Overview The Citrix Independent Computing Architecture (ICA®) is designed for all client types so that the application processing is shifted from the client to the server. This architecture minimizes system maintenance since thin clients can be utilized, thus reducing the amount of processing power needed at the client. Additional gains are achieved since applications reside on servers and do not need to be maintained on client machines. Bandwidth requirements between the client and server are also reduced, enabling applications to be run on remote wireless clients as well as high speed wired clients. Citrix software is used primarily in large enterprises where application consistency and replication are major factors. It is estimated that approximately 22% of SAP clients are using Citrix MetaFrame servers. Lexmark printers provide outstanding benefits in the Citrix environment. Printer objects are easily created for access to all printer features such as duplex, hole punching, stapling and multiple input and output drawers.

The above figure illustrates the equipment and applications with which Citrix technology is often used. Enterprise applications from vendors such as SAP, Siebel and Oracle are commonly hosted in Citrix environments. These applications generally require large servers and often have huge database requirements. Couple these requirements with the many bandwidth-limited links to clients and you have the perfect scenario for Citrix technology.

Drivers Many print drivers are available for use in the Citrix environment. Lexmark provides print drivers for each printer model. Citrix has two versions of the Universal Print Driver, which may be used to minimize the number of print drivers needed on the system. Third party vendors such as Qnetix provide software to address specific needs, such as low network bandwidth. Lexmark print drivers are robust and are accepted by Citrix. Lexmark is a Premier Citrix Business Alliance™ (CBA) partner and works with Citrix to provide superior print solutions for Citrix users. Citrix does not certify drivers or have a formal program to approve print drivers. The selection of the appropriate print driver and driver settings is related to the user's Citrix server network and application environment. It is important to note that there is no one driver recommended for use with all applications and environments. It is suggested that the user include the following criteria when selecting and evaluating the driver to be installed:

• Printer features and functions needed, such as optional paper drawers and finishing options

• Sensitivity of the application environment to the print file size

• The number of different printer makes and models that are to be supported.

The user is encouraged to evaluate the driver in their environment with their applications and documents. Testing should be performed to determine the optimal driver and driver settings for each individual environment and application files. This evaluation should focus on the parameters important to the application, including: print file size, print quality and access to desired printer functions and features. It is frequently desired to minimize print file size in order to achieve faster print times and minimize the network bandwidth consumed. When comparing test results based on print file size, the following cautions should be noted:

● When measuring print file size based on the printer spool file, insure that the data type on the print spool is "raw". (This can be found in the Print Processor section; under the "Advanced" tab in the print driver properties settings menus.) ● For printers attached to a Citrix client workstation, the file size on the spool is not representative of the file size on the network due to compression in the ICA channel. For this configuration, measuring actual print time with selected test jobs may provide a better indication of performance. ● For printers attached to a Citrix client workstation, evaluate print times with the compression setting in the driver in the "off" setting and other settings such as “medium" or "high". There may be a negative interaction between the compression supplied by the driver and the compression provided by the ICA channel.

All Lexmark custom and Microsoft system drivers for printers with PCL and PostScript emulation are tested in Citrix environments. The Citrix systems supported are given in the printer listings following this section. Each time a client logs into the Citrix server a print object for each printer on the client machine is autocreated on the server. The Citrix administrator has the ability to limit the autocreation to the default

printer only. While this will not enhance print speed, it will minimize the overhead each time a client logs on. Suggested guidelines for faster printing are:

• Use the lowest acceptable graphics resolution • Print in monochrome rather than color • Set fonts to “Download as Outline” • Set “Screen Font Substitution” to “On”

These selections are found in the Properties dialogs from the Print menu. The chart below gives an overview of driver comparisons. Care must be taken to understand the parameters important to the specific application and to ensure that all desired options are exercised when choosing the best print driver for a given Citrix environment. LEXMARK CUSTOM DRIVER Lexmark provides custom PCL and PostScript drivers for all laser printer models, which support these emulations. These drivers may produce small file sizes, depending on the type of application file being printed and the driver settings. For example, setting the PostScript driver compression to “High” and the PCL driver graphics mode to “Auto,” often provide smaller print files. However, this may not always be the case, so the drivers should be evaluated with the desired application and documents to achieve optimum results. In some versions of Citrix MetaFrame server, printer features, such as N-up printing, watermarking, booklet printing and optional paper trays, may not appear in drivers autocreated on the Citrix server.

6 - A Lexmark International White Paper Lexmark Printing in Citrix Environments

Page 7: Citrix Lexmark Printing Nl

These features may be set manually in the autocreated drivers or the Lexmark Microsoft system driver may be used instead of the Lexmark custom driver. Citrix offers the capability to propagate print drivers installed on print servers to all servers in a Citrix server farm. The Lexmark custom drivers will not replicate properly with this migration tool. The Lexmark Microsoft system drivers are recommended for situations where print driver replication from the console is desired.

