The talks ended amicably and both sides remain committed to continuing to informally work together to research and develop a wellness program for fire fighters that would be consistent with the wellness-fitness initiatives developed by the International Association of Fire Fighters and International Association of Fire Chiefs. The two sides decided to conclude negotiations after realizing they would not be able to reach agreement on salary issues. The union’s request was for an immediate pay hike for the rank and file of five percent, which would have a cost to the City of $18 million. The City informed the union it is unable to provide for an immediate increase of that amount and cannot anticipate whether operational savings or future revenue growth would be available later in the coming fiscal year. “I am thankful for the professional approach the union team has taken in these talks,” said Mayor Parker. “We are always open to returning to the bargaining table should the City’s financial situation change down the road.” Contact: Janice Evans Communications Director [email protected] Office: 832.393.0800 Mobile: 713.376.0525

City, Fire Union Contract Talks ConcludeThe City of Houston and the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association mutually agreed to conclude contract negotiations today.

The unions request was for an immediate pay hike for the rank and file of five percent, which would have a cost to the City of $18 million. The City informed the union it is unable to provide for an immediate increase of that amount and cannot anticipate whether operational savings or future revenue growth would be available later in the coming fiscal year.

I am thankful for the professional approach the union team has taken in these talks, said Mayor Parker. We are always open to returning to the bargaining table should the Citys financial situation change down the road.
