Elsevier Emergency Resource Centres

In times of global crises, disease and natural disasters Elsevier develops timely, dedicated resource centres which provide free access to medical research, online tools and expert advice on emergency themes. The resource centres are developed for healthcare professionals, librarians, researchers and members of the public. Latest Elsevier emergency resource centres, include: www.elsevier.com/ebola-resource-center www.elsevier.com/zika-virus-resource-center

US National Library of Medicine (NLM) - Emergency Access Initiative (EAI)

EAI is a partnership between the NLM and participating publishers to provide temporary free access to full text articles to healthcare professionals, librarians and members of the public affected by disasters. Elsevier has been a partner since EAI was first developed, providing free access to medical research during the earthquake and subsequent cholera epidemic in Haiti (2010), flooding in Pakistan (2010), both the Fukushima earthquake and tsunami in Japan (2011), Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines (2013) and the Ebola crisis (2014). www.nlm.nih.gov

Media Access

Elsevier helps journalists investigate and report on the complex world of science by providing credentialed media with free access to a range of tools. With access to trusted and quality research and information, reporters can more accurately inform and educate the public about science in the broadest sense. Free media access is provided to key Elsevier databases and analytical tools including: ScienceDirect, Scopus, ClinicalKey and SciVal. www.elsevier.com/newsroom

STM Digest

Through STM Digest Elsevier offers summaries of socially-impactful research papers in an easy to comprehend format. These “lay abstracts” make research accessible to more people by lowering the barriers presented by specialist terminology, something which can prevent non-professionals from reading research articles. These summaries can be accessed and read by everyone for free and are presented with a link to the full-text article on ScienceDirect. www.elsevier.com/about-stm-digest

Atlas

Atlas is an online platform and award programme that recognises world-changing research published in Elsevier journals and makes it accessible to citizens. Articles covering the themes of people, planet, resources or technology are picked by an independent, international group of experts and made freely available on ScienceDirect. The author can also work with a science journalist who will rewrite the scientific article into one that is more accessible to the general public. This article will then be published on the Atlas platform.www.elsevier.com/atlas

AudioSlides

Elsevier journals offer authors the option to present their published research in a free webcast-style, audio presentation. With an easy template and tool, authors can in their own words record and upload their explanation of the research, giving them a way to promote their work to a wider audience. AudioSlides are published online next to the published article on ScienceDirect and are open for all users; recorded presentations can also be uploaded to YouTube or embedded on other websites. www.elsevier.com/audioslides

Science & People

This is an event series aimed at facilitating the exchange of information between researchers, experts and the interested public; reaching out to those who might otherwise not be in regular contact with science, and creating a hub where people can actively engage with socially-relevant research topics. The events are always organised in collaboration with local research institutes and non-profit partners.www.elsevier.com/science-and-people

Share Links

Upon publishing their article in an Elsevier journal, authors receive a customised ‘Share Link’ to their article on ScienceDirect, which they can then share with anyone through any communication channel, including social media. Clicking on this link provides 50 days free access to their article.www.elsevier.com/share-link

Research4Life

Through a network of UN agencies, universities and publishers, Research4Life provides research for free or at low cost, to academic institutions, hospitals, government and nonprofit organisations in developing countries. Its goal is to foster evidence-based healthcare and policy making as well as a strong, independent research culture and integrate science from low resource countries into the global research arena. As a founding partner, Elsevier contributes more than a quarter of the nearly 70,000 peer reviewed, online resources made available through Research4Life, which resulted in over 5 million article downloads last year.www.research4life.org

Accessible Books Consortium (ABC)

ABC aims to increase the number of books worldwide in accessible formats (braille, audio and large print) and make them available to people who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise print disabled. It is an inclusive partnership organisation led by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and involving advocacy organisations, authors, libraries and publishers, including Elsevier.www.accessiblebooksconsortium.org

Bookshare

Elsevier has made a collection of its top book titles available in accessible format on Bookshare.org, the world’s largest online library for people with print disabilities.www.bookshare.org

Pint of Science

Pint of Science is a global initiative that aims to shed light on science in a fun, engaging and approachable way. It takes it out of the labs and libraries and brings it to pubs and bars. It offers established, early-career and non-professional researchers a podium to exchange information with colleagues as well as the public; they receive feedback from a diverse audience, hear perspectives from non-specialists and garner attention for their work outside the lab. Elsevier has been an active partner, sponsor and promoter of the Pint of Science festival supporting events in the UK, Germany, Brazil and the United States.www.pintofscience.com

Load2Learn

Blind and dyslexic students can access research published in Elsevier titles in accessible format by working with Load2Learn, a web-based service delivered by RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People UK).www.load2learn.org

Sense About Science

An independent campaigning charity that challenges the misrepresentation of science and evidence in public life. They advocate openness and honesty about research findings, and work to ensure the public interest in sound science and evidence is recognised in public discussion and policy making. Since 2006 Elsevier has partnered with Sense about Science on a unique programme of events and publications to increase the understanding of peer review among journalists, policymakers and the public as well as to engage and inspire early career researchers to stand up for science in public debates around the world.www.senseaboutscience.org

White City Maker Challenge Programme, Imperial College London

Imperial College London has created a programme to support more than 100 young people from disadvantaged urban communities around London to become the next generation of “makers” and entrepreneurs. The Maker Challenge Programme enables children between ages 14-18 to engage with science, engineering and design topics. Activities and workshops will be held in a dedicated maker space at Imperial’s White City Campus, with support and expertise from staff and students of the world’s top 10 universities. The Elsevier Foundation is a key contributer to the programme through its three-year grant.www.imperial.ac.uk

REISearch

Launched at the beginning of 2014, REISearch is a European Commission co-funded project aimed to create an online arena for responsible and informed multi-stakeholder debate. The initiative’s ambition is to better understand the evidence, the constraints and the opinions of citizens across Europe on key societal issues by bridging communication gaps between science, society, media and policymakers; Elsevier is an active supporter of the initiative.www.reisearch.eu

The Science Media Centre

As an independent charity, the SMC believes that scientists can have a huge impact on the way the media cover scientific issues, by engaging more quickly and more effectively with the stories that are influencing public debate and attitudes to science. Their goal is to provide, for the benefit of the public and policymakers, accurate and evidence- based information about science and engineering through the media, particularly on controversial and headline news stories when most confusion and misinformation occurs. Elsevier has been a proud supporter of the SMC since 2006.www.sciencemediacentre.org

VALERIE Research Project, Wageningen University - the Netherlands

There is a compelling need for research to play a significant role to help tackle the global challenge of increased demand for food. Many EU and nationally funded projects in the fields of agriculture and forestry provide excellent results, yet translation of these results into farming practices is limited. Driven by Wageningen University, the aim of the Valerie Research Project is to boost innovation by integrating empirical knowledge into field practice- i.e. bringing science to farmers in the Netherlands. Elsevier is a proud contributor to the project, providing support with database development, and through free access to key journals within agriculture and forestry disciplines. This content will feed directly into the “ask-Valerie.eu” – the search engine that will serve as a knowledge portal for farmers.www.valerie.eu