LEXMARK MICROSOFT SYSTEM DRIVER Customized Microsoft system drivers are available for all Lexmark printers with PCL and PostScript emulation. These drivers are digitally signed by Microsoft but may not provide as access to the full feature set of the printer. Access to all input trays and finishing options is available on these drivers, however the ability to print to fax, provide watermarks and confidential print is not available with the Microsoft system drivers. Even though the Microsoft system drivers are digitally signed by Microsoft, this does not imply that these drivers provide superior printing support in the Citrix environment. Testing in the user's environment with the applications and data being used should be done to determine the optimal driver for the situation.

MICROSOFT SIGNED DRIVERS Occasionally it is important that a driver is “signed,” or approved by the Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL). The following table lists WHQL signed drivers at the time this document was written. Windows 2000 Windows XP Windows Server 2003 System Custom System Custom System Custom Printer PCL PS PCL PS PCL PS PCL PS PCL PS PCL PS E210 NA NA NA NA NA NA E220 E312 E320 E321 E322 E323 T420 X422 T520 T520 (SBE) T522 T620 T622 T630 T632 T634 C720 C750 C752 W812 W820 C910 C912

CITRIX UNIVERSAL PRINT DRIVER I Citrix initially offered the Universal Print Driver I (UPD I) with MetaFrame XP Feature Release 1 distribution. This driver generates PCL4 code on the Citrix server, which is rendered on the client machine using the client print driver. The maximum print resolution is 300 dpi and only monochrome printing is supported. The objective of this driver is to provide fast print time and eliminate the need for a plethora of print drivers on the Citrix system. The UPD I can provide small file sizes, but may not always produce the smallest available. Testing is recommended to achieve the optimum in the target environment. Limited printer feature selection is available with this driver. The print job will print with the default printer settings for options such as duplex and input paper tray selection.

8 - A Lexmark International White Paper Lexmark Printing in Citrix Environments

Page 9: Citrix Lexmark Printing Nl

CITRIX UNIVERSAL PRINT DRIVER II The latest Universal Print Driver version, UPD II, available in the MetaFrame XP Presentation Server Feature Release 3 distribution, is a PCL5c print driver capable of 600dpi color. Similar to the UPD I, it supports limited printer features and renders the PCL file on the client machine. This driver is the default print driver for autocreated printers. Inkjet printer users may find this driver useful for color printing. This driver should be evaluated carefully when used with applications where color fidelity is critical to ensure the color mapping is acceptable.

QNETIX UNIPRINT The Qnetix UniPrint printing solution provides software that sends compressed PDF files through the Citrix ICA channel in order to eliminate the need for unique printer drivers and to minimize file sizes. The Qnetix solution may provide smaller print files and reduced print driver maintenance. This method integrates printing technologies into one cohesive printing solution that is scalable across an enterprise and may result in lower costs and increased efficiency. The UniPrint solution generates PDF files, which are rendered on the client workstation for printing on a locally attached printer. This solution replaces the unique print drivers on the Citrix server with a single UniPrint PDF driver. The UniPrint product utilizes a Server Plus module in the Citrix server to receive print jobs from the application, a separate Spool Server and a Print Server for remote printer access. UniPrint has an added advantage that the output PDF files can be archived for future retrieval, viewing, and printing. Lexmark printers capable of printing PDF files can receive and print the UniPrint files directly without rendering the files on the client workstation. When used in this manner the UniPrint Client and Print Server components are not required. The UniPrint solution provides support for inkjet printers in the Citrix environment. Color PDF files are created on the Citrix server and then rendered on the client workstation using the client inkjet driver for printing to the attached inkjet printer. As with all printing solutions for Citrix environments, the UniPrint solution should be evaluated with specific applications, documents, and printers. A careful evaluation of this solution should be made for applications where color fidelity is critical to insure the color mapping is acceptable. For more information visit www.qnetix.com.

Printing Scenarios The following printing scenarios are typical of many environments. Each scenario includes important parameters and recommended approaches. Corporate Network Full Function Printing When bandwidth is not a major concern the Lexmark Custom drivers are recommended for access to all printer features and highest print quality. The Lexmark Microsoft System drivers may also be used in this environment, albeit with slightly reduced capability as described above. Windows Certified Full Function Printing The latest Lexmark custom PCL and PostScript drivers for the T63x series, C752 and C912 printers have been digitally signed by WHQL. These drivers provide access to all printer features. All current Microsoft system drivers are digitally signed by Microsoft and provide access to most printer features. Low Bandwidth Basic Printing In situations where bandwidth is very limited, testing is recommended with all drivers listed above for maximum bandwidth utilization. While some drivers have been designed specifically for low bandwidth environments, this does not ensure they will provide the smallest files with each application and document type. Home Office Inkjet Printing Remote inkjet printing may be accomplished with the Citrix UPD II driver or third party products such as the UniPrint solution. These solutions may provide adequate capability in this environment; however, the user should evaluate the driver and printer combinations for acceptable performance and color output. Heavily Loaded Citrix Server Autocreating Printer Objects Limiting the number of printer objects autocreated each time the user logs in may slightly enhance the performance of heavily loaded servers. This may be accomplished by limiting the autocreated printers to only the default printer on the client machine. The Lexmark Microsoft system driver is a good driver to use in this scenario since it achieves a good balance between high print quality and low system resource requirements. Secure Printing In recent years, sensitivity to business security has increased dramatically. Document security over a network should be an integral part of any security plan. The Lexmark PrintCryption solution provides document encryption from the moment it leaves the host until it reaches the printer. This solution is compatible with Citrix environments.

