Dear Readers,

It is often said, and I for one seem to say it a lot, ‘there just isn’t enough hours in a day’.

Ecclesiastes chapter 3 tells us that there is a time for everything and if we break down the hours in a week we all have 168 hours.

In a survey carried out it was said that as Christians we spend on average 48 hours sleeping and 10 hours on church activities which leaves 110 hours for other things. Now I know that some of you reading this will say that you spend more than 10 hours at the corps but it is true that the majority of our life is spent away from the church. The important consideration I think is not how much time I spend ‘doing’ as much as ‘being’.

The late General Albert Orsborn says in song 522 ‘all my work is for the Master, He is all my hearts desire;’ As professing followers of Jesus we have each been called to ‘go and make disciples’ (Matthew 28:19) It is so easy to compartmentalise and think that that is solely done through our service in the activities of the church. However, as the majority of our time is spent doing other things then it is important that we support each other in prayer specifically for the purpose of asking God to empower each of us in our everyday lives.

If we each commit our lives to God in the attitude of our Founder William Booth when he said ‘God shall have all there is of William Booth’ then I believe that the Holy Spirit will empower us to be God’s man/woman wherever we find ourselves. HOW WILL YOU SPEND THE MAJORITY OF YOUR HOURS?

Major Mary

Letters

Lighthouse Community Centre

Thankyou from Songster Jean Wright’s daughter, who used to be one of our juniors:

To everyone who has prayed for me,I’d like to say thankyou to everyone who has prayed for me over

time. I really appreciate all the concern for me and I am doing better. So thank you all again. Cindy x

Dear Cradle Roll Members, you are invited to come to an informal gathering of all Cradle

Roll members on Thursday 6th June at 10:30am for probably an hour or so.

This is intended to be simply a means for all parents of children on the Cradle Roll to come and meet each other. The only agenda is for us to simply share a Bible reading, a prayer, drink coffee, eat biscuits and chat; toys will be available for the children.

Please come and perhaps bring some ideas as to how you think this group could develop? Should you need it, my contact number is 9232 6207.

Hope to see you there, with love, Marilyn

As the Summer season approaches, volunteers will be needed in the café and shop to cover for holidays. Any help you can give

will be greatly appreciated - please indicate what you can do to Melvyn, Major Mary, or Sue.

Prayer BoardPrayer DiaryPlease take a copy so that we can support each other in prayer.

Prayer BreakfastsWe enjoy half an hour of prayer (you don’t have to pray out loud), followed by tea and toast...

.... so why notcome along to the Citadel 8am on Sat:June 8thJuly 6th

Whatever you do, work heartily,

as for the Lord and not for men,

knowing that from the Lord you will

receive the inheritance as your reward.

You are serving the Lord Christ. (Col 3:23-24)

Christ never compels or coerces our service.

Rather, His spontaneous, willing care for us

evokes authentic, willing service -

in us and from us.

Please remember to pray for our leaders, those in poor

health or on our ‘continued prayer’ list on page 6.

Let’s pray for...

The USA Western Territory Staff Songsters (Neil Smith) - that their ministry at Southsea, and throughout their UK Tour, will captivate, challenge, encourage and bless; a time of God-centered music-making!

Our young folk, as part of the Divisional Youth Band, as they participate in the Gospel Arts Concert (June 8th) at The Royal Albert Hall.

Our Summer Season on the Seafront (commencing June 16th) - that our witness and worship will be meaningful and also instrumental in bringing a glimpse of Jesus to those who linger or pass by.

Our friends at Portsmouth Citadel as they celebrate 140 years (June 29th) - that their wonderful heritage will be a launchpad for even greater things in the future.

For Margaret and Amanda as they endeavour to ensure that Jesus is right in the centre of all the activity and conversation at our new ‘Noah’s Ark Nursery’.

The review of our Community Programme - that it will prove effective in its endeavours to provide for the needs of the area we serve.

Sunday December 1st

Yes, it’s just 6 months away!! However, if you want to be sure of securing the seat of your choice, it would be advisable to book

as soon as possible with Yvonne (023 9273 8349).

Obviously, we shall be ‘tweaking’ the programme here and there in an endeavour to keep things fresh for performer and listener alike, but the ingredients remain essentially unchanged viz St John’s College Junior School Choir, Portsmouth High School Nursery along with Dr Russell Rook as compere... our charity will be Naomi House, in their work with children who have cancer.... but, for all that’s the same, we are hoping and believing for a first appearance from the children of ‘Noah’s Ark Nursery’.

Please pray about this so that the ideas and plans may come to fruition successfully.

Seafront Season

Carols At The Kings

We commence on Sunday June 16th - 4:45-5:15pm

Let’s pray and believe for a time of meaningful worship and witness. We would love to have you sharing with us and making the best of this opportunity for evangelism.

Please don’t leave it to someone else, it’s our collective responsibility to proclaim the Name of Jesus!!

This Time Tomorrow

Life happens! And, as Christians, every part of our life counts. So we want

to introduce to you all TTT. It’s a simple thing to do but it brings a range of benefits that will enhance our worship, our prayer and our fellowship.

Here’s how it works: During a Sunday meeting the leader will ask one of our congregation just three or four questions about what they will be doing THIS TIME TOMORROW, the challenges and the joys and how we can pray for them.

