• The status of being a citizen

• Membership in a community (a college or High School)

• The quality of an individual’s response to membership in a community

• Value, respect, and defend basic human rights

• Respect and uphold the law and its agencies

• Core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment help build good citizenship and are good values to live by no matter where you find yourself.

Behaviors that distract from the Core Values Include

• Hazing

• Discrimination

• Sexual harassment.

Hazing is any conduct that causes another person to suffer or be exposed to and activity that is:

• Cruel

• Abusive

• Humiliating

• Oppressive

• Demeaning

• Harmful

Hazing is usually associated with college fraternities, but it can take place in any kind of organization.

• High School teams and clubs

• Military Service

• Civilian workplace

Hazing at the High School levelis particularly damaging!

• Students are vulnerable to peer pressure due to a heightened need for:

• Friendship• Approval• And acceptance by your peers

Discrimination

• Any act the denies equal treatment to individuals because of their:

• Race• Gender• Ethnicity• Religion• Or other differences. (Example: Single Parent)

Sexual HarassmentIs a particular form of gender discrimination.

Involves..• Un-wanted sexual advances

• Sexual favors

• Verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature

• Creating an atmosphere of fear and distrust

Examples of Sexual Harassment

• Hanging a suggestive photo at work, is a form of sexual harassment.

• Deliberate in-appropriate body contact with someone, is a form of sexual harassment.

Hazing, Discrimination and Sexual Harassment violate core values

• Honor: By refraining from participation in these behaviors students maintain their Integrity and conduct themselves ethically.

• Courage: Despite peer pressure, students must have the courage to refrain from engaging in undesirable actives.

• Commitment: Students must be committed to showing respect for other people

Relationship Between Team-work & Behavior According to core Values

• Sometimes you can be on automatic and not realize you are operating in a moral or ethical gray area

• The core values can help you navigate gray areas.

• Have the courage to examine whether your own behavior is honorable.

• If not, commit to changing it.

• Keep it confrontational.

• Be professional and utilize tact.
