Recreation, Customer and Community Services

Information Bulletin February 2013

The program saw the introduction of free, "Try a Sport Tuesday " sessions, intended to give children a taste of sports that they may not have previously had the opportunity to participate in. The program also featured an activity for 13 to 16 year olds for the first time. The 3-day high performance basketball session was a success with 15 children undertaking the activity.

The program will continue to change and evolve through 2013 as we endeavour to tailor the program to better meet the community's needs.

Summer Holiday Program - Waverley Pavilion

The Margaret Whitlam Recreation Centre ran another very successful program of sporting activities for children as part of Waverley Council's Summer School Holiday Program in January. The program contained activities catering for children from 3 up to 16 years of age. All the activities were run in the indoor sports court which provided shelter from the sun and welcome relief from the heat of the Sydney summer.

The program attracted over 650 children over three weeks. A range of sports were on offer including netball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, table tennis, cricket, Oztag, T Ball and indoor hockey. There was also multi-sport, early developmental sessions for 3 to 5 year olds. Specialised coaches were used for each session to provide the best quality tuition.

Artist in Residence Program Artists in Residence Maria Buchner, Aileen Huynh and Lucas Davidson have moved into their studios in the Bondi-Waverley School of Arts building. During the six month residency, artists will have opportunities to work with the community. The artist in residence program enhances local cultural opportunities to experience contemporary art.

Maria Buchner Aileen Huynh Lucas Davidson Each artist is asked to deliver a community arts benefit: Maria Buchner’s community benefit project raises local awareness and respect for the Aboriginal rock carvings at the North Bondi Golf course. The acknowledgement of Aboriginal links to the land can provide a connection for non-Indigenous communities to share the respect for the coastal environment which Waverley residents enjoy. Aileen Huynh is a video artist wanting to capture the Bondi Groove. She is looking for people who move - on our beaches, in our parks and on our streets. If Councillors wish to refer on any beach boppers, synchronised swimmers, or people who practise yoga or any martial arts in open spaces, please contact Aileen directly on 0423 233 866. Lucas Davidson wishes to curate our very own Video Art festival in Waverley while completing his Masters of Studio Art at the Sydney College of Art.

Bondi Boheme Public A rt in the Private Domain Council approved the Toga Group’s Art Plan for the Bondi Boheme development on 61-79 Hall Street Bondi in June 2012. The Toga Group have committed $290K to public art through Council’s Public Art in the Private Domain Guidelines. This is the largest and most significant private contribution to public art since the guidelines were launched in 2010. The commissions are tiered, with Stage 1 commissioning $200K for permanent artworks on the exterior walls, through site link to O’Brien Street, canopy garden and hotel lobby. The expressions of interest for artists was advertised in artshub, art monthly, and art almanac during August and at the Melbourne Art Fair. Further promotions to local artists were through the emails/social networks of Council’s Cultural Development Officer and Visual Arts Projects Officer. The Boheme public art website attracted 1000 hits. On 19 September 2012, Toga shortlisted 13 proposals to be further developed for public exhibition of concept designs. Local artists shortlisted include Jonathan Jones, Anne Zahalka/Sue Saxon/Jane Becker, Gillie and Marc, Dion Horstman, and Bondi resident of many years, Chris Fox. Councillors are encouraged to view the concept designs and marquettes at the Customer Service Centre, 55 Spring Street, Bondi Junction until 15 February 2013 and take the opportunity to comment. Only four proposals will be recommended for commissioning for the four spaces identified. The public comments will be reported to the Public Art Committee and Council. The Toga Group aim to contract the Tier 1 artists in March 2012.

B ondi P avilion Gallery LIMINAL 11 - 30 December This first time collaboration between six women artists was curated by Nadege Lamy. The exhibition featured an impressive body of work including photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, book art and mixed media.

Their work is inspired by the changing colours, textures and moods of the coastal and bushland environments in which they live. They also explore intimate moments in human existence and find beauty in unexpected places. They encourage the viewer to stand at another threshold of experience – to stand off centre, betwixt and between – a liminal experience.

The artists : Helen Young, Raewyn Proctor, Chris Miller, Gillian Hand, Angie Gleeson and Kay Bazley.

Bondi Beach Annual OCEAN PACIFIKA FESTIVAL Sunday 25 November 2012

To celebrate the 2012 Ocean Care Day, the Bondi Pavilion presented the Ocean Pacifika Festival down at Sydney’s most popular summer destination - Bondi Beach. There was something for everyone to enjoy at this free festival including a full entertainment program of Pacific Island dance and music, children’s craft workshops, arts and crafts stalls and a host of information and environment stalls helping the community learn about our beautiful oceans and how to make sure they stay that way!

Venus, the giant inflatable whale, made her regular appearance - she got personal with local ocean creatures (with one of the Marine Discovery Centre’s ‘touch tanks’), and made some ocean and recyclable art at our free craft workshops. Beach goers browsed the many Pacific Island arts and crafts stalls, and learnt all about the environment and our local ocean through the many information stalls that lined the Bondi Pavilion forecourt on the day.

Junction House Band Play Luna Park The Junction House Band is a group of musicians with intellectual disabilities who have been rehearsing in the Bondi Pavilion music studios for over twenty years supported by Waverley Council. The band, led by musical director Lindy Morrison, have recorded three albums of their original material, written three musicals and perform across the east coast of Australia at community events.

This year they were fortunate to have the chance to work with Jim Moginie, former guitarist from Midnight Oil, due to support from Arts NSW. Jim facilitated the writing of two new songs with the band. These songs, called 'When I open my mouth to speak' and 'Don’t lock me away' were performed for the first time at the House With No Steps dinner at Luna Park on 9 November as part of the celebrations for International Day of Disability. These songs are now being recorded at the Bondi Pavilion recording studios through the Bondi Community Cultural Centre music programme.

Flickerfest 11 – 20 January 2013 Flickerfest began as a small local festival at the Balmain High School in 1991. Over the last 22 years it has grown to become Australia's only Academy® accredited & BAFTA recognised competitive International Short Film Festival with entries coming from filmmakers across the globe. Flickerfest is considered in international circles as the leading Australian competitive short film festival and increasingly filmmakers view it as one of the main festivals on the world circuit. To maintain this high standard each year the festival director visits festivals around the world seeking new films, most of which have not been seen in Australia. This year's Flickerfest season was one of the most successful to date. The Flickerfest program ran over the course of nine days and brought vibrancy and energy in to the Bondi Pavilion building.