What each one of us does during the week is important and we want to celebrate this and also encourage each one of you in your daily living, that who God has made you to be and what you do is valuable to Him and to our fellowship. The things we share with each other, and the prayers we pray will bless us all richly. So get ready...TTT is here! LS

Mombasa

We have received word that the Kenya Trust have sent 40+ instruments to replace those lost during the riot at Mombasa

Corps. These arrived safely in Nairobi where they were checked, cleaned and repaired if needed by the Instrument Repair busi-ness set up by the Kenya Trust. The first batch of 25 were delivered to Mombasa at Easter and the rest will follow soon, together with some replacement items for the Home League.

It is wonderful that the Band will now be able to function so soon and that the Trust has secured the donated instruments for them and have been able to cover the shipping costs. I must confess it seemed an almost impossible dream when I visited in October.Joyce Dixon (Major)

Together in Christ

Southsea Citadel has been privileged and blessed to welcome several Burmese families into the fellowship in recent years.

Having enjoyed and embraced the ‘Salvation Army style’ of worship that they found as they joined us, this Sunday (May 12th) they gave the rest of the congregation a chance to experience worship in Burmese style.

The group sang ‘United in Christ’ in their own language. The song, which is about living the way Christ expects, was offered in heartfelt worship, evoking a warm and joyful response.

The group is pictured above in the traditional dress of the Karen Tribe.

From the Desk of theDivisional Bandmaster

I want to share with you part of a Times Opinion column that was used by a member of Trowbridge Band recently during devotions at the end

of band practice. Towards the end of the article, the writer quotes from Philip Yancey’s book What’s So Amazing About Grace?

Yancey tells of a young girl who had become bored of suburban life in Michigan. After an argument with her dad, she heads for Detroit and excitement and falls in with a man who provides her with drugs that make her feel happier than she’s ever felt before. He puts her up in a luxury apartment and, in return, she performs sexual tricks for men. It goes wonderfully for a while until she falls ill.

Suddenly she is friendless, on the streets and living worse than her dog back home. She phones her parents for the first time in two years. She only gets the an-swer machine, but leaves a message, explaining that she’s getting on a coach and what time she’ll be arriving at the local bus station. She says that she’s sorry and will understand if they never want to see her again. If they’re not at the station she’ll stay on the bus and travel on. She imagines many scenarios on the journey home but none prepares her for the scene that greets her. Rather than an angry, unforgiving father standing with an I-told-you-so face, her whole extended family are there waiting. Forty aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins, grandparents - all with balloons and ‘Welcome Home’ banners.

If human hearts are often tender,And human minds can pity know,If human love is touched with splendour,And human hands compassion show,

Then how much more shall God our FatherIn love forgive, in love forgive! Then how much more shall God our FatherOur wants supply and none deny!John Gowans

Note the exclamation marks in the refrain, not question marks. Amazing Grace!

Stephen Smith, Divisional Bandmaster

Band Weekend, May 18th-19th

A well supported Festival of Celebration commenced Southsea Citadel Band’s 130th Anniversary weekend with ‘Intrada on Regent Square’.

The Band’s other contributions were ‘Sacrifice – I bring Thee All’, ‘Proces-sion to Covenant’, ‘God so Loved the World’ and the march ‘The Fount’. Trombone Soloist Andrew Newell’s (Bristol Easton) contributions included ‘His Provision’ and ‘Count Your Blessings’. Euphonium Soloist Stephen Kane’s (Bristol Easton) items included ‘Song of the Brother’ and,‘Travelling Along’ (by Chris Mallett). A duet concluded their items with a moving and delightfully played ‘Donegal Bay’.

Piano accompaniment was by Marc Harry (Southampton Shirley). The Southsea Singing Company supported with five new songs which were presented faultlessly and very well received.

Sunday morning worship, which centred on Pentecost, was led by Band Sergeant Russell Morrison who received his commission during the meet-ing from Major Mary Wolfe (CO). Also included were Individual contribu-tions by Band members. The Band played ‘Time To Be Holy’, and ‘Glorify Thy Name’. The Songsters supported with ‘Church on Fire’.

Sunday Night Live commenced with the congregational song ‘Storm the Forts’ and Band contributions included the march ‘The Ambassadors’, Movement ‘The Lamb’, Caprice ‘Tribute to Youth’ and the song by Band voices ‘Peace perfect Peace’. Darren Shaw gave the Bible reading and message. The Y.P. Band with it’s two newest members Ben (8) and Hayden (8) playing out for the first time, presented ‘Marching Saints’, ‘Wonderful Lord’ and ‘Soon and Very Soon’. The Songsters supported with ‘Master, We Are Here’. For the final two items of the weekend, the Senior Band was joined by a number of former members in playing the Selection ‘In Wonder Beholding’ and the march ‘Rosehill’. The weather has been so changeable since the beginning of this year that

we must have often thought and said, ‘Oh no, not that flaming weather again!’ June is referred to as ‘Flaming June’ - not in the same context, but because it is deemed to be one of the hottest Summer months.

The daffodils are gone.

Down at our recreation ground, the cricket pitch has been marked out by a white boundary line.

These two things always call my attention at this time of the year. The brevity of the spring flowers, and the marked out boundary limit of a game of cricket.

Jesus once called the attention of His disciples to the flowers on the hillside around them. How they bloom and die out throughout each year. So beautiful and yet so frail and transient.

I think it is so important to be reminded of this whatever our age.My aches and pains and frailty however, make me rejoice in why the Lord said it - to underline the direction of life lived in response to His gospel, producing faith in the eternal and everlasting living God.

Finally, the life we live needs its boundaries. As I write, Parliament votes on the boundaries of marriage, to be bound by God’s instruction of man with woman only, or make it apply to relationships beyond that boundary.

I fear the worst. I thank Him that His word and will are changeless. The only way for man to live is within His boundaries.K.G.
