Becoming One ~Under the protection of the Merciful Jesus~

A Parish merger and what it means for the City Center Parishes, Grouping 110.

As we look to the future of our parishes, it is important that we discuss openly what is happening and when, as this is new territory for all of us. None of us have experienced parish life quite like this before, and as we continue to walk and learn together, please keep in mind this process is difficult for everyone. We need to be patient with ourselves and each other. The changes that are to come may include difficult decisions that impact each one of us in different ways. Walking side by side through this transition, we will keep you updated as quickly and accurately as we can. This section of the bulletin is going to inform everyone, while embracing the fact that our 4 parishes will become one in the near future. Moving forward, let us do so in Christian charity and prayer, under the protection of our Dear and Merciful Jesus. In the City Center Parish grouping, there are 4 parishes and 5 churches. Right now, the City Center Parishes are simply a grouping with 4 separate parishes (5 churches) with all assets and liabilities separated by parish. The salaries of the priests assigned to the City Center Parish grouping and grouping staff members, who split their time and duties across all parishes, are shared among the grouping. All other staff are employed by the individual parishes and paid from that parish’s budget. For now, this is how the City Center Parish grouping will remain. The parishes are grouped together, but they are not merged together. The merger will happen very soon, as the City Center Parish grouping is on the “A” list. The merge will take place in January, 2020. During this entire process, all pastoral councils will be involved and aware of what is happening. We have pastoral council meetings scheduled for all parishes through April. Our upcoming meetings for pastoral councils are as follows: February 25 with St. Patrick-St. Stanislaus, March 4 with St. Benedict the Moor, March 11 with Epiphany, and March 18 with St. Mary of Mercy. When the actual merge takes place, all parishes in the City Center Parish grouping, will merge together to become one parish. All assets and liabilities from each separate parish will be combined into one parish and shared. The newly formed parish will have a name that defines the City Center Parish grouping. The individual parishes will retain the names of their churches, under that new parish name. For example, let’s say the new name is “Saint City Center Parish” (which it is NOT). To refer to St. Mary of Mercy church, it would look like this: Saint City Center Parish, St. Mary of Mercy Church. When we merge, the churches that remain open will retain their name and the new parish name will be added before the name of the church. There is uncertainty surrounding whether or not churches will close. There may be one or two churches that need to be closed; however, as of right now, nobody knows what will happen. In the event that we need to work through the difficult process and decision to close a church, we will do it together. The process to choose a new parish name, along with other decisions, will be communicated in this section of the bulletin. Remember, we are all working through this transition together. Let’s keep praying for each other, getting to know one another, visit our parishes for Mass on Sunday and come to parish events. Moving forward, we share this quote by St. Augustine.

“A Christian is: a mind through which Christ thinks, a heart through which Christ loves, a voice through which Christ speaks, and a hand through which Christ helps.” ~St. Augustine

As we pray for our parishes in this transition— Your City Center Parish Clergy and Staff

AMERICAN HISTORY—THIS WEEK IN BLACK

HISTORY Born on February 17, 1936,James Nathaniel Brown grew up off the southern coast of Georgia without a father who left the family when Brown was only two weeks old. After his mother left to take up a job in New York, the young child was brought up by his great-grandmother. At eight years of age, Jim Brown shifted to New York to live with his mother. Changing towns proved to be beneficial for Brown as he joined Manhasset High School and thrived on the football field from the beginning. Even though he remained actively involved in basketball, lacrosse and track, football continued to be the athlete’s strongest area. Acquiring the position of a running back, Brown averaged 14.9 yards per carry and earned himself a spot at Syracuse University. Brown eventually earned nationwide attention for his strong play and brought his career as a college player to an end with a total of six touchdowns and a rush of 197 yards. In 1957, Brown got chosen by the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League draft and adjusted well to the new environment, leading the league by rushing 942 yards and eventually capturing the honour of Rookie of the Year. In the seasons that followed, Brown only continued to progress and soon became the standard-bearer for all NFL running backs. Showcasing outstanding speed, Brown scored remarkable season totals over various seasons including 1,527 yards in 1958, 1,863 yards in 1963 and 1,544 yards in 1965. The only year which slowed down Brown’s fast moving career was 1962 during which he rushed for only 996 yards and was unsuccessful in leading the league. Shocking news awaited Brown’s fans in 1966 when he unexpectedly announced his retirement from the game after a short but victori-ous career. Leaving football behind, the 30 year old wished to switch his focus to a movie career while critics waited for him to return to the game. Proving all doubts wrong, the former

player moved on to appear in more than 30 films over the years, some of which include The Dirty Dozen, 100 Rifles and Any Given Sunday.

spiritual respite for so many people who live, work, shop, go to school and who are homeless in the Downtown area is very important to us.

The Red Door ministry is blessed with over 100 generous volunteers who serve at least on a monthly/yearly basis and 35 volunteers who commit on a weekly basis. This number includes Tom and Delia Barr, parishioners of the City Center Parishes, who joyfully volunteer

their service as team leaders every Saturday morning. How grateful we are for all of our wonderful and faithful volunteers who demonstrate their faith, hope, and love in service to those most in need! Truly this is a ministry rooted in prayer and enclosed in our Lord's Merciful Heart sharing not only food with the hungry, but also, the warmth of God's love in affirmation of each and every person's dignity who comes to the Red Door.

As always, thank you to our volunteers and to all who support the ministry through prayer, service, and donation. St. Mary of Mercy, our tender mother, pray for us!