10 - A Lexmark International White Paper Lexmark Printing in Citrix Environments

Page 11: Citrix Lexmark Printing Nl

Electronic Forms In situations where electronic forms are being utilized and network bandwidth is at a premium, printer-based forms are worth investigating. Printer-based forms utilize an electronic form stored in the printer that is matched with variable data sent from a host system, and are an excellent solution for environments where Citrix is employed. Lexmark offers the Optra Forms solution, which provides the capability to store electronic forms in a printer, configure variable data and print from a variety of system environments. The electronic forms may contain text, bar codes and graphics for crisp, high quality printed documents. The form is sent to the printer only when it is revised, which is only as often as necessary for a business process change or to change the presentation. Host data is sent directly to the printer from the application, often without changes to the existing application. Different forms may be printed at different locations – even with the same output data. Duplex and multi-page forms are easily printed for efficient, comprehensive documents. For those situations where electronic forms is not currently being used because of bandwidth concerns, printer-based forms provides the best of both worlds – low bandwidth requirements and crisp, high quality forms.

This solution allows the administrator to install Lexmark drivers on the Citrix terminal server and have them available to all users who access the terminal server through a terminal client. This configuration is valid for both Windows NT4 and Windows 2000 Terminal Server environments. It allows the printers to be attached locally to the terminal server or through a network port such as a Lexmark Network Port, LPR Port, or a Standard TCP/IP Port (Windows 2000 only). When the drivers are installed in this manner, the Citrix terminal server allows the administrator to modify and monitor printer objects through a terminal session.

solution allows the printing to be done via a separate print server, freeing up resources on the Citrix inal server for applications. The separate print server solution also isolates any printing problems that

ht occur during printing to the print server. With this environment the administrator can choose to ll the driver and allow all clients to access the print object or each user can do a Point and Print ll through their terminal session, in which case only they will have access to that print object. The

drivers, such as the Lexmark custom drivers, force RAW spooling independently from the spooler settings.

LOCAL CLIENT PRINTING CONFIGURATIONS

Local Attached Printer

Client Terminal Server

Windows NT4 Terminal Server Without Citrix MetaFrame server, Windows NT4 Terminal Server offers no true solution for clients to print to a locally connected printer while in a terminal session. In this scenario with Citrix MetaFrame server the driver should be installed on the client and Point and Print installed through the terminal session. The driver will be installed on the client machine and act as a print server, but only this user will have access to the print object. Windows 2000 or 2003 Terminal Server Windows 2000 Terminal Server allows print objects to be autocreated in the terminal session for printers installed locally on the client. For example, if a user running a Windows 2000 client has a Lexmark E323 installed to LPT1, a print object will get created for the printer inside the client terminal session and a print object on the terminal server when it is first made. This allows the user to print back to the local printer. The driver must be available on the terminal server for this feature to work. Citrix MetaFrame Environment Citrix MetaFrame environments offer very similar features as that of Windows 2000. It also supports the auto configuration of local printers in a Windows NT4 Terminal Server environment. A user can print back to a locally attached printer while using a Windows 9x, Millennium, NT4, or 2000 client. This feature functions for both system and Lexmark custom print drivers. The following table lists the various driver, server and printer location options. Driver Location Driver Type Printer Location Terminal Server Windows System

Citrix Client with Windows OS

SAP R/3 Server

Citrix Terminal Server

Lexmark printers have successfully been used in the Citrix environment for local client printing from SAP R/3 servers as shown in the above configuration. The Citrix MetaFrame XP terminal server has the SAP R/3 client GUI installed on it as well as the SAP LPD software. This SAP client program is made available for use by Citrix clients. A Citrix client using a Windows operating system is then attached to the Citrix terminal server. A default printer is defined on the Citrix client, using either a Windows system or Lexmark custom driver. When an SAP "front-end" printer is requested from the Citrix client, a printer object is generated on the Citrix terminal server, which passes the print job from the SAP R/3 server to the Citrix client, and to the printer. Printing should work to an "L" connected printer (at the SAP server) as well.
