicemen.

But it was at the family home thatGloria met the man who wouldbecome her first husband. CharlesSchmidt had been invited to thehouse with a couple of friends byher hospitable parents and the pairquickly became an item.

When Gloria fell pregnant, the couple

married and Charles was soon on hisway to fight in the Pacific campaign.Wartime secrecy meant it would benearly two years before there wasany contact between them, whenCharles was back on American soiland peace finally reigned.

Of course, he wanted his wife tojoin him, and the future was fullof uncertainty when Gloria and20-month-old son Boyne the childCharles had never seen boardedthe liner Lurline, carrying Australianand Kiwi war brides to be reunitedwith their husbands.

Imagine it barely 22 and leavingfamily and friends behind, perhapsforever, to live 10,000km away in a

vast country with a man she barelyknew.

At the last minute, Gloria decided itwould be a mistake to go. She walkedoff the ship with Boyne and intonewspaper headlines. It was theworst feeling I have ever had whenmy name was called to embark, shesaid at the time. I felt my heart wasbreaking in two. Looking down on to

the wharf, I thought, There are myfriends all together, but I am all bymyself.

But a few months later, buoyed bythe news her parents and sistercould join her, she sailed with Boynewith another wave of war brides.

However, the market started to slowas the year came to an end and newlending criteria for first-home buyersbegan to bite. She believes this year will be similarto 2013 as the citys population

3/3Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go (T. S. Eliot)

PETER Brough was one of the greatcharacters of Grey Lynn and, if hewas out and about, it was pretty hardto walk past his Hakanoa St housewithout being drawn to his personality. Hed often sit on his front stepsrolling a cigarette in the sunshine, taking great pleasure in chatting toneighbours and anyone who passedthe front gate. Peter, a big man with closePonsonby Rugby Club ties, was thesort of bloke everyone loved andeveryone has missed since his deathin 2011. Now his family has decided its timeto sell the big two-storey villa at 17Hakanoa St thats been home to theBroughs since 1967. Peters parentsbought it back then, and it became hisfamily home in 1985 His three children grew up in thegrand villa and it today oozes Peterspersonality. He was a gregariousman, with endless projects andcommitments on the go, and thehouse to some extent still reflectsa life where there wasnt alwaysenough time to get everything done. Some internal renovations were neverquite completed, though they were

permitted. As Anne Duncan and seniorconsultant Jamie Morrison say, thereis still plenty of work to be done. But anew owner with the right vision (helpedby a good architect and landscaper)could turn 17 Hakanoa St into one ofGrey Lynns finest properties. It reallyis something of a a blank canvas. Five bedrooms, an office, fourbathrooms and two living areas on a650sq m section theres heaps ofspace to create a wonderful family

home in one ofthe city fringesmost in-demandsuburbs just sixor seven minutesto Queen St and ashort walk to barsand cafes.

THE future of any company dependsto some extent on the youngpeople it brings through the ranks, and two brothers are doing their bit

to contribute to the success of AnneDuncan Real Estate. Theo Thrasy, now 23 and workingwith leading consultant JamieMorrison, was always going to find hisfeet in the property business. Helpingout his real estate agent mum, he ranan open home when he was just 17,getting his sales certificate about thesame time. Brother Carlos (21) is on a similartrack. He joined the Anne Duncanproperty management team last year

after a wide grounding in real estate ata big national agency. Now both young men are at thecentre of a new organisation designedto develop skills and encourage youngpeople choosing a career in realestate. The group, Young Professionals inReal Estate (YPIRE), acknowledgesthat life is not always easy for manyyoung folk in offices dominated byolder people and has introducedawards, seminars and social events toease the way. One hundred and fifty members

attended the first awards night tonetwork and socialise with peers fromother companies. Theo, a committee member withresponsibility for the YPIRE website, says theres no age limit and youngat heart is the main guide tomembership eligibility. He calls it afantastic initiative. Often there are just one or twoyoung people in an office and somepeople can feel theyre in a vacuum. Its really nice to be able to go alongto a session or event, talk to peoplearound your own age, hear inspiring

stories and learn from experiencedspeakers, says Theo. Its encouraging to see so manyother people your age doing what youdo and also doing it well. It gives youconfidence to keep going. Carlos adds: When you bringyoung professionals together fromall over the place and they get along,so many more opportunities openup. We learn from each other, buildrelationships and can do a better jobfor our customers as a result.

    A chat with

Carlos ThrasyWhat would others say aboutyou? If I had to guess, they mightsay I care more about a good

night sleep over anything else! They could also say that once Ivegot a clear goal I become verymotivated to get it done.Virtues and vices? I greatlyrespect people who maintaintheir honesty and cannot stand itwhen someone knowingly lies tomy face.

What brightens your day?Havinga delicious lunch - and findingthe ideal tenants for a house.Theres something inherentlyrewarding about helpingsomeone find their next home.

What really annoys you?Listening while two peoplehave a nonsensical debate oversomething.

Who inspires you?Certainly mymother, who continually remindsme to further my learningwhenever the opportunity ispresented. Another is my bossDes Ryder, who sets the highestindustry standards and I strive tomatch them.

One thing youve learned aboutlife and will take to the grave? In my mere 22 years theres

one thing in particular: once youdecide on a clear goal and havethe necessary focus, there isntmuch that can stop you fromachieving it.

    Carlos, brother of sales

    consultant Theo Thrasy, was born

    FROM FRONT PAGE

Even with the support of her familyGloria never really settled in the US.They had five more children therebefore Charles agreed it was time toleave Cincinatti and live in NZ. Backdownunder they came in the early1960s, and Charles brought along hisown dad, who Gloria and her parentshad grown fond of. But it didnt work out. Charlesnever really adapted to Kiwi life and, after his dad died, took the body backhome for burial and stayed there

himself, making divorce a formality. Gloria set about fending for hersix children with the great help ofher parents. Then her life changedagain. She met Stan Stanford, aBritish seaman in Auckland for just

a week. They fell in love in that weekand, when he arrived back in Britain, responded instantly to the cabledsuggestion that he might like toreturn to NZ and spend the rest ofhis life here. Thats exactly what he did, landingin the late 60s, forging an enduringrelationship with Gloria thatintroduced a seventh child and atreasure trove of memories. They were socialists with strongconcern for others, proudly wearingactivist labels, and Gloria became a

talented poet (so much so that thethousands of words in her familyhistory were written in iambicpentameter!). But it was family they built theirlives around, from the sadness of the

loss of two children in their prime tothe joy of grand-children and greatgrand-children. Now Gloria is moving to the nextstage of her fascinating life, leavingthe Mt Albert home shes lived in fornearly 35 years (with the help of AnneDuncan senior consultant VincentBarnao) for a retirement villagesanctuary a few streets from whereshe was born. Shell miss friendly Mt Albert and isstill not sure what shell do with theplaque at the front door given to her

by a friend. But it carries a message thatreflects her life and will be justat home in her new environment:Attitude is a little thing that makes abig difference.
